Campus Maps -- expensive and in short supply...

Kay Ellen reports that we are almost out of the color campus maps from Parking and Transportation Services (the ones that have one of the campuses on one side and "metro access routes" simple map on the other, and that highlight parking facilities). These maps cost five cents each, and we don't want to pay for more. They are available online (though of course we don't have a color printer, and if we did it would cost us more than that to print each page anyway). Suggested we print from online site as needed. The relevant page is at

Wireless access for visitors

in the same issue of the TechBrief that Janet referred to in a note about Aleph being down on Sat. May 20, there's an article about the new access to campus wireless for unaffiliated users:

The U's page on Wireless access includes new information about short term wireless access for visitors who need access for a few hours.

According to Pete O. it's about $5./day. The URL: Http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/info/wireless.html
There is a reference to this page as a link within the text at www.umn.edu/wireless

If you are not currently a member of the University community but need temporary access to our network, you can go here* for information and scroll down to Self-Sponsored Wireless account. Here's the pertinent info:

SELF-SPONSORED WIRELESS ACCOUNT
Individuals with no affiliation to the University, may purchase access to the University's wireless network using a credit card. A unique ID and password will be assigned to the user for the remainder of the day with the option of adding up to five additional days of access. Access expires at 2 a.m. of the day specified by the user.

To sign up for this access, the user follows a link on the University's wireless sign-in page.
------------------------------------------------
These accounts are for access to the wireless network only.
For details and information, send email to wireless@umn.edu
-----------------------------------------------

More info from the Wireless staff (from an email sent to sg:
For those not affiliated with the U, when they get the "wirewall" log-in page, there is a place to "create short term credentials for wireless access" by clicking the "Short Term Wireless Account Initiation" button.
That is, if they connect their laptop to "UofM Wireless" and launch a web browser, the authentication page will appear. It has the above link on it. Users can pay with a credit card for access. The price is listed on the page. Basically $5 a day. This is a new service, so it hasn't been advertised yet, but it should be usable.

WHO SHOVELS THE SNOW

If you notice an area on campus that is icy or in need of snow removal, please contact Landcare at 625-7361 or the FM Call Center at 624-2900.

WHO SHOVELS THE SNOW

When the snow falls on campus, FM’s Landcare and Buildings and Grounds crews are working hard to make sure the campus is accessible for faculty, staff, students and visitors. “We start clearing snow when hard surfaces like roads and sidewalks are covered. Contractors clear parking lots when snow is 2 inches or deeper,” explains Les Potts, FM’s Grounds Superintendent. “Our goal is to have a path open by 7 a.m.”

This means an early start for the 60 Landcare staff and student workers who are responsible for removing snow from the 60 miles of campus streets and sidewalks. They are assisted by FM’s Buildings and Grounds Workers who shovel, de-ice and sand building stairs and entrances.

If you notice an area on campus that is icy or in need of snow removal, please contact Landcare at 625-7361 or the FM Call Center at 624-2900.

CLA Facts 'n' Stats

CLA Assembly at which Dean Rosenstone gave his "State of the College" address. See below for content.

Colleagues,

Yesterday I attended the CLA Assembly at which Dean Rosenstone gave his
"State of the College" address. Below are a few figures he gave.

Marcia

This year the 135th anniversary of the college of liberal arts.

This year 12,000 applicants for the 2600 freshmen places in CLA.

Big increase in high-ability students: 35% of the Fr. class in top 10% of
their high school classes; 80% in the top 25% of high school class. 423
students in honors, with average 93rd percentile in high school class.

Retention rates up and 4-5 yr graduation rates up.

67 grad research partnerships funded.

$645,000 in funding to recruit & support grad students.

Faculty last yr got 109 grants totalling $18 million, double of that from 8
years ago.

CLA raised $90 million in gifts in last 7 years. 30% in endowments for
students; 60% in endowments for faculty support; rest for buildings, etc.

31 new tenure & tenure-track faculty this year. (You all know this.)

540 faculty in CLA; was 491 in 1996. Half the faculty has come in the past
7 years.

45 searches are authorized for this year. (for the "best on the planet.")

2004/05 budget is balanced despite $1.3 million in cuts. CLA got 0 for
salaries; the college funded 100% of salary increases, half coming from
tuition.

7% of CLA's budget comes from the state, via Univ's central administration.
This support has declined 26% since the past 5 years. 72% of this year's
budget comes from tuition.

CLA has one of the highest student/faculty ratios in the Big Ten. It has
fewer support staff per faculty member than all but 1 academic unit in the
University. CLA provides half of all the student instruction at the Univ.
CLA students earn 1/3rd of all degrees granted by the Univ.
