this is an earlier note from MS that I'm just getting entered in the blog. SG
Last year a sorority left a study binder in the Commons for members to use. They asked that it be placed in reference, but we determined that the commons was open longer which was better. A similar binder was also placed in other campus libraries - usually with the Circ/Ref desks.
This year we in reference never received nor were contacted about placing a binder here, although we have had a number of sorority members ask about it.

PS from SG: I referred the person who asked about this last month, and they went to the IC and didn't return, but I saw them with a folder or binder, so presumably the IC has this item again.
Many of you have already noticed the new McCollister Contemporary
Literature Collection on the first floor of Wilson Library. I am
pleased to announce this is a new "Popular Reading Collection," similar
to the one that already exists in the Wise Owl Cafe (Walter Library).
This collection was developed using the Wise Owl Cafe Popular Reading
Collection as a model and it was funded by a generous donation from
Robert McCollister.
This collection is being leased through Baker & Taylor Book Leasing.
The collection will contain a base of 200 books, 25% of the collection
will be returned to Baker & Taylor quarterly and new books will be ordered.
These books can be checked out by faculty, students and staff, only,
for two weeks at a time with no renewal. This is a browsing collection.
Titles are available in the catalog; they are not visible in the OPAC.
You can do a command line search for wsc=twilspop or you can get them
all (Walter and Wilson) with this search wcl=pop.
Just like the Wise Owl Collection I have created a LibraryThing page for
people to browse this collection online. Here is the url:
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/mccollister (Please note, there are
two separate LibraryThing accounts).
There is always information concerning both of these collections on the
staff WIKI: https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/CES/PopularReadingCollection
If anyone has any questions please contact me at grayjl@umn.edu or 624-9913.
I would like to thank the following people for their support and
assistance in putting this collection together: Jerrie Bayer, Betsy
Friesen, Christopher Rose, Charles Spetland, Lois Christian, Sharon
Folk, John Halvorsen, Peggy Johnson, Jerilyn Veldof, Kathy McGill, Eric
Byrd, and Ann Hall.

So you're wondering about that new sign and new shelf full of books across the lobby from the Reference desk?
It is the Robert and Virginia McCollister Contemporary Reading Collection , written about in the Winter Continuum (the 3. p.m. entry, page 11, in the centerfold of the magazine), before plans were fully decided. SG will photocopy that entry and post it in 180 and/or at the Ref desk fyi. The sign was installed today around 12 noon, and the books came in sometime later today.
Peggy told us informally that the books can be checked out by affiliates but are not listed in MNCAT. The collection is the same or similar to the Popular Reading Collection in the Wise Owl Cafe (read below for more details on that collection).
Watch for Jody's message and for a mention in the library staff Monday Memo.
Thanks to all for contributing information for this Blog entry! And if you're on the desk and have a chance to test the titles on our shelf against the link in the News blog (to the LibraryThing collection), please jump into this blog with a comment and let us know if you can find our titles in "their" "catalog".

From the Library News Blog article on the Popular Reading Collection at the Wise Owl Cafe:
The hectic pace of academic life can be stressful--and what better way to refresh and renew than to enjoy a beverage and a bit of light reading? The Popular Reading Collection in the Wise Owl Café is a circulating collection of popular fiction and nonfiction. The collection is accessible anytime the library is open.
Planning a trip to the Wise Owl? Curious to know in advance what's available in the Popular Reading Collection? Go here to browse and search titles. Collection materials rotate quarterly, and new titles are added monthly.

Wilson Periodicals Moves to MLAC
Wilson Library's Periodicals room has reached full shelving capacity. Even as we move steadily toward more electronic journal access, reduction of binding and staff costs and the space needed to house print journals over time, we are still adding approximately 300 volumes per month to the Periodical Room collection, or 3600 volumes per year, and we are out of room.
To gain the needed space, our goal is to move 30,000 volumes out of the Periodical Room to the Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC) compact storage facility in Andersen Library.
We have prepared a list of journal titles, the back issues of which we believe could be transferred to MLAC with minimal inconvenience to users. These fall into two main categories. The first group comprises journal titles for which we can provide the text to pre-1996 issues in electronic format, titles via JSTOR and other providers. Titles in the second group are those for which we received no issues after 1995 and which are likely to receive less use than titles currently received. Subject librarians have reviewed these ceased or cancelled journal runs in their disciplines and have determined that these could be transferred to MLAC with little inconvenience to users.
Between now and April 1st, we are communicating news about these moves to our users and soliciting input from them about titles that they may want us to retain in Wilson Library. An information web page and links to the title list can be found at:
http://www.lib.umn.edu/site/permove2007.phtml
A link to this page appears under News from the Libraries on the top UL web page. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Read in the summer M about the Ivory Tower: the undergraduate art and literary magazine of the University of Minnesota (also published online) and note that the new incarnation is listed in MNCAT, currently being catalogued for Wilson Library.
The original version (1965-1969) that served as the inspiration is hidden in the MNCAT record for the Minnesota daily, with a reference to the alternate, briefer title Ivory Tower. Read on to see both records. Note that Dennis caught the incomplete info in MNCAT whereas WCAT shows a longer run. He has reported it to FIXIT. From what I can tell on June 14, the record is searchable by title Ivory Tower now, but the five year run info is the same, and I am sure Denny said the run was longer. I'll keep you posted. SG
Instead of inventing a name for the new publication, they chose to honor the past. "The old Ivory Tower was stylish and cool," says Jake Ricker, the magazine's other editor-in-chief. (According to Hampl, Keillor saw it as a "kiddie New Yorker.")

its own and is also findable only with keyword phrase search.)

Dennis,
We used to have standing orders for phonefiche of many different cities, but most of them were cancelled several years ago except for the ones for Minneapolis and St. Paul. I think Celia said that we needed to keep getting them, since we serve as the archival location or something to that effect.
ProQuest has now informed us that they have made a decision to stop producing their phonefiche after 2005. We have recently received 2005 fiches of St. Paul Yellow Pages, and the only one we still have not received is 2005 St.Paul White Pages. We have already received both 2005 WP and YP of Minneapolis.
Thank you.

Last night I had a student looking for the Medical Health Administration theses done here at the U. The MnCat location is Business Reference. They are located in the alcove behind the Bus Ref Room 4 office --next to the Exit door.
The big Bhutan book, Bhutan: A Visual Odyssey Across the Last Himalayan Kingdom, the largest book ever made is now on display within the Special Collections/Rare Books suite 111, during regular hours 8:30 - 4:30. Check it out (figuratively) because it is amazing. -sg

Hello Everybody. By midday today the records work (Big Thanks to Michael J) and physical move for the 1995 and 1996 MnU-M Theses from the 3rd floor to the Annex will be complete. Please note the new location for these items, and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Jackie

Hi, Wilson Library staff--
The Wilson Stack Maintenance staff are moving some older University of
Minnesota Ph.D. dissertations (humanities and social sciences subjects)
from Wilson Library to MLAC. The new policy is at:
http://staff.lib.umn.edu/cdm/ppf/theses.phtmlon the CDM web site.
We will continue to keep circulating copies of U of Minnesota humanities
and social sciences doctoral dissertations from 1980 to the present (25
years) in Wilson Library. Pre 1980 circulating copies of humanities and
social sciences doctoral dissertations will be kept in MLAC.
Archival copies of doctoral dissertations are also kept in the University
Archives.
In addition, Wilson Stack Maintenance staff have moved 1995-1996 U of
Minnesota Masters theses from the regular Wilson collection to the Wilson
subbasement annex, where they join the 1962-1994 theses already housed in
the subbasement annex.
University of Minnesota dissertations and dissertations from other CIC
institutions (University of Michigan, Michigan State University,
Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, Indiana University,
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois-Chicago,
University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Iowa and
University of Wisconsin, Madison) from 1997 to date are available in
full-text (PDF) without charge to current U of M students, staff, and
faculty through Digital Dissertations.

Hi everyone--
I need to make a small clarification to Judy's well articulated message
that the 1995 - 1996 U of Minnesota Masters theses have not moved to the
Annex yet.
Our staff is working with Technical Services staff to get locations
changed. As soon as they are moved we will notify you! Please don't
hesitate to contact me with questions
Julia K
There has been no change in locations for Master's theses. 1962 to 1994 are located in the Annex, and 1995 to the present are on the 3rd floor. I checked the theses in the Annex to make sure that no 1995s had been misshelved down here, and everything looks like it's in the right place.
Let me know if we can be of more help,
Julia

CDs from ETRC
June 25, 2003 note from SG
Reffers, yesterday I met with Jennifer Claybourne-Torkelson who used to work in the ETRC (and now is at Andersen) to learn more about the CDs from ETRC that are now in Wilson 180B.
A patron came in asking for a CD that has two previous editions cataloged and on the shelves upstairs, but the most recent edition owned is listed in MNCAT as being in Reference. However, without knowing whether it was a former ETRC title or not (it is), I made a guess and dug in the two cartons in Lisa's office and found it after the patron left.
What's the next step?We have the CD but it is not loaded on the Ref machine. I notified the patron, who had checked out the previous edition. He found what he needed in the older edition.

Thank you.--I will get the list of the CDs copied and into the CD notebook at the desk, and also a copy in 180B. A couple of things to remember, if you get requests:
--Each title on the list is followed by the name of the library staff member who is the expert for that file.
--Most or all of the social sciences CDs were removed from the list of CDs coming to Reference. Those have either been added to MNCAT, or withdrawn. What remains is Humanities CDs. All are loaded on the computer in 180B.
--All of the CDs are in the top drawer of the cabinet in 180B. The cabinet is locked. Use the small silver key to open it.
--In the bottom drawer of the cabinet are software products including EndNote and DynaText. These are not for general use.
--The setup on the screen is different than the last time either Jennifer or I were in 180. If you decide to bring a patron in,
---turn on the computer
----Click on CANCEL to get past the logon screen
----click on the Programs folder in order to view the icons for the various files that are loaded on the machine.
--A list of the CD titles (without the selectors' initials) will be posted on the glass door or window of 180B
--If you have a question contact the appropriate selector. I will get copies of the list (with initials) for the room, the notebook and the black CD cabinet in 180 so that you can find this list easily. If the selector is out, contact either me or Jennifer.

Reminder note that we now have a separate blue notebook, "Annex Newspapers by Title," shelved with the previous blue "Newspaper" notebooks in the Reference Desk collection.
Van Houlson did a survey of newspapers housed in the Annex. Besides being more up to date than the information in our existing blue notebooks, this one (a) is arranged by title, rather than geographic location and (b) includes many notes on condition of the paper in our copies, and on availability of reprint editions or microform if we want to explore replacing our copies. It's also a lot easier to read (clearly typeface) than the old "copy of copy of cards" typeface in the other notebooks.
Note that this notebook covers newspapers in the annex only, wheras the previous set of blue notebooks covers (in theory) all newspapers in our collection, those in the Newspaper Room as well as those in the Annex.
Subject: History of Education microfiche collection
Date: 4Jun04 4:06pm
Greetings-- fyi...
As some of you may know we have a large (32,000+) microfiche collection on
the history of education which is uncataloged, and not at all
accessible. Now there is a searchable online guide to this collection at
the Gale site. I've added a link to this collection and guide on the
Education RQS page. This guide could be downloaded or searched by a
researcher.
I'm exploring the possibility of getting marc records for these items to
increase access but that is not likely to happen in the near future.
If you happen to go to the Guide page and do a search using Minnesota
(select search, and select the History of Education collection), one of the
odd records retrieved is the list of our holdings as of 1872 (The library
of the University of Minnesota: an alphabetical catalogue of authors,
complete to March 31, 1872.). Laurel
