To the University Community -
Summer means road work and parking facility repairs. We wanted to let you know about some upcoming projects that may impact your travel to or around campus.

University Avenue
Westbound University Avenue, between 23rd Avenue SE and Oak Street, will close beginning Monday, May 19 for work necessary to the infrastructure of the East Gateway District. The road is scheduled to be closed approximately two weeks.

Westbound vehicular traffic will be diverted around the stadium site - north on 23rd Avenue SE, west on 6th Street SE, south on Oak Street to 4th Street SE where traffic can continue to travel in a westbound direction.

Pedestrian and bike access will remain open through that stretch of roadway.

For stadium construction updates, visit the stadium web site at http://www1.umn.edu/stadium/construction.php.

23rd Avenue SE
Electrical and duct work for the East Gateway District will impact the section of 23rd Avenue SE between the Transitway and Thompson Center for Environmental Management. The work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 27 but it will not begin until the University Avenue project is completed. It will continue for approximately 30 days.

The street will remain open but will be cut back to one lane in each direction throughout the duration of the project. Pedestrian and bike access will remain open.

This project may cause the Campus Connector bus stop along that stretch to temporarily relocate slightly north. Signs will be posted.

For the latest information on this project, visit http://www1.umn.edu/pts/hottopics.htm.

Lot 33 (East Bank)
On Monday, May 19, operations for Lot 33 and Lot 37 will be combined for the summer. The entrance of Lot 33 on 5th Street SE will be closed and patrons will need to enter the lots through the Lot 37 entrance. The crossover between the two lots will remain open to allow vehicles to park closer to the research buildings east of Lot 33.

Carpoolers may enter from 6-9 am and pay a flat fee of $2.50 with 2 or more people in the car or with a carpool permit. Daily parkers may enter at any time after 6 am and pay the daily rate of $3.75. Parking fees will be collected as patrons enter the lot.

Oak Street Ramp (East Bank)
Beginning Monday, May 19 and lasting through August 17, Oak Street Ramp will undergo structural concrete repair work. The restoration is part of our regular upkeep and maintenance of the facility.

Up to 200 spaces at a time will be cordoned off to perform the work. Signs will be posted to notify drivers which areas will be temporarily closed.

Public parking will not be available during this time so we suggest that you park in Lot C79. Lot C79 will become a daily rate ($3.75) lot for the summer. The entrance is on Essex Street SE. Public parking will also be available in East River Road Garage. If you enter after 5 pm, the rate is a flat fee of $5.50.

Later this summer, additional projects for the new stadium will impact travel around the East Gateway District. We encourage you to visit our Web site at http://www.pts.umn.edu for the latest information.

As always, PTS is committed to assisting you in your campus commute by keeping you updated on transportation information.

Thank you for your attention,
Bob Baker, Executive Director
University of Minnesota, Parking and Transportation Services

IC construction notes

All
If everything goes as plans this is the schedule.

10/7 - 10/8 - Grazzinia Bros. staff will be here to fill the holes in the floor terrazzo. This requires placing the terrazzo filler in the holes, drying time, and floor grinding (noise) to smooth it out. They will be installing poly around the Info Commons area and smaller poly enclosures over each area as they work.

10/11 - 10/13 - The Information Commons walls will be put in place - noise at times. The may deliver and store the wall product in the lobby area later this week.
10/14 - 10/15 Telecom/Electrical trades will return to make connections
10/18 - 10/20 The Custodians will deep clean the floor
10/21 - 10/22 The furniture will be delivered and installed

and somewhere between today and 10/22 the HVAC system will be completed, the ceiling tiles replaced, the Information Commons sign hung, and all the other details handled.
10/25 - 10/26 finish details and work punch list item.s
10/27 ---- Computer installation.
11/11 at 11 am - Grand Opening
Questions/concerns/issues - check with me.

An earllier note from Sharon:
------------------------------------------

During the next 7-14 days the HVAC system trades persons and terrazzo floor repair trades will be working in the 1st floor lobby area. They are going to block off the entire lobby area from the first pillar back. The work will be noisy at times but not constantly. During this period they will close the glass doors leading to the Reference Collection/computer station carpet area.

They will also be moving the soft seating furniture area to the side (inside the blocked area), it will be unusable by patrons until the work is completed.

At one point, probably tomorrow and maybe Monday, they will be blocking the walkway that is now used for direct access from front lobby to 160/170 area. This will only be for 4-8 hours. Staff will need to go around, a horseshoe path course, through the 180 carpeted Reference Collection area for 160/170 access.
Questions/Concerns - get back to me.
Thank you

Etherjack update

Date: Thu, 5 Aug 2004 10:06:24 -0500
To: Mary Pat
From: Kay
Subject: etherjacks for laptops

Hi Mary Pat,
There are three active etherjack lines with cables available for laptop users in Bus Ref/Gov Info area. Two are on the pillar in the center of the room near the bus ref stacks and the other one is near the Uniprint machine just outside the Gov Docs office.

Jaime says that any phone line will work for modem users but it sounds like we don't provide that service in the open public areas. She is going to get a complete inventory from John GL of etherjack locations available for the public and will send it out next week.

CD workstations

The two CD-ROM workstations and their contents have been consolidated and replaced by one new computer. The new CD-ROM workstation is permanently located on the Writing Center desk to the right of the reference desk. No password is needed to use the computer. The screen saver says "CD-ROM Terminal" and should be easily identifiable. Print jobs will be sent to UniPrint.

In addition, the Cyrillic workstation has been temporarily placed on the left side of the Writing Center desk. This computer will eventually be moved to the Info Commons upon its completion. Any questions or concerns, let me know!
Thanks, Lisa

DAI during the move

Subject: Correction. . .
Dear H/SS Friends, Please see correction below; we did decide to consolidate *all* of DAI on the second floor. (Some was transferred to the Annex last year, and this has proved difficult to manage for the students.) Best, Celia

Dear Celia
Actually the DAI that is being transferred to the 3rd floor from Reference is now on yellow trucks on the 4th floor. They don't have room for it on the 3rd floor yet. We needed to move it so we could clear the extensions shelves.

Dear H/SS Friends,

Some large sets from the PT through Z section of the reference room are temporarily relocated on yellow trucks in the vicinity of the B's in Wils Ref near the back of the lobby.

These sets will not be transferred. No sets are currently located on the fourth floor on yellow trucks, a plan that had also been mentioned for temporary purposes.

Have a good evening,

Celia

CD ROMS in Reference ETC

1 - Mary Pat has taken some large sets in the P through Z section of the reference room in foreign languages and has placed them on yellow trucks in the vicinity of the B's in Wils Ref (near the back of the lobby). This is temporary; these sets will not be transferred.

2 - Jaime in Systems set up our CD computers with a pop-up indicating user ID that might not be totally clear. I learned today that the user ID for the CD computers (located currently in the writing center area) is as follows (in lower case):

reference

You leave out a password, and you simply press .

If you forget, this information is written in on the inside of the back cover of the daybook. Have a good evening! Celia

Printing from CD-ROM workstations

From: Lisa
Subject: Printing from CD-ROM workstations
All,

Patrons can print now print from the CD-ROM workstations located on the Writing Center desk. There is only one ethernet connection available, so make sure the BLUE ethernet cable is plugged into the etherjack located on the back of the appropriate workstation's CPU. Print jobs will be sent to the UNIPRINT station.

If this doesn't make sense to you, let me know and I'll give you a demonstration.

Thanks,
Lisa
