Short courses are now on a new url: http://uttc.umn.edu/training/
with links on the bottom to OIT and ADCS. SG has added it to Ref bookmarks under UM Computer shortcourses.
Stephen Feinstein is teaching a workshop this week and I'm giving my first demo of the Visual History Archive, the database of Holocaust testimonies on video that users can view on the Web only at on-campus computers. The students in the class are mostly high school teachers. They may come in anytime during the rest of the summer, as they have an extended due date for their projects.
I will be checking the public workstations. It's possible the sound won't work from those.
You can offer them the privacy of the consultation workstation.
You will log them in to the station, and then help them find the database http://www.lib.umn.edu/vha - under V in Indexes, and listed in MNCAT as Visual History Archive.
Be sure to use the Internet Explorer. The viewable videotapes will only run on pcs using IE, not Mozilla.
The user must then register (set up their own personal account) with USC's VHA site in order to search the database.
The headphones are locked in the cabinet. If you can't remember where the keys are ask Mary or Susan.
There is a special powerpoint for this class at the U Libraries VHA USER GUIDE page. On this same page there is a user guide by USC (31p pdf), and a printed copy of the USC guide in a binder at the consultation station.
The database is also featured with a large photo inside the recently released University Libraries SPRING/SUMMER newsletter (green brochure) available in the handout rack in the lobby.
Visual History Archive
developed by the USC Shoah Foundation institute for Visual History and Education
www.lib.umn.edu/vha
The general public¬ as well as University of Minnesota-Twin Cities students, faculty, and staff ¬ now have access to the world’s largest archive of visual histories of the Holocaust.
In February 2007 the University Libraries launch a two-terabyte digital media cache of testimonies from the Shoah Foundation Institute’s Visual History Archive. The University of Minnesota is among 11 universities worldwide that the Foundation has invited to license the Archive’s content.
The USC Shoah Foundation Institute grew out of the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, founded by Steven Spielberg to document the experiences of survivors and other witnesses of the Holocaust. The Shoah Foundation currently provides licensed access to six universities worldwide. These partners can, in turn, give users access to the entire archive over the high-speed Internet2 research network.

I had someone today looking for an html course supposedly in room 210 Wilson; in fact it was 210 Walter. Reminder (this may be in the blog already) that a list of University Technology Training Center short courses (which this was) can be found at
