you should feel free to call Joey for a quick question just as you might with another specialist and to refer patrons to him for a more in-depth appointment with a patron.
I'll ask him to put his business card behind the desk.) The cool thing is that Joey has access to the IC computers through VNC, which means he can remotely view and control them. If a patron has a cell phone they can work together with the patron in the IC and him in Walter.

As you probably know, Joey is our 3/4 staff person who is managing the Info Commons and has been officing in 180 near Denny's space. In the past, when a difficult question would come up regarding IC technology/etc. that the IC staffer couldn't answer, occasionally that patron made their way over to the Ref Desk for help. The Reffer could then run back into 180 and hope to find either Joey, Caroline, or myself to see if we could help.
Awhile ago Caroline and I had asked for informal feedback from IRIS staff to see if the ability to do this might merit leaving Joey in Wilson. Most folks said it wasn't a big deal and that he should move with the rest of the new department.
So what you need to know is that you should feel free to call Joey for a quick question just as you might with another specialist and to refer patrons to him for a more in-depth appointment with a patron. I'll ask him to put his business card behind the desk.) The cool thing is that Joey has access to the IC computers through VNC, which means he can remotely view and control them. If a patron has a cell phone they can work together with the patron in the IC and him in Walter. Joey's also frequently on IM if you'd like to contact him that way
The Writing Center in the Information Commons is closed until Fall semester.
Jerilyn will look into getting the IC Web site updated.

Just a reminder that the CJK/Cyrillic/ADA Adjustable Workstation is now located in the Info Commons. It is just in side the door closest to Room 170.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to remind you that we are going to start the IC schedule on Monday, which will be the opening day barring any natural disasters and/or setbacks in the computer setup/construction. I will let you know if anything changes.
Also, the grand opening is on Thursday, 11 November from 11 am- 3 pm. Please volunteer some of your time to come and help with the festivities! If you are already scheduled to work on Thursday, I am already counting on you for those times! Thanks!

This is the text from the IC public page:
The Information Commons is a "one-stop shopping" resource for students needing help with research, technology, or writing help. The IC will bring together library, writing, and computing experts in one area with ready access to staff, computers, and information resources, specifically aimed at the research needs of undergraduate students.

The Information Commons pre construction process continues
A few weeks ago we relocated 10 public computers and the 'grand' table to the 1st floor North window/carpeted area opened up by the recent removal of the CD ROM offices and the Reference Collection shift. It looks great and patrons easily discovered the new area.
Also, one public computer was moved to the Music Library, one to the Business Library lobby entrance area by Room 10, three to the basement central lobby area and three to the Periodicals area.
Next dominos --
Thursday 8/5 - the remaining 8 computers located on the 4 round oak tables will be removed from the 1st floor lobby area. The computers will be relocated to the center computer areas on 2nd and 3rd floor on Tuesday/Wednesday 8/10-8/11
Friday, 8/6 - The 4 round oak tables will be moved to the current soft seating area on 2nd and 3rd floor. The soft seating will be placed in the round computer tables footprint space in the 1st floor lobby area.
Also on Friday 8/6 The remaining blue/gray landscape panels and counters will be removed from the 1st floor lobby area freeing the proposed Info Commons space for Pre construction electrical and HVAC system work which could start next week.
Confused yet? You are not alone. Keeping the various dominos in order to reach the desired end result on projects I sometimes confuse myself. Please contact me if questions/concerns or on Thursday 8/12 walk through the areas mentioned and view the end result.
Thank you. Sharon

IC Photo Gallery is up. NOTE! This is a staff side link. Caroline will be developing a public IC page. The IC main site will probably be linked from the not yet fleshed out Undergad Library site. There is also a staff side page for the UG at http://staff.lib.umn.edu/ug/
Keep watching! --SG

We have posted a PDF file of the floor plan for the Wilson Information Commons on the Libraries staff Web site.
You can retrieve the plan from a link under the top heading on the left, "Spotlight on the Libraries."
You will see that the plan shows removal of the CD-ROM rooms in 170 and where the large table for ten public computers will be located. The front wall of the information Commons will be glass. Soft seating will be placed in front of this wall. A partial wall, to hold building and event directories, is planned for installation at some time in front of the soft seating (immediately as one enters the library); however, the Information Commons project does not include funding for the partial wall. Some small changes have been made since the architect sent the PDF file to me and more minor changes will be possible, but the plan give you a sense of what is in the works.
Questions can be directed to Sharon , Jerilyn , or me.
