FYI: Both Minneapolis and St. Paul Public Schools will be on spring break from March 31-April 4. Minneapolis schools have an added day off this Friday, March 28. Both school districts resume classes on Monday, April 7.
Once again our AP European History class from Armstrong High School would like to visit Wilson library for our annual research project. We have had great success using your facility in the past. I might add that these
students are upper level, high acheiving and most importantly immaculately behaved students. We have gone virtually undetected on this trip in the past. Please let me know if there's anything new about the library that we need to know, and if you are still the proper contact to inform you of our visit. I still have the materials you have sent from years past, but if there are any updates, let me know. We plan to come Friday 12/7 from 9:30-1:30.
Thanks for your time.

Total of 56 students for research. We have brought them the last two years.
S30 C reserved 9 AM to 1:20 PM
Paul, we have reserved a computer classroom for your group on the 11th, since it will give them a place to search on the computers without disrupting our students if they need computers during finals week. Normally we only reserve this room when a librarian can be present the entire time, but we'll make an exception for your group to give them space to work. They'll need to double up on computers. If I can add a second room later I will do that too.
----------
Susan G. added S30 A from 11-1:20 for them to spread out (56 students plus several adult chaperones). Presumably they will be moving up and down from the collections to these two rooms that day so I wanted you to be aware of this exception.
For Tuesday Susan reserved S30B for the second group from 10 AM to 1:30. There's a class that runs til 10.
Before 10 they can use the large alcove just to the left of the Business/Government information desk in the basement - look for the orange/brown walls and the Christo Gates in Central Park posters! There are about six tables there.
Susan
high school group to come Wed. May 16 instead of May 10! the other details remain the same.
Bloomington Jefferson high school. The students will all be seniors, with some foreign exchange students.
25-30 students
arriving early leaving before lunch.
They will meet for a time in the History Day tables area near Business/Government information.
They have been given behavior guidelines.
She is a media librarian and is very serious about getting them into a research library. Let me know if you need help that day and/or if there are any problems.
Marghe Tabar is bringing a large group (82) with five adults from St. Paul Academy in on Friday April 13. The visit will be short and they're coming with call numbers. If they do need to use indexes I've encouraged them to share workstations. Marghe has been bringing large groups for many years and her groups have always been easy to deal with. However, if you experience any difficulties please feel free to contact me. Susan

Wilson Reference staff:
Now that History Day is subsiding, other school teachers are wanting to get their students to Wilson for a visit. When school teachers call the Reference Desk asking for a tour, refer them to the SCHOOL VISITORS page (bookmarked on REF BOOKMARKS):
http://www.lib.umn.edu/help/orientation/k-12teachers.phtml
More details:
Do encourage them to LET US KNOW when they plan to visit, and HOW MANY are in their group, especially if the group size is more than 10 students. (A note asking them to do so is included on the K12 page.)
The K12 page gives teachers good advice on how to prepare before a visit, what to expect (and what not to expect) when they arrive, but it also links to the hours page, to free resources to search, to info for College in the Schools teachers, and History Day (because these last two have different services and arrangements than other K12 visit planners), and much more!

A teacher from Champlin will be bringing a total of 44 h.s. students to Wilson on May 12 & 15 (splitting the group up between the two dates). I've reserved room 2 for them on both dates.
He brought students last year. They work on U.S. History topics and primarily use newspapers. There will be several adults including 2 teachers and a high school senior/mentor/TA.
The times for both dates are 9 AM to 1:30 PM. (updated April 26)

Ten Education Dept. Grants to “Lighthouse High Schools”
Three-year effort to pilot, implement meaningful high school reform
(Roseville, MN…) The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) today
announced ten schools across the state would serve as “Lighthouse High
Schools” to pilot and implement ways to improve students’ achievement and
make their transitions between middle and high school and between high
school and higher education more successful. Each of the ten schools will
receive $10,000 grants in the first year of a three-year program. MDE also
plans to support these schools with expertise and technical help throughout
the three years.
“We have an impressive group of bold partners to help us launch our latest
effort to focus on results that will make high school more meaningful for
Minnesota students,” said MDE assistant commissioner for academic
excellence Mary Ann Nelson. “We are committed to support our Lighthouse
High Schools over the next three years as they work to improve student
performance and readiness for higher education and the world beyond.”
The ten selected schools scored highest in an application process measuring
their commitment, preparation and support for the pilot project and the
intensive, data-driven evaluation process involved. Each of the schools
will now begin to develop and implement reforms aimed at improving teaching
and learning, getting more students to graduate in four years and sending
more graduates to colleges and universities.
The broad goals of the project include improved curriculum and instruction,
developing relationships with caring adults in personalized learning
environments and building quality leadership for teachers and principals.
“Lighthouse High Schools can choose from a wide range of techniques such as
sharpening their focus on the data, changing the structure of senior year
and bringing instruction and career planning more in line with student
learning,” Nelson noted.
Minnesota’s ten new Lighthouse High Schools will be Alexandria’s Jefferson;
Bloomington’s Kennedy; Long Prairie-Gray Eagle; Patrick Henry and Hmong
Academy Charter School in Minneapolis; Mora; Mounds View’s Irondale; Pine
City; Waubun, Ogema, White Earth; and Westonka.

Just a reminder that Holy Family Catholic High School will be here with about 50 students, just from 8:00 to 10:30 AM tomorrow. They are well prepared and have copies of the walking tour and know about our expectations. Feel free to report any questions or problems to me. Susan
To: "Wilson Contacts for K12 Visits":
Subject: K12 visits May 20 & 24: 58 from Champlin HS
We have two group visits from Champlin HS coming from 9-2 on Friday MAY 20 and from 11:30-2 on Tuesday May 24. This is good advance notice and he actually called a month ago about this with tentative information.
[Just to clarify, May 20th is the Friday during break week. May Session begins on the 23rd of May and ends on June 10th.] - Lynn
There will be 58 students on both dates. I have reserved Wilson room 2 for both dates, but there is a conflict for the first hour on the 20th. I will see if I can arrange for a meeting change so they can use room 2 right away when they arrive.
Their topic is U.S. history and Paul will be sending me more information about the assignment. He will request enough chaperones to provide one adult per ten students.
