As of a few days ago, we have suddently acquired access to a ProQuest
online index to the MINNEAPOLIS TRIBUNE for 1867-1922. I asked
Charles S., who said that Proquest suddently turned it on, that we
are not being charged for it, but that it is unclear if we'll continue
to be able to access it. He doesn't where why/where Proquest did this.
It brings up citations (and sometimes abstracts) only -- no full
text, and no pdf page or story images. Still, it's obviously useful.
There is no record in MNCAT or the "Indexes and Databases A to Z"
menu for it. (And if we may not be getting permanent access, that's
as well for now.) The only way to get to it seems to be to go to
any of the other Proquest newspaper databases, such as the CHICAGO
TRIBUNE or NEW YORK TIMES historical files, click on the "select
mulitple databases" link, go down to the "Historical Databases"
list at the bottom of the screen, check the MINNEAPOLIS TRIBUNE
"on" (and then check "off" whatever other paper you entered to get
to the list, unless you do want to search it in conjunction with
the TRIBUNE).
"pig's eye" brings up 31 documents
"little big horn" brings up 53
chippewa brings up 2303
duluth brings up 58,084 etc.

Just tried to find a letter published in the STAR TRIBUNE a couple of days ago. I believe LEXIS/NEXIS at least used to get STRIB text into the database in one to two days, but this time I couldn't find anything newer than five days old (May 16th; today is May 21st). Same with PROQUEST NEWSTAND. When I went to the STAR TRIBUNE's own site, I discovered a search in their own archives also turned up nothing after May 16th, so probably L/Ni's slowness to update can be blamed on the STRIB itself. Don't know if the upheavals and layoffs are to blame or what...

At one time, Augsburg would let non-Augsburg students check out books from their library if the individual left a cash deposit (which was returned when the book was returned). I've now been informed this is no longer the case -- non-Augsburg people who want to borrow books from them directly must join their Friends of the Library group (at $50/year). Of course, all are still welcome to use materials on the premises etc. as usual. / Denny
My theory here is that reference books devoted solely/specifically to Minnesota
subjects are (logically enough) in many locations. The "main" Minnesota (history,
mostly) call number is F601 through F615, and for that range I'm listing only
the most useful/used titles there. For the rest of the room, I'm trying to
list "everything," even if very old, very specialized, and/or very obscure.
(Additions welcome.) / Denny Lien

U. of Minnesota Seeks to Share Expertise With Outsiders
By GOLDIE BLUMENSTYK
Concierge service is no longer just for classy hotels.
In a quest to make its expertise more available to local industries and civic organizations, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities has begun to quietly roll out the higher-education equivalent, in a program it calls the Front Door.
The service, a project of the university's newly created Academic and Corporate Relations Center, is designed to make the university more "transparent" to outsiders.
"What we wanted to do is bring down the walls," says R. Timothy Mulcahy, vice president for research.
As part of the new effort, the university has hired five "relationship managers" with expertise in areas like health care and engineering, each of whom has been assigned about 20 companies and organizations that are considered their accounts.
The managers learn about the research needs of their accounts. If the companies or organizations need research or other assistance from the university, the managers can help them identify appropriate people to take on the work, either as consultants or in sponsored-research.
Companies and other organizations not designated as accounts can also contact the Front Door office for help. Mr. Mulcahy says the staff members there will make sure inquiries get a clear and quick response. "We do not play phone tag with you," he says.
Since the university is part of the 20-member Midwest Research University Network, Front Door personnel will also draw upon faculty researchers at other institutions in the region.
The Front Door is just one example of the ways universities are trying to be more helpful in economic development and civic life.
In this case, the effort was partly prompted by a high-profile push from prominent corporate and community leaders in the region, who three years ago came together as the Itasca Project and identified several community issues that needed attention to keep the Twin Cities economically competitive.
The opaqueness of the university ranked high on the list, along with transportation and racial relations, says James R. Campbell, a retired banker who is chairman of the Itasca Project. (It's named after a state park.)
"It's a huge university, and there's all kinds of research going on up and down the halls," but companies do not have easy ways to learn about it, says Mr. Campbell.
He says the new structure suggests that the administrators got the message: "They've rewired the university to be significantly more responsive."
Mr. Mulcahy says the service seems to be striking a chord. The office has yet to even publicly announce the program, he says, and "we're already getting 10 calls a day."

The Minnesota Authors Campaign is raising funds for Minneapolis Public Library by promoting MN authors -- $500 buys a (literal) chair with a plaque on it. Their website has a long list of Minnesota-identified authors, past and present, all genres, which looks broadly useful for reference purposes. I'll copy the names in the extended entry; the link is

project and those using Como Avenue SE will see familiar signs of road
construction in their area.
EAST RIVER PARKWAY BRIDGE
East River Parkway, between Franklin and Yale Avenues, will be closed
for reconstruction of the Bridal Veil Falls bridge. The road will
close MONDAY, MAY 8 and reopen in October.
Vehicular traffic detour:
From Franklin Avenue - Follow 27th Avenue SE to University Avenue and
turn left (west). At Huron Boulevard, University Avenue becomes a
one-way going east, so curve right on Huron Boulevard to Oak Street.
Turn left and follow Oak Street back to East River Parkway.
From Oak Street - Traffic will detour north along Oak Street to
University Avenue. Proceed east to 27th Avenue and take a right to
head back to East River Parkway.
For pedestrian and bike traffic only, East River Parkway will remain
open adjacent to the construction site.
For more information, visit the City of Minneapolis web site at

COMO AVENUE SE
Begun last summer, this project is slated to finish this October. The
Como project is a $4.2 million major reconstruction of the roadway
including replacement of the storm drain, curb and gutter, driveway
aprons, sidewalks and pavement. Bike lanes will also be added.
This summer, Como Avenue will be impacted from 22nd Avenue SE to 24th
Avenue SE. Already underway, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway
(BNSF) will remove and replace the railroad bridge over Como Avenue
between 22nd and 23rd Avenue SE. Work is expected to be completed by
mid-July.
Between August and October, roadway work - storm drain, water main,
paving, etc. - will be completed on Como Avenue between 22nd and 24th
Avenue SE.
Traffic on Como Avenue SE is detoured from 18th Avenue SE to Hennepin
Avenue to 29th Avenue SE. Metro Transit buses will use 22nd Avenue SE
instead of 18th Avenue SE.
For complete information on the Como Avenue project, visit
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/public-works/cip/comoavese/index.asp#TopOfPage.
EAST RIVER PARKWAY RECONSTRUCTION
East River Parkway will be closed to all traffic - including
pedestrians and bikes - between Arlington Street (near Appleby Hall)
and Norris Hall from June 1 - August 29. Due to last year's
storm-related washout, major reconstruction work will be done on the
roadway including storm sewers and paving.
Lots C46 and C20, along with the meters adjacent to Norris Hall, will
be open for parking.
For the latest information on the project, please contact Joe Jameson
(612-625-4399) at Capital Planning/Contract Management.

New archive is online time machine
Many of our great-grandparents were sharp dressers, partied a lot and worked really, really hard.
At least, that's the impression one gets from browsing through a new online archive of historical Minnesota photos.
"Minnesota Reflections" is a collection of more than 5,000 photos from more than 50 cultural heritage organizations across the state.
The project took four years to complete, said Jim Dildine of the Minnesota Historical Society. Close to $500,000 in federal and state grants has been spent to date, with local historical societies pitching in with time and equipment.
To avoid potential copyright issues, the archive focused first on photos from 1908 and earlier. The next round will add photos from the 1910s and '20s, as well as letters and documents.
Check out fish and cabins
The archive is geared toward researchers and students, Dildine said, but it should appeal to anyone with an interest in Minnesota history.
"You've got a highly educated population in Minnesota," he said. "They wonder, 'What did a stringer of fish look like at Mille Lacs? What did the Iron Range look like? What did the site of my lake cabin look like in 1906?' "
The digital archive already is gaining popularity with historic restoration buffs and real-estate developers wanting a look at old buildings, Dildine said.

The Minnesota Historical Society has launched a
Minnesota Veterans Grave Registration Index, a
searchable online index to over 72,000 Minnesota
veterans' grave registrations. It's available for
free searching at http://people.mnhs.org/vgri/.
Note this index is not complete -- it does not
include all veterans ever buried in Minnesota.
commentary (continued) from ResearchBuzz:
The bulk of the information is for veterans who
died between 1930 and 1969, but there are veterans
from the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The
earliest date is 1857 and the latest is 1975. You
may search the index by last name or by date
range, county of burial, or the conflicts in which
they served. A search for the last name Smith
found 460 results. Results list the name of the
veteran, the conflict in which they served, and
the date of their deaths. (Some listings didn't
contain all this information but most of the ones
I looked at did.)
If you want more information than that you'll have
to order a report from the Minnesota Historical
Society; reports are $8. The reports can contain
the full first, middle, and last name of the
veteran, date and place of enlistment, serial
number, rank, date and place of discharge, legal
residence, date and place of birth, date and place
of death, cause of death, name and address of next
of kin, date and place of burial, name of
cemetery, and location of the grave. Sometimes
information is missing or incomplete.
The Winona Newspaper Project
There's now a searchable archive for three old newspapers of Winona, Minnesota. The newspapers, available at http://www.winona.edu/library/databases/winonanewspaperproject.htm , include the Winona Argus, the Winona Daily Republican and the Winona Republican Herald. The newspapers span 125,000 pages but it's hard to tell from the overview page if the archive is actually complete.
The papers may be browsed or searched. The software for reviewing the archive prefers Internet Explorer but seems to work fine with Firefox. I searched all publications for the word mining and got over 3900 results. Results include date, number of words in the article, and the location of the article in the paper.
Click on the headline and the article itself will pop up in a new window. Despite warnings about the paper quality, I found all the articles I looked at very easy to read.

Resources
You can check out books from the Twin Cities Bungalow Club collection at the Merriam Park Library branch of the St. Paul Library. Ask to see the list kept at the reference desk. You can also reserve them online. Here's how.
You must have a library card from one of the following Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA) libraries: St. Paul Public, Ramsey County, Minneapolis Public, Hennepin County, Dakota County, Washington County, Carver County, Anoka County or Scott County. Go to the library nearest your home to get a card.
Once you have a card, take it, along with a photo ID, to any St. Paul public library to get in their database. Once you've been established in the database, you may borrow or request materials from the collection supported by the Bungalow Club.
You'll need a PIN (Personal Identification Number) to reserve a book online. For complete instructions on how to register for a PIN, go to www.stpaul.lib.mn.us, select Catalog Search, and select "How to Get a Pin." Also have your library card number handy before reserving online.
To search for and reserve Bungalow Club materials online, go to www.stpaul.lib.mn.us and select "Catalog Search." After selecting the book you want, select the "Request" icon. You will be prompted to enter your name, barcode PIN and pickup location. At this time, if you do not already have a PIN you will be prompted to create one. You may choose to receive phone or e-mail notification that your reserved materials are ready.
For additional help, ask your local librarian, or call the Merriam Park Library branch of the St. Paul Library. The library is located at 1831 Marshall Avenue.
