Minneapolis Tribune index 1867-1922 online

As of a few days ago, we have suddently acquired access to a ProQuest
online index to the MINNEAPOLIS TRIBUNE for 1867-1922. I asked
Charles S., who said that Proquest suddently turned it on, that we
are not being charged for it, but that it is unclear if we'll continue
to be able to access it. He doesn't where why/where Proquest did this.

It brings up citations (and sometimes abstracts) only -- no full
text, and no pdf page or story images. Still, it's obviously useful.

There is no record in MNCAT or the "Indexes and Databases A to Z"
menu for it. (And if we may not be getting permanent access, that's
as well for now.) The only way to get to it seems to be to go to
any of the other Proquest newspaper databases, such as the CHICAGO
TRIBUNE or NEW YORK TIMES historical files, click on the "select
mulitple databases" link, go down to the "Historical Databases"
list at the bottom of the screen, check the MINNEAPOLIS TRIBUNE
"on" (and then check "off" whatever other paper you entered to get
to the list, unless you do want to search it in conjunction with
the TRIBUNE).

"pig's eye" brings up 31 documents
"little big horn" brings up 53
chippewa brings up 2303
duluth brings up 58,084 etc.

Lexis/Nexis Interface Changes

Lexis/Nexis Academic and related databases are back up, with their new search interface which to me looks a lot nastier than the old one. The business databases also are apparently now "folded in" to the Academic side. Most pressing problem (which I just reported to AskUs) is that the STAR TRIBUNE via LEXIS NEXIS link on the "Indexes and Databases A to Z" page no longer points to a STRIB-specific search page. / Denny

Star Tribune stories not getting added promptly to databases

Just tried to find a letter published in the STAR TRIBUNE a couple of days ago. I believe LEXIS/NEXIS at least used to get STRIB text into the database in one to two days, but this time I couldn't find anything newer than five days old (May 16th; today is May 21st). Same with PROQUEST NEWSTAND. When I went to the STAR TRIBUNE's own site, I discovered a search in their own archives also turned up nothing after May 16th, so probably L/Ni's slowness to update can be blamed on the STRIB itself. Don't know if the upheavals and layoffs are to blame or what...

St Paul Pioneer Press -- Problems with Our Subscription, Follow-up report

I am updating you that Wilson Periodicals is now receiving the St. Paul Pioneer Press, after having problems with receipt of this title since late October. We will not be receiving back issues, so there is still a gap from October 21 to November 17. However, this gap will be eliminated when the microfilm for this time period is received.

St Paul Pioneer Press --- problems with our subscription

http://blog.lib.umn.edu/wilsper/informationcentral/2006/11/st_paul_pioneer_press.html

St. Paul Pioneer Press

We have not received the St. Paul Pioneer Press since October 21, 2006.

We are having problems with the vendor who has normally sends us this newspaper. Until this problem is resolved, issues since October 21to the present are not available to Library users.

What if someone needs the St. Paul Pioneer Press?
1) Online database. Users can access this newspaper electronically through an online database. It is updated weekly so may not have the past few issues. Search for "St. Paul Pioneer Press" in MNCat Journals Catalog or e-Journals to access it electronically.
2) Pioneer Press website. Go to twincities.com (the St. Paul Pioneer Press website) to access the paper. This does include today's and the most recent issues. After viewing a few articles, users are prompted to "become a member," which is free.
3) Paper copies at Magrath. Magrath Library (St. Paul Campus) is currently receiving this paper, and they keep the paper copy for the last four weeks. However, they have recently had problems with issues going missing or being vandalized, so call ahead(4-2233) to make sure what the patron needs is actually there.

NOTE: The Journalism Library has not received the St. Paul Pioneer Press since October 20. MNCat says that Journalism Library has the paper for the last 10 days, but this is not true at this time. Do not send patrons to the Journalism Library to get this paper.

Old Winona newspapers free online

The Winona Newspaper Project
There's now a searchable archive for three old newspapers of Winona, Minnesota. The newspapers, available at http://www.winona.edu/library/databases/winonanewspaperproject.htm , include the Winona Argus, the Winona Daily Republican and the Winona Republican Herald. The newspapers span 125,000 pages but it's hard to tell from the overview page if the archive is actually complete.

The papers may be browsed or searched. The software for reviewing the archive prefers Internet Explorer but seems to work fine with Firefox. I searched all publications for the word mining and got over 3900 results. Results include date, number of words in the article, and the location of the article in the paper.

Click on the headline and the article itself will pop up in a new window. Despite warnings about the paper quality, I found all the articles I looked at very easy to read.
