For many books, Ref and circulating, on the topic, see Nancy Herther's Folklore and Mythology page. This page is linked from her Anthology Resources page, along with many other helpful topical guides.
All of my guides are linked from the subject pages (American Studies, Anthropology, Asian American Studies & Sociology). Since I only do guides at the request of instructors or faculty, I link them to my departmental pages - copying them to my other departments as I see potential value to the other disciplines. So all of my guides are linked from: http://www.lib.umn.edu/libdata/page.phtml?page_id=1297. Look under the name of each department in the SS list. Individual guides are linked by faculty (at their discretion) to class pages, etc. --nh

I noticed today the Oxford English Dictionary lists acronyms/abbreviations in the singe letter entry for each letter of the alphabet. This might be handy as an alternative online place to check if Google and print sources aren't helpful or handy. Seems to have, not surprisingly, a Brit orientation, but includes broader listings.
http://www.lib.umn.edu/cgi-bin/oed.cgi/
Other longer (and free!) listings that came up from a Google search of "acronyms" include:
http://www.acronymfinder.com/
http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/
http://www.libraryspot.com/acronyms.htm
The abbreviations section appears near the end of the entry. See partial entry below:
[note: this section appears near the end of the entry]

I have found a cool web site for movie reviews call the Movie Review Query
Engine (www.mrqe.com).
See below for Denny's and Gwen's remarks:
**************
Denny here:
Seems to work fine and is easy to search -- I checked for reviews for a nine-year-old
semi-obscure favorite movie of mine, THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD, and instantly got almost
forty reviews, only one from a source (NEW YORK TIMES) that asked for registration.
I spot checked a dozen or so of the hits, and all came up quickly with full-text
reviews. Many but not all are from small papers etc. but all seem to be legitimate
(e.g. not random individual bloggers pontificating).
TITANIC brings up 223 reviews. Each HARRY POTTER brings up from 270 to 311 hits.
SIDEWAYS brings up 240. I'd thus guess that they're pulling things from about
300 to 350 sources. For SIDEWAYS, there were six with "registration required"
and, interestingly, about twenty from non-English-language sources (all grouped
at the end).
Older movies like BIRTH OF A NATION or various Marx Bros films show five to thirty
hits when I tried. I assume these are relatively recent reviews; I didn't find
anything that indicated the publication date coverage of the database.
See also their statistics summary at
http://www.mrqe.com/lookup?file=db-stats
The database was last rebuilt:
Thu Jun 2 8:39:45 GMT 2005
The database is comprised of:
457121 articles of 46580 different titles, plus 58607 title aliases.

The Movie Review Query Engine is linked from the Research QuickStart Film
Studies page under Internet Resources. It is also linked from the Film
Studies page http://research.lib.umn.edu/page.phtml?page_id=1392#toc45210
under Internet Resources, Other Helpful Sites, at the bottom of the page.

The Minnesota Statewide RBA (Rare Bird Alert) by the MOU (MN Ornithologists Union) is brought to us from the U's College of Biological Sciences. You can check this page for reports of those great Great Gray Owls and other feathered friends (not to mention those three-toed woodpeckers). Thanks, Mary Pat, for the tip. We had a patron in the other day complaining that he couldn't find info on where the owls were being seen. This is the place. --sg
Patron called asking us to check for a "book" called the Calder Raisonne. The closest thing to it is the Calder Web site, which includes an online catalogue raisonne at:
http://www.calder.org click on Calder Foundation
at Calder Foundation pop-up, click on Catalogue Raisonne.
He may need additional assistance if he comes in to use this (his computer doesn't work), but since it's not a direct link I thought this path info may be helpful if he comes in asking about it. --sg
Excerpt:
"Since 1987 the Calder Foundation has documented more than 17,000 works made by Alexander Calder for publication in a catalogue raisonné. The catalogue raisonné seeks to be comprehensive in recording every work of art created by Calder: from monumental sculptures, mobiles, and stabiles to paintings, drawings, and lesser known work, such as jewelry and household objects."
Here's a great Web site for anyone seeking grammar or essay writing help via the Web:
http://www2.actden.com/writ_den/tips/contents.htm
If you click the cute little "Off" button on the graphic, it will bring up the Writing Den's full menu of options including a Word of the Day, Teacher's Guide and Other Topics.

We are beginning to see due dates show up in the availability part of MNCAT records that say "effective due date xx/xx/xx"
Circulation tells us that this means that the book has been recalled. It may have been recalled for a specific patron or to go on reserve, etc.
Gwen
Just so you know, we will receive the Duelfer Report in paper as well as the electronic form, which is up already but not in MNCAT until the next monthly Marcive load. But note particularly that we will get "chronologies in the form of six-foot fold-outs." What in the world will we do with those?? Clarice can let us know when they are processed, and we can see if anyone thinks they deserve display space somewhere...

Subject: Fwd: New Library FAQ Record Created
As discussed at the meeting on Friday - I created an FAQ to point to the list of tests (located in the Annex) added to PageScribe.
Take a peek and send suggestions to Kate.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can view this record online at: http://faq.lib.umn.edu/admin/showRecord.pl?kbrecordid=5181
QUESTION:
What is the Test Collection in the Wilson Library Annex?
ANSWER:
It is a collection of 1200 psychological and educational inventories housed in the Wilson Library Annex. This is primarily an archival collection since new inventories are not currently being purchased.
Access to this collection is restricted given test security requirements. Students must present a current student ID or other photo identification along with a signed, dated note from a faculty member accepting responsibility for test security. The test collection is not open to the general public and tests may not be copied or circulated.
