U of M Networking and Telecommunications Services (NTS) is in the process of replacing wireless access points in West Bank buildings. The new equipment supports newer, faster networking standards. Service should be interrupted only while each particular access point is being replaced. However, laptop computers may need user intervention when connecting to the new wireless network for the first time.
Right-click on the Windows system tray's wireless icon, then choose "View Available Wireless Networks." The new network is called "UofM," which is a change from the old network's name, "UofM Wireless."
There will also be two other options called "UofM Secure" and UofM Guest." Support for these options will be phased in later.
If you need assistance, please bring your laptop to 453 Wilson. Non-library-staff users who need assistance with the wireless transition should be referred to the ADCS help lines in Blegen Hall, 1-HELP, or http://www.umn.edu/wireless/.
For items that are not on the shelves, IADS is asking service points to encourage users to submit a Get It request for materials that are eligible for paging through that service. While the blue search forms will continue to be available, funneling eligible requests through the Get It process streamlines the work and adds a level of improved service for our users. Regardless of the form of submission, all requests will be part of the process and routine for searching and notifying users of availability. For items to be searched using the Get It option either the Library staff can place the Get It request for the user (see https://wiki.lib.umn.edu/Circulation/RequestingMaterial for procedures), or the user may log into their account and place the request themselves.
This procedure is being implemented in the Bio-Medical, Magrath, Walter and Wilson Libraries service points beginning the week of November 3. We would also like to invite all library locations to consider using this expanded option to assist their users in locating materials that are not on the shelves.
Questions regarding the Get It service, may be directed to getit@umn.edu or (612) 626-2260.
Thank you.

Hello - Here is a reminder about the new on-line debiting system for printing and copying in the Libraries
Public Copying and Printing
All University Libraries public copying and printing equipment has been upgraded to the new CBORD debiting system.
The Libraries are no longer selling Library Copy Cards. Faculty and staff who need to purchase a copy card with an EFS budget string should request a card through their departmental accounting office.
The copy service has purchased a limited number of $3 courtesy cards and distributed them to public service desks to help faculty and staff with this transition..
Patrons should be directed to the new Value Port to add money to their UCard account or to purchase a new Gopher Gold card for $1 and then add value to that. Value Ports are located in Wilson, Walter, Magrath, Law and HSL. They are also located in the University dormitories.
If University faculty, staff or students have value stored on their UCard that was deposited via the cash to card machines prior to Aug. 15th that value must be converted to the new system at the UCard office in Coffman.
Old Library Copy Cards (non-CUFS purchased with cash or a check) or Gopher Gold cards purchased in the cash to cards machines will no longer work in the equipment and must be converted at the UCard Office in Coffman to the new system.
Copy Cards with CUFS printed on them should be returned to their departmental accounting office for a refund. **Exception: Library units that have old CUFS copy cards should return them to Amy Boemer 125 Magrath with their name and unit.
The UCard office anticipates that the web interface for adding value with a credit or debit card will be available to the public October 1st. There will be a $2 fee for this service.

The new Walter SMART Learning Commons is open.

Visitors from Walden University Summer Residency Program
Walden University Summer Residency Program will again be on campus this year from July 13 through 27. During this two weeks, approximately 1500 advanced degree students and numerous faculty may be using the Libraries.
While students are being directed to Wilson Library, other campus libraries may see increased use. The Wilson Reference desk will increase staffing during this two week period to accommodate increased need.
Walden students will each receive individual conference accounts for on campus internet access. This should provide access to the Libraries public workstations as well as the U of M wireless network, providing students with access to our databases. The Walden students are being asked to use their own computers when using library resources to limit the impact on access to workstations in Wilson Library.
Walden students will also receive a gopher gold type card to which value may be added for copying and printing services. These cards will only work when value is added using the Cash-to-Card machine in the library. This new system should alleviate copy and printing problems experienced last year.
Please let me know if you have questions about the Walden visit.

Beginning March 25, the SMART Learning Commons will accept appointments for students to meet with Peer Learning Consultants in addition to walk-in services. This new service is being added in order to allow students to have guaranteed access to a consultant at a time convenient to them, and to better utilize low traffic hours. I can never find link to photocpy prices, or even photocopy "home page" when I need it, so:
It's from Wilson Library home page, under "Copy Service" on "Building information" list: / Denny
Wilson Copy Services
Regular black and white photocopying. Bring us pretty much anything and we'll try our best to make a copy for you (as long as it doesn't violate copyright). Our charges are 20¢ per exposure.
Color copying. Our color copying machine will make 8-1/2 x 11 or 11 x 17 color copies (again, we can't violate copyright, but we'll try our best to copy what we can).
Prices are $1.00 per exposure
(11 x 17 copies are $2.00 each).
Microform copying. We can make hard copy printouts (8-1/2 x 11) of either microfiche or microfilm. Just be aware that these requests can take a little more time than regular photocopies. 30¢ per page.
Transparencies. We will make transparency copies of any hard copy you bring us (sorry, no digital files though). Because our copiers are quite particular, we use our own transparency paper, so don't worry about bringing your own.
50¢ per copy.
Sheet-fed copies. Do you have a stack of clean loose pages that we can just drop into our sheet-feeder to copy? That's so easy; we'll charge you only 10¢ per exposure. Our machines can also sort, stack and staple at no additional charge (but you do have to ask first).

Hi everyone, We have been working for several months to set up online access to Libraries' databases for members of the Board of Regents. Jim S has done much of this work and deserves great credit. We are now ready to launch this service, and a letter will go to the Regents in the next couple of weeks. Please take a look at the web page that has been created for them: http://www.lib.umn.edu/page.phtml?page_id=2376 I call your attention to this because, as you will notice, the page includes instructions on how Regents can obtain assistance. The Reference Desk in Wilson and the InfoPoint services are the primary contact points.
Laurel has agreed to be the named contact for more in-depth help. If a Regent has a question that needs subject expertise other than higher ed or psychology, Laurel will refer the question to one of you -- as might InfoPoint staff if they aren't able to answer.
So -- know your Regents! We provide high quality service to all clients, but it won't hurt for us to be aware of when we're working with Regents. This is a great chance to showcase our collections and services for this important clientele.

Get It: One-Stop Shopping for Book Requesting & Delivery
Starting March 3, 2008, requesting a book from a Twin Cities campus library will be a one-stop process for University of Minnesota faculty, staff and students. The “Get It link in the availability page of the MNCat library catalog consolidates book requesting services currently found in 4 places:
* Recall –changing the due date of a book that has already been checked out for earlier pickup at any convenient campus library
* Point-to-Point - for delivery of books not checked out, to be picked up at a more convenient campus library than the owning library
* Libraries to U – for delivery of books to on-campus faculty/staff offices
* MLAC Paging - for MLAC deliveries
An additional service is now being offered with the “Get It link:
* Paging – pulling books from the shelves of a library to be held for users at the Circulation Desk of that same library
Get It will also provide an additional route for users to request In Process and On Order items. These requests will be directed to Technical Services for processing.
Users will no longer have to fill out web forms, but will have user and book information pre-populated when they initiate a request after logging into their account. All the user will have to do is make a menu choice indicating where they would like the book to be sent for pickup! This will include an on-campus office for UM faculty and staff. Once a book is either returned or found on the shelf, shipping will take place within 48 hours on weekdays; most requests shipped within 24 hours.

this is an earlier note from MS that I'm just getting entered in the blog. SG
Last year a sorority left a study binder in the Commons for members to use. They asked that it be placed in reference, but we determined that the commons was open longer which was better. A similar binder was also placed in other campus libraries - usually with the Circ/Ref desks.
This year we in reference never received nor were contacted about placing a binder here, although we have had a number of sorority members ask about it.
--MS
PS from SG: I referred the person who asked about this last month, and they went to the IC and didn't return, but I saw them with a folder or binder, so presumably the IC has this item again.
The Office of Human Resources would like to announce a new service for University Employees. We have partnered with Hennepin County to provide our employees an on site (East Bank) access to the Hennepin County Service Centers, where employees can purchase motor vehicle tabs, license plates, hunting and fishing licenses, and more.
Because this is a satellite operation, the service center does not accept cash. Fees must be paid by check or credit card.
Please see the announcement below which lists the current hours of 11 am to 1:30 pm on Mondays at the ground floor reception area of Morrill Hall. We will monitor the volume of customers and interest in this new service to determine if additional times to access the Service Centers would be desirable.
- Passports*
- Driver's license duplicates**
- Minnesota state ID duplicates**
- Motor vehicle tabs, plates, titles and registration
- Birth and death certificates
- Marriage licenses and certificates
- Watercraft, snowmobile and ATV registrations
- Hunting and fishing licenses
- Notary commission filings

Faculty may request to have videos delivered to libraries other than Walter to pick up (i.e, Wilson, Magrath, or Bio-Med), but we do not deliver to offices. The videos are held at the main circulation point in each library. Videos may be checked out by instructors for 2-5 days if they wish to use it for viewing in class, or to preview for classroom showing. Instructors may request videos using our on-line "classroom advance reservation request" form found on our web page at: http://lrc.lib.umn.edu/

Trying to figure out how to do an ILL from Worldcat now that we have ILLiad?
YOu won't see the familiar ILL button at the top of the record. Instead:
Look at the long record in WCAT. SCroll doewn to the record field called "External Resources: Interlibrary Loan/ILLiad". From there the patron must logon (after having setup an ID and password with ILL, of course).
Exceprt from Cherie's e-mail: "The link in WorldCat to submit ILL requests has also changed. To request an ILL, please click the External Resource link, ILL/ILLiad which can be found within the GET THIS ITEM section. Once you click this link, the ILLiad login window will pop up. If you haven't already registered, you can do so at this point. Once you've logged in, you can edit your preferences and then enter the request by clicking the submit button." cw

Hi everyone,
I just want to give you a heads up that the Writing Center tutors will be starting their fall hours next Monday, 13 September. Their hours this fall are 2-5 pm M-Th. Until the Information Commons opens in October, they will be sitting in the same place by the reference area that they did last year. They will then move to the IC when it opens. Let me know if you have any questions about this!
Thanks,
Caroline

Copy Price Increases
After investigating other institutions mediated copy services, and our recent negotiations with Metro Sales, it was decided to increase prices for both mediated copying and the public self-service copiers within the Libraries
Starting September 1, 2004 the cost of a copy made by using your Ucard, Gopher Gold or Library Copy card in the Libraries self-service copy machines will increase from .12 cents to .15 cents per copy. The cost of copies paid in coin will increase from .15 cents to .20 cents per copy. Printing will remain the same at .10 cents per page. Metro Sales will be posting signs with the price changes.
The mediated copying being done at the three Library Copy Services will also be increasing. The cost of sheet-fed material will raise from .05 cents to .10 cents per page and book copying or hand-placed will raise from .15 cents to .20 cents per page.
For your information-
The photocopy price increase only affects the Copy Services in Wilson, Walter and Magrath Libraries and all self-service public copiers except for the copiers located in the Biomedical Library.

Hi, reffers, FYI,
Q. How can I view and copy microcards?
A. There is a microcard viewer in the Periodicals Room (Basement) of Wilson
Library.
To print from microcards, you can take the microcard(s) to the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department on the first floor of Wilson Library. ILL will send the item(s)to the University of Missouri at Columbia to be copied. The cost is a $5.00 handling fee, plus .25 per page.
If you have more questions about copying from microcards, you may call ILL
at 612/624-1806, or email them at: wilsill@tc.umn.edu.
