By Popular Demand: Call Number Searching in MNCAT Plus
We are pleased to announce that it is now possible to search for call numbers in MNCAT Plus. You can search for either a single complete call number or for all titles with the same classification number or part of a classification number. Since call number searching isn't as simple as other types of searching, we encourage you to review the searching hints and examples at: https://netfiles.umn.edu/ul/Divisions/InfoTech/LibEntOps/Primo/HowTo/Call%20Number%20Searches.pdf . This document is intended for staff. We'd appreciate any suggestions for clarification. We'd also like to produce a more succinct version for users to include in the MNCAT Plus help. Volunteers for this writing task are welcome.

As of a few days ago, we have suddently acquired access to a ProQuest
online index to the MINNEAPOLIS TRIBUNE for 1867-1922. I asked
Charles S., who said that Proquest suddently turned it on, that we
are not being charged for it, but that it is unclear if we'll continue
to be able to access it. He doesn't where why/where Proquest did this.

It brings up citations (and sometimes abstracts) only -- no full
text, and no pdf page or story images. Still, it's obviously useful.

There is no record in MNCAT or the "Indexes and Databases A to Z"
menu for it. (And if we may not be getting permanent access, that's
as well for now.) The only way to get to it seems to be to go to
any of the other Proquest newspaper databases, such as the CHICAGO
TRIBUNE or NEW YORK TIMES historical files, click on the "select
mulitple databases" link, go down to the "Historical Databases"
list at the bottom of the screen, check the MINNEAPOLIS TRIBUNE
"on" (and then check "off" whatever other paper you entered to get
to the list, unless you do want to search it in conjunction with
the TRIBUNE).

"pig's eye" brings up 31 documents
"little big horn" brings up 53
chippewa brings up 2303
duluth brings up 58,084 etc.

UPDATE (12/22/08)! The main SMART Commons page, while it does not display links to the locations, has a link called Contacts, which links to the locations.

As you may recall, we were told a couple of months ago that the FAQ database would be frozen for some time (until a new platform for it became available) and that one would not then be able to update entries, so time pressure was on to get everything up to date.

Since it's been a few months, some things then up to date no longer are -- after getting complaints about a couple of them, I tried to log in to fix them and discovered that there was no problem: I could get in and edit just as before. I'm not sure if the FAQ db never actually was frozen or if it became unfrozen and no one told us, but in any case if you run across entries that need updating (or things for which whole new entries are needed) let me know and I'll handle them.

The two computers on the reference desk have now been set up with a macro** to initiate the new paging system for Wilson Course Reserves and Stack Services. This service is a great opportunity for us, but it can take time to fill in the emails to send out the page. So we now can use the macro to pull up automatically filled in emails. At any time on either of the two main computers, hold down SHIFT and CTRL and then press whichever floor you would like to send the patron to so they can receive help finding materials from CRSS. The four macros are:

CTRL+SHIFT+2
CTRL+SHIFT+3
CTRL+SHIFT+4

These will result in Thunderbird (the email client) being pulled up, creating a new mail, and then filling in all of the needed fields. All you have to do is click the send button. Thunderbird does not need to be open before you do this. It also does not matter if Thunderbird IS already open. We still will need to wait for CRSS to call us so we can be sure that there is someone on that floor waiting to help the patron.

Hopefully this will help us to start using this great service.

U of M Networking and Telecommunications Services (NTS) is in the process of replacing wireless access points in West Bank buildings. The new equipment supports newer, faster networking standards. Service should be interrupted only while each particular access point is being replaced. However, laptop computers may need user intervention when connecting to the new wireless network for the first time.

Right-click on the Windows system tray's wireless icon, then choose "View Available Wireless Networks." The new network is called "UofM," which is a change from the old network's name, "UofM Wireless."

There will also be two other options called "UofM Secure" and UofM Guest." Support for these options will be phased in later.

If you need assistance, please bring your laptop to 453 Wilson. Non-library-staff users who need assistance with the wireless transition should be referred to the ADCS help lines in Blegen Hall, 1-HELP, or http://www.umn.edu/wireless/.

Grump of the day/week/season...

(1) Has anyone heard anything about if the now-defunct old U card machines are ever going to be, like, removed from the walls?

(2) Even if they are permanent parts of the landscape and will never be removed, who can we ask about getting a better sign on the first floor one? The sign now informs people in BIG LETTERS that the machine is no longer working, but only tells people about the machine in the basement that they should be using instead further down in smaller and much lighter typeface. I know I get people every couple of days who read the first part and not the second and come to the reference desk asking pathetically how they can put value on their cards if "the" machine no longer operates.

RefWorks has recently been experiencing some technical outages due to hardware upgrades as well as hosting service maintenance. It was not our intention to interrupt service however, it appears that there were some difficulties getting the new hardware on line.

If you have users that are still experiencing issues logging into RefWorks, please first consider restarting your computer to refresh network settings and clear active internet files. If rebooting does not resolve the login problem, please report any outstanding issues to support@refworks.com.

While we do not anticipate any further interruptions in service at this time, we do appreciate your support and understanding during this period.
