Over the last ten years, there has been a large increase in the need for counseling among college students across the nation. This has been researched and it is believed that the pressures of this modern, fast paced society are the cause. In years past, college wasn't as necessary as it is today. There were still pressures on the students who went to college, but people didn't feel as though their life depended on how well they did in college. Now days if you don't do well in college and find a good job, you will not only be stuck working a low income job, but you'll also have to spend the rest of your life paying off student loans. There is just so much pressure that counseling has become a necessity. It is a real shame that our society has come to this point, but it is that cross that we all must bear nonetheless. We all have to take good care of ourselves and try not to bottle things up. Letting things bottle up causes nothing problems down the line and they will only grew in severity the longer they are left unattended. Stay positive and stay healthy people.

That is an interesting way to look at it. To be completely honest, I hadn't really put much thought into the matter. I didn't even realize we had counselors at school besides advisors. I wonder what other issues besides the stress from school cause students to feel the need to see a counselor. Perhaps maybe more relationship problems or a rise in drinking/drug use...
I also think it's important to shine light on this issue. I agree that a college degree is much more necessary today than it was twenty years ago, or even ten years ago. There are new issue with technology, privacy, ethics, etc. that also didn't exist before the early 2000's.
That is an interesting view on the topic. Its interesting to think about it from that perspective and I agree that college is becoming more and more imporant and counselors can help out a lot
I like the picture you opened this entry with. I think it's interesting how impersonal society has gotten - we communicate primarily sitting behind a computer, or with our thumbs on a tiny phone screen. Despite our best efforts, people can't function without face-to-face interaction; it's just not healthy. I feel like we forget that a lot, and it would definitely help relieve some stress!
I agree with you so, so much! It seems like the older our society gets, the harder everything becomes. I remember my grandparents telling me that they did not have to take out student loans because tuition was so cheap back in the day. But since our economy blows, school is a necessity. It seems like our society is somewhat forcing us to grow up quicker. It is a real pity, but, like you said, we all have to deal with it (unfortunately). Great post!
I think that college is necessary for technical degrees, but not so much for liberal arts degrees. It's a huge financial drain and overall, one doesn't actually make that much more with a lib. arts degree than no degree at all.
With the pressures students are under today in trying in to do well in an environment where there may not be jobs when they graduate, there is increased pressure to succeed. Unfortunately thats the reality. Students have to make good financial decisions when choosing their field of study and research to insure that its a field where the projections are good for jobs in that field. They also have to manage their student loans because if you aren't careful you can just become burried in debt that you cannot afford at graduation.
Not only is there pressure to go to college and succeed in college, a growing abundance of college graduates will also lead to increased pressure in the work field. People uphold this image that all college graduates are successful and can get a high paying job right out of school. But reality just means more competition for better paying jobs with a diploma, which then pushes people back into graduate school, accumulating more debt and stress. Gah! It's just one big cycle! Your point about how we have to deal with it all is great. I guess if we're continuously trapped in the cycle to succeed, we might as well go through it with a positive outlook on life.
