12-year-old boy saves sisters from father

A 12-year-old boy died last Wednesday after attempting to wrestle a knife from his father who was repeatedly stabbing his wife and two daughters. Ismael Bugarin had shot and stabbed his wife Teresa to death after she decided she wanted a divorce and was going to leave with the children - the boy, Nick, and two girls, Jasmine, 8, and Sabrina, 6.

The Star Tribune reports that Bugarin, age 33, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. They explain that the family returned from an outing around 6:30 p.m. and after Teresa and Ismael began arguing, he pinned her to the ground and shot her. The bullet hit her wrist and partially severed her spinal column after going through her neck.

The Pioneer Press reported that after the children saw their mother being killed, they tried to flee. Ismael stabbed his son in the neck and his other daughter under the chin. Throughout the process he kept repeating that he was sorry. Nick took the knife from his father and stabbed him twice in the back while his sister’s ran to the neighbor’s house for help.

15-year-old shot outside classroom in high school

A 15-year-old girl was shot outside of a classroom last Wednesday. Amanda Collette was pronounced dead at Broward General Medical Center.

The suspected shooter, according to CBS News, was 15-year-old Teah Wimberly. Both girls attended Dillard High School in Ft. Lauderdale. They reported that the police received a phone call from Wimberly at a nearby restaurant admitting that she had killed her friend. Additionally, a small caliber handgun was retrieved.

Both CBS News and the Washington Times reported that the motive is still being investigated, but investigators believe it was an isolated argument and no other students were in danger. CBS News also said that students at Dillard High School explained that the shooting was only because Amanda did not want to date Teah.

Kidnapping victim found in relative's home

A nine-year-old girl was drugged and locked in an apartment for 24 days as a part of a kidnapping plot. CNN news reports the plot was carried out by her mother in order to claim up to $75,000 in reward money. ABC news reports that she was found alive on Friday, hidden in the home of a family relative.

The girl, Shannon Matthews, went missing in February, and now her mother Karen Matthews, 33, and Michael Donovan, 40, are on trial over her disappearance. CNN reports that both deny charges of kidnap, false imprisonment, and perverting the course of justice.

ABC
News reported that Donovan had adbducted Shannon on her way home from school in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. He gave her Temazepam, a sleeping pill, and kept her tied to a strap attached to a roof beam.

After a newspaper reward fund grew to over $50,000, the mother planned to release her daughter and “find” her to claim the reward money.

Marine Sergeant murdered

Sgt. Jan Pawel Pietrzak, along with his wife, was killed with a shot to the back of his head on Oct. 15. ABC News says that court reports point to one shooter, but four Marines have been charged in the double homicide, two of which were under Pietrzak's command.

ABC News also reported that a robbery was the motive behind the crime. CNN News reported that some of Pietrzak's possessions were found in the homes of the charged marines.

ABC News reported that all four said that Pietrzak's wife was sexually assaulted, but each said that the other three were the ones to do it. A fire was set in their home to destroy the evidence. All suspects have pleaded not guilty and are being held without bail.

St. Paul jury to weigh sex abuse case

The Ramsey County District Court jury began deliberating on a sexual abuse case at a day care business. Gene Hegerman, 54, of St. Paul has been accused of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl at his wife's day care run at their home.

Hegerman was retired from the national postal service and began taking a more active role in his wife's day care business when she became ill. According to the Pioneer Press, the business was shut down after an alleged spanking incident was brought up. When a social worker came to talk with one of the other children that went to the day care at her home, she spontaneously mentioned that Hegerman had touched her private parts.

The Star Tribune reported that Hegerman had the children call him "Grandpa Gene" and asked her if she would be his girlfriend. Hegerman was originally charged with first and second degree criminal sexual conduct with other victims, but both cases were dismissed.

School Collapses in Haiti

A school building outside of Haiti's capitol in Petionville has collapsed with students inside according to Yahoo! News. Bystanders are currently removing the rubble to free the victims trapped beneath. Yahoo! News had no information regarding the numbers of deaths and casualties, but CNN News reported that so far at least two are dead and 20 others injured.

Haitian Red Cross and the United Nations peacekeepers are on the scene helping rescue efforts. CNN News reported that Michaele Gédéon, president of Haiti's Red Cross, said the building was a small school, but they were unsure how many people were inside the building at the time

Chinese hostages found dead in Sudan

After a surveillance plane caused panic among Sudan kidnappers, they killed three hostages last Tuesday. According to the Star Tribune, the Sudanese government said five had been killed, but only three were confirmed dead and three others were injured. Three more are still missing.

Yahoo! News said that a fourth hostage was confirmed dead, after they found the body in the same part of South Kordofan as the other hostages. Yahoo News also reported that the kidnappers spotted a helicopter which caused them to panic and begin shooting. The Star Tribune says these deaths were the most voilent acts China has faced in years.

Boy accidentally killed himself firing a gun

Last Tuesday, a prosecutor said he will be investigating whether or not criminal charges should be filed in the death of an 8-year-old boy. KSTP News says that Christopher Bizilj shot himself in the head when firing an Uzi submachine gun as it recoiled.

Bizilj was at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club. Though the police say it was an accident, as the boy was trying to shoot a pumpkin, they are questioning whether it was reckless to let an 8-year-old posses a machine gun.

CNN reports that the club is meant to be "legal and fun". They could not be reached for comment, but the club describes itself as an organization that promotes "the interest of legal sport with rod, gun, and bow and arrow."

Man awaits charges in triple slaying

A man is being held in the Ramsey County Jail awaiting charges for killing his girlfriend, her mother, and her sister. The Star Tribune said that Johnny Lee Ellis Jr. had stabbed his girlfriend to death, while the Pioneer Press said there was no release as to how he committed the murder.

According to the Star Tribune, Ellis stabbed his girlfriend Angie during an argument. Ellis said he could not leave a witness behind, so he murdered his girlfriend's mother and mentally handicapped sister as well.

The Pioneer Press gave an account of a friend of Ellis, who was telling him to go home to Mounds View after Ellis claimed he was suicidal. He did not know at the time that Ellis had committed the three murders days prior to that. Police said the victims had been dead for a while before they were finally found.

Political Figures Homes Defaced

Six homes of Minnesota members of Congress were defaced last Tuesday night with spray-painting graffiti. The Star Tribune said the messages of graffiti called for the political figures to resign and included biblical references to Psalm 2.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Kim Ellison, wife of U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison both found their homes in Minneapolis painted with messages for resignation. Lauri Coleman, wife of U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman found the words "U R A CRIMINAL RESIGN OR ELSE! PASLM 2" scrawled across her garage.

The Pioneer Press reported that it was unsure whether the defacing occurred late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. They also reported that the homes of representatives in outstate Minnesota were not vandalized.

Capitol Police in Washington are assisting in the investigation of the attacks and this incident is being looked at as a threat.

Man held on $10K Bail for Nevada Abduction

Prosecutors are considering filing a weapons charge for a man held in the investigation of a 6-year-old boy's abduction. According to ABC News, Jose Lopez-Buelna was a convicted drug trafficker and arrested during the investigation of Cole Puffinburger's abduction. The boy was found unharmed last Saturday night.

Puffinberger was abducted from his mother's home on Oct. 8 by two men that posed as police officers. Police have named no suspects in the kidnapping, and have labeled Lopez-Buelna as a 'person of interest'.

CNN News says that Puffinburger was taken from his home on Oct. 15 in Las Vegas. They reported that two armed suspects entered the home and tied up his mother and her fiance. They ransacked he home and left with Puffinburger after finding no money.

Dubai Radio Personality Fired for Impersonating God

The Arabian Radio Network let radio personality Revin John go after he enacted a conversation with God on the air last Monday. FOX News says John pretended to act out a telephone conversation, but intended to be funny and not offensive.

FOX News also reported that John was allowed on the air the next day to make an apology, then dismissed from the radio. John worked for Virgin Radio Dubai. MSNBC reported that one college student was so offended by John's remarks that she formed a Facebook group to protest the incident that had occurred.

Unlike FOX News, MSNBC said that John was fired from his morning drive-time talk show because he mocked religion and impersonated God on the air. According to the broadcasting company, many listeners had called in with complaints about the incident.

al Qaeda chief killed in Iraq

The U.S. military said that their coalition forces killed al Qaeda senior leader in northern Iraq. Abu Qaswarah was killed during an operation in Mosul on Oct. 5 according to CNN news.

Qaswarah was second-in-command and was the target of a military raid. He was tracked down in a key control location for al Qaeda in Iraq.

According to Yahoo news, the announcement of his death was withheld until Wednesday to ensure that he was positively identified.

The military said that this death "will significantly degrade AQI operations in Mosul and northern Iraq, leaving the network without a leader to oversee and coordinate its operations in the region."

Mom charged with murder of her daughter

The mother of a missing toddler has been charged with first degree murder. Casey Anthony, 22, was charged with killing her daughter, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, and providing false information to law enforcement according to ABC news.

Anthony's daughter, Caylee, was reported missing in Orange county, and Anthony told police she had not seen her daughter in 31 days. ABC News said Anthony gave them changing information since then.

FOX news reports that Anthony was trying to blame a babysitter for her daughter that had gone missing. Zenaida Gonzalez said that Anthony gave her information to the police regarding the missing child and she has since lost her job. Gonzalez said she had never even met the family or child until she got a call from investigators about Caylee's disappearance.

Both FOX and ABC news report that police found signs of decomposition in the mother's car, and they did not believe the story she gave them about Gonzalez.

Roosevelt High School senior shot in the heart

An 18-year-old high school senior was shot and killed Saturday around 7 p.m. while leaving a birthday party. FOX news says the victim was found in an alleyway in Minneapolis near 29th Avenue South.

Jesse Mickelson was a senior at Roosevelt High School and was attending his cousin's birthday party nearby. Police said Mickelson was shot after approaching a vehicle that had pulled up near the alley. FOX news reported that his sister Angel saw it happen.

The Star Tribune reports that the car was driving by and fired six to eight shots. His caretaker, Heidi Crandell, ran outside through the party of children when she heard it happen.

Both sources report that there are no suspects as of yet, and the Star Tribune says the shooting may have been intended for neighbors outside next door, and not Mickelson.
