Our assignment for the random access project was to do something that might go on an extras DVD for this Eleusis movie.

When thinking about what we wanted to do, Kelly and I decided that we wanted to try working with video. We watched some movies that might pertain to this specific topic like Best in Show and other Christopher Guest movies to help us decide what type of style we wanted. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001302/ We took some ideas from those movies and related them to this Eleusis Project. We interviewed 5 people that were in three different areas of the movie from costuming, catering, and set design.

I thought that the interviews were really funny and showed our Christopher Guest style. Overall, I thought it was a good project and we had a lot of fun doing it.

My idea for my final project is an experimental digital movie.

My plan is to do a drawing in Photoshop and while I'm drawing, the computer will be hooked up to a projector that will project that image onto a blank canvas. Since this is a one time deal, I will record the process on a videocamera to turn into a quicktime movie to show the class.

With this project, I'm hoping for a playful quality that shows the digital media in a new light.

^ a still frame of the final product ^

After I finished this final project, I knew a lot more about iMovie. I had worked with it on the last project, and decided that I would try to push myself a little bit more with it. I played with the audio editing more than anything else. I really like how this peice turned out. It took a lot of hours but I think it's a pretty unique project.

I actually really liked this project just because it was something new that I learned how to do with the computer. I'm really interesting in the making of animations and this let me make a little one of my own.

The full animation is the start of one solid colored background with things slowly added to make a small movie. I started with a blue background and added different colors to add some diversity. I then added three orchids

Fellow artist, John Maeda, is a daily inspiration to Camille. Both of their works have concepts of reactive graphics, typography, and interactive text. In Camille’s statement, she describes her work as a connection between a physical body and the digital realm. Her work consists of some sort of computer-generated graphics that interacts with the viewer’s physical presence. For example, in her work called Text Rain, the text falls and stops when it hits the shadow of the viewer. By putting a hand out, the audience can stop the text.

Camille’s work has been displayed in numerous galleries, festivals, and museums in many different cities and a few different countries. Her work has been mentioned in various books also including Christiane Paul’s Digital Art. In this book, Paul doesn’t mention much about Camille’s work. The section in which she is mentioned is under the ‘beyond the book: text and narrative environments’ section. This is where Camille’s Text Rain is talked about in detail.

When looking at Camille’s work I was really drawn to her fifth interactive instillation from the External Measures Series. What it looks like is a large computer screen used much like a canvas with expressionist brush strokes. In front of this screen, there’s a square space that tracks the movement on that space and shows it on the screen. So when a person stands on the square, the screen will show these circles. When the viewer moves, the circles move causing the different colored brush strokes, and when the viewer stops moving or leaves the space, the circles try to go back to their original position that causes another colorful picture. I really liked how it was so interactive. Not only does the viewer get to look at the interesting picture, but also they get to take part in how that picture changes.

After looking at Camille’s interactive instillations, it really makes me want to do something like her. I love the idea of taking the physical concept of painting and combining it with digital media. For my final in this 2D class, I’m kind of working of something similar in which the act of my drawing is shown in video. It would be really awesome if I could find out more and try to do something like Camille. Her work is just so interesting to me.

And my idea was confirmed when Joellyn told us that it must have a 9 square grid pattern which made it even easier for me to put different travel pictures in it. I chose the pastel colors becuase I wanted a light and dreamy type appearance. One other thing in my portrait are some sketches of "Mr. Love Puppy", by boyfriends stuffed dog I bought him when I went to Florida for the semester. It's sort of a symbol of our relationship which I felt needed to be in there because that is apart of me and my identity.
