Response to Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol is a true artist because his art is meaningful and boasts his mastering of various artistic techniques. His art cannot be truly appreciated unless the spectator has an understanding of these techniques. I was unaware of the great skill that is present in his art, until it was shown in the documentary. His art is uniquely abstract; for example, in his hammer and sickle pieces he used the shadows of inanimate objects brilliantly. Warhol also used subtlety to emphasize various aspects and because of this technique he was able to produce similar portraits with slight changes. Warhol skillfully used a repetitive pattern in his work. The repetitive nature of Warhol’s work distinguishes him among many other artists and defined much of his work. Warhol also showed his knowledge of the history of art as well as techniques in his work. For example, his praying hands piece depicted a golden hand with crèche, which showed evidence that Warhol was familiar with art from the past. Another thing that is significant about Warhol’s work and that I personally find important was his reflection of himself in his art. Religion was a big part of Warhol’s childhood and life and was the theme of much of his work. Warhol also conveyed his interpretation of current events, at the time, around him in his art. His skulls theme emerged during the escalating threat of nuclear war, rising fear of aids, and spread of punk culture. The skulls theme was also a result of his pervasive fear of death and disaster. This documentary showed that from a big picture perspective being an artist can give the false illusion of looking easy, but in reality is not because an artist must be able to elaborate their feelings in their work. Despite the simplicity in Andy Warhol’s work, his art always seems to convey an underlying message and master various artistic techniques.

what is art

What is Art?
Imaan Ezzat
I think art is a form of expression. It is used to describe a feeling about something or too send a message. I think classifying something as art or not is impossible because in a sense everything is art. I feel as long as the artist can explain his work as being art then it is art. Classifying art as good or not is up to each individual person. Everyone is different, so everyone’s perception on what is good art is also different. Art is not something that is right or wrong like math or chemistry, it is subjective to the viewer. I think an artist should not worry about how other’s see his or her art, but should focus on the message they are trying to portray or feeling they want to depict and hope that people can relate. There isn’t exactly a rubric for classifying art but there are still things that show whether or not an artist has mastered skill of painting, drawing, or filmmaking. It can be seen in the angles of the drawing or the lighting used in the movie. It is easy to classify something as art, but not everyone is a great artist.
“A painter paints the appearance of things, not their objective correctness, in fact he creates new appearances of things.”
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Many people can be painting the same object but the end result for each person is different. It doesn’t mean that one person painted it right and everyone else didn’t but that each person viewed that object differently and that is why their products differ. This is one reason why judging art is hard and why I think art shouldn’t be judged
“Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.”
Andy Warhol
I like this quote because you know you are doing something right when people are responding too your art and you are making money.
“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”
Scott Adams
I think this quote refers to an artist being able to actually see and know what art is and what a mistake is.

Maholy-Nagy Response

Maholy-Nagy Response
I found Maholy-Nagy’s work to be masterfully crafted, but I was not personally attracted to or interested in his style. His artwork seemed to consist of the basic visual fundamentals of color, light and texture. I found his experimentation with light successful and an essential part too many of abstract art pieces. It was interesting how a lot of his pieces varied from shapes, to people, to landscapes and more and he was not afraid to experiment with new objects. Despite this, they all retained the same abstract aspects of light and angles which defined Maholy-Nagy’s work. Maholy-Nagy‘s photographic work was the most inspirational and impressive relative to his other types of artwork. With his lens he tried to capture what the human eye could not see. His photogram work, in which he experimented with laying objects over light sensitive paper while exposing it to light, was also very innovative at the time. His use of shadows to manipulate the objects form and appearance was also intriguing.

August Sanders (Alternative to Chamber Art Museum Response)

August Sanders (Alternative to Chamber Art Museum Response)
The artist I found to be the most intriguing out of the artists discussed is August Sander. Today some people would not view August Sander’s photographs as art because they lack the level of creativity that photographers have reached as time passed. Despite the fact that his photographs were not originally created for artistic reasons I liked his work the most because I he was able to capture a whole generation of people. Sander’s photographed a wide range of people; he photographed the rich, poor, young and old, yet they it was evident that they shared a similar background and came from the same city. Out of all the artist’s I felt Sander’s work had the strongest message and impact. Looking at the people he captured in his photographs I often wondered who they were, how they lived, and what their life was like. I also found it interesting how the people in his photographs rarely smiled. I think that August wanted to capture the real them and making them smile for the camera would be in a way an act. I don’t think August tried to direct the people in his photographs in any way and that is why they appeared more natural than others. I also like how a well-dressed businessman in one photo is contrasted with a hard working farmer in the next photo. Sander’s captured the cultural divide in Germany very well. I found his photos to be both political and artistic.

Walker Art Center Response

Walker Art Center Response
I really enjoyed going to the Walker Art Center. I found it to be unlike any other art museum I have been too. I liked how interactive a lot of the art work was and how the concept of art was left open and not restricted to just paintings and sculptures. One art work I thought was really unique was the man twisting around on the floor in a completely empty white room. This was a new form of art that I was never exposed to before. I also thought it was very different and innovative when a person would break out in song as part of the artwork. It was a creative form of art that combined sound and visual as well as 3D live human interaction. My favorite art innovation was the room with three screens and three bean chairs to sit on. All three screens played something different but each screen played a typical day in a person’s life, portraying normal life events. There was nothing interesting going on in each screen separately but it became interesting when you watched all three screens at once. I also really like the white sculpture of a car that had been in an accident. The sculpture was actually made from a real car that had been in an accident and the sculptor purchased it from a junk yard. I really enjoyed the Walker Art Center it made me realize how anything can be used for your palate.
