Andy Warhol Response - Jackie Jessen

The movie about Andy Warhol that we watched in class was very informational and interesting. I never knew so much about him. Of course I’ve heard of him, but I didn’t know exactly what things he had created. The pictures of Marilyn Monroe and the Campbell’s Soup Labels are the ones I recognized the most. I thought it was interesting that there were so many different versions and colors for each picture. There were about 10 versions of the Marilyn Monroe picture, but they all had different names. But then there were about 10 pictures of a hammer and sickle, and they were all very different, but they were all called ‘Hammer and Sickle’. I really like his artwork because it is so simple, but it still has excitement to it. Some of them, however, are a little bit too simple. For instance, the cross pictures he made did not really impress me. I do like them, but most people can draw a cross. I think that because of his earlier work, Andy could get away with making something simple like that so popular. One thing that struck me when they were telling about his life is that someone once attempted to murder him. A lady came into the factory and shot at him. I don’t really understand why anyone would want to kill him. He hadn’t done any extremely offensive works. It’s weird to think about what art would be like if the murdered had succeeded in the killing. But I like Andy Warhol’s art, so I am very glad he was not killed that day.
