August Sanders (Alternative to Chamber Art Museum Response)
The artist I found to be the most intriguing out of the artists discussed is August Sander. Today some people would not view August Sander’s photographs as art because they lack the level of creativity that photographers have reached as time passed. Despite the fact that his photographs were not originally created for artistic reasons I liked his work the most because I he was able to capture a whole generation of people. Sander’s photographed a wide range of people; he photographed the rich, poor, young and old, yet they it was evident that they shared a similar background and came from the same city. Out of all the artist’s I felt Sander’s work had the strongest message and impact. Looking at the people he captured in his photographs I often wondered who they were, how they lived, and what their life was like. I also found it interesting how the people in his photographs rarely smiled. I think that August wanted to capture the real them and making them smile for the camera would be in a way an act. I don’t think August tried to direct the people in his photographs in any way and that is why they appeared more natural than others. I also like how a well-dressed businessman in one photo is contrasted with a hard working farmer in the next photo. Sander’s captured the cultural divide in Germany very well. I found his photos to be both political and artistic.
