The Walker Art Museum is my new favorite art museum. Most times art museums are fun for about five minutes for me. I liked how this one was so different. I could have been entertained there for hours. There was a mix of pictures, sculptures, videos, and all sorts of things. I loved playing with the thing where the cameras from the ceiling sensed your hands picking up the little people on the screen; it amazed me. I also like the one room where there were videos playing on three of the walls. They switched around from an alcohol bottle production place, a grocery store, a lady walking in the road, and other random things. It didn’t seem to portray a certain story, but it’s weird to think that all these things are happening at once, but you never would see them at the same time. None of the videos themselves would have been interesting, but together it just seemed really neat. There were nice comfy bean bag chairs to sit in to watch, which was extra nice. Then of course there was the big white room with nothing but a man at the other end rolling on the floor. This was one of the first things I saw, and I really didn’t know what to think. At first I thought something was wrong and he needed help, until I realized that he was actually art. It was hard for me to take it seriously at first. It felt awkward to actually walk all the way into the room, so I just kept peeking inside the doorway. But then at the end of the museum experience I returned to the rolling man, walked farther into the room, and just stared for awhile. I think performing art is the best kind of art. It is more memorable and gets people talking more.
The movie about Andy Warhol that we watched in class was very informational and interesting. I never knew so much about him. Of course I’ve heard of him, but I didn’t know exactly what things he had created. The pictures of Marilyn Monroe and the Campbell’s Soup Labels are the ones I recognized the most. I thought it was interesting that there were so many different versions and colors for each picture. There were about 10 versions of the Marilyn Monroe picture, but they all had different names. But then there were about 10 pictures of a hammer and sickle, and they were all very different, but they were all called ‘Hammer and Sickle’. I really like his artwork because it is so simple, but it still has excitement to it. Some of them, however, are a little bit too simple. For instance, the cross pictures he made did not really impress me. I do like them, but most people can draw a cross. I think that because of his earlier work, Andy could get away with making something simple like that so popular. One thing that struck me when they were telling about his life is that someone once attempted to murder him. A lady came into the factory and shot at him. I don’t really understand why anyone would want to kill him. He hadn’t done any extremely offensive works. It’s weird to think about what art would be like if the murdered had succeeded in the killing. But I like Andy Warhol’s art, so I am very glad he was not killed that day.
