The Science of Jazz

Popular Science reported on a new study regarding a study released by Johns Hopkins University. Researchers mapped the brains of a hand full of jazz pianists to see what effects improvising have on the mind. Scientists found that the section of the brain that deals with inhibitions "shut down" while the parts that control expressiveness light up. They had to create a special piano that they could use in an MRI machine. Johns Hopkins also has a longer report available.
