Written Sound

Sometimes it's hard to think of ways to describe sounds when media captioning. You know what it is, but you just can't find a word to get it across. While I think it's probably best to avoid those "Batman" sound descriptors like "bam!" or "zap!" it's nice to have a variety of options to choose from.

I've found the Written Sound website helpful in the past when I'm at a loss for how to explain a sound.

It has lots of options and some are appropriate for our use, some not so much. Although I would find it pretty funny if I open up a transcript to do timecoding and see a something like "dibble dibble dopp dopp". Yes, that one's actually on there.

Does anyone else have resources they use for sound effects?

This is a test of this blog to see what capabilities it has for us here in the ICU captioning unit. Some of the things we might want to use it for would be to comment on best practices, prep strategies, mentoring, professional development, and technology issues.
