An
article
in the New York Times reports that a gene known for the suppression of
tumor development also is responsible for the shutting down of the
ability of stem cells to proliferate. This inhibition of stem cell
function may be responsible for lowering the risk for cancer, but also
may be related to many of the chronic degenerative conditions that are
associated with aging. The finding is reported online by three research
groups as
advance online publications in
Nature.
