Last Week's Definition: Leadership is being a strong and knowledgeable person that has a vision of what they want in their personal life, and a vision of where they are going with their leadership in the future. They demonstrate different styles of leading to compliment the situation they are in, and can respond, not only to emergency situations, but also adapt to the changes that this emergency has caused. Having good leadership is know when your group is in the process of forming, storming, norming, or performing, and having a thorough understanding of your group's structure, time, and purpose. Leaders need to serve their followers and provide them with stability, but in times of doubt persuade them to trust their decisions. Leaders need to not be influenced by outside sources and make the most ethical decisions they can. They need to earn the followers' trust by giving them hope for the future and show them compassion on a personal level without judgement. Leaders need not be afraid to express their needs and hopes to the group to reach their vision. Leaders need to have a thorough understanding of themselves and their beliefs in order to make difficult decisions in the realm of right vs. wrong. Leadership is also being able to step out of one's own shoes and see what is really going on around you, and then changing it for the better.

This Week's Definition: Leadership is being a strong and knowledgeable person that has a vision of where they are going with their group and their leadership in the future. Leadership is being able to demonstrate different styles of leading to compliment the situation they are in. Leadership is being fully aware of everything happening in and around the group. Leadership is also the ability to step out of one's own shoes to see what is going on around, and then going back and changing what you saw for the better. Leadership is being able to serve the followers and have total trust in one another on a personal and professional level without judgement. Leadership is not being influenced by outside sources, and making the most ethical decisions possible. It is not being afraid to speak up, and showing great communication skills. Leadership is showing a good understanding of oneself while being a part of a larger group.

Analysis: This week's leadership definition has changed quite a bit. After getting a chance to take a close look into my definition, I chose to take out and add a few different things to make it more truthful to what I believe to be the definition. Sessions (2010) makes some very good points about online and offline communication, but alot of what the author wrote about did not apply to my definition. I could, though, become more a part of it in the future as technology becomes more and more prominent as a method of communication. Saphiere, Mikk, and Devries (2005) came to accurate conclusions about the complexity of leadership, but I feel that these broaden leadership and do not necessarily define it.

Analysis: Although I understand the points the Boyatizis (2006) article makes are important things to ponder, I do not consider any part of the ready to be essential in my emerging definition of leadership. I understand the idea that people can change intentionally, but I also believe change can effectively be obtained naturally overtime. After experiencing certain things in life, one does not feel any different but are indeed changed by those experiences. I admire people who can perform change because they feel it is necessary, but I also believe that there is change that can be obtained without conscious knowledge of its existence. This is why I do not feel it is entirely necessary for my definition.

Analysis: There were many valuable points that were made in the Komives, Lucas, and McMahon (1998) reading. The sentence I added this week was, "Having good leadership is knowing when your group is in the process of forming, storming, norming, or performing, and having a thorough understanding of your group's structure, timing and purpose." Knowing what the leader's role is in the structure, timing, and purpose of the group is very important to understand in order to be successful. Understanding when the group is in the process of storming, norming, performing, and forming is also important to be aware of so that you know how to help the group in the best way possible

Analysis: I chose to add, "without judgement" when referring to showing one's followers compassion and getting to know them on a personal level. Due to the Tatum (1997) and Gladwell (2005) readings, I decided to add this short piece into the definition because it is important to be impartial toward people and not pass judgement too quickly. Although the Kezar (2000) reading seemed interesting, I did not find any particular component that needed to be added to my definition of leadership. I was intrigued by the explanations of how women and men are different and leadership research in that reading though.

Leadership is being able to step out of one's own shoes and see how he or she is affecting their surroundings, and being able to changing these effects for the better.

Analysis: This week I decided to add a another sentence to the end of the definition which reads, " Leadership is being able to step out of one's own shoes and see how he or she is affecting their surroundings, and being able to changing these effects for the better." I believe that this is very important in a leadership style and is not something I necessarily realized until reading the Heifetz and Linsky (2002) article. It is very important that leaders not be oblivious of their surroundings and how they are affecting them because this is the only way to truly learn and better each situation. I chose not to add anything from the Kegan and Lahey (2009) article because I feel that there is no "one big thing" that a person possesses but rather many big things. Overall, I simply did not feel that the article showed enough relevance in order to warrant adding an idea from it into my definition.

This week's definition: Leadership is being a strong and knowledgeable person that has a vision of what they want in their personal life, and a vision of where they want to take their leadership in the future. Leaders need to have a thorough understanding of themselves and their beliefs in order to make difficult decisions in the realm of right vs. wrong.

Analysis: After reading this week's articles by Barbuto and Wheeler (2007) and Astin and Astin (1996), I found myself thinking about how important it is for a leader to be there to serve the group, not only to build the strengths of the individual, but also to provide for the group. I added the word "serve" in my paragraph to reflect this. I truly understand the importance of leaders serving a community, because in the small town where i am from it is very necessary. I found all of the characteristics of a servant leader to be very important, but the one that really stuck out to me was the persuasion because this is sometimes necessary in order to move in the right direction. Also from the Astin and Astin (1996) article I found that most important of the seven C's is collaboration. A leader needs to be able to make the rest of the group collaborate as one in order for the group to be successful.

This weeks definition: Leadership is being a strong and knowledgeable person that has a vision of what he or she wants in his or her personal life and a vision of where they are going with their leadership in the future. They demonstrate different styles of leading to compliment the situation they are in, and can respond, not only to emergency situations, but also adapt to the changes that this emergency has caused. Leaders also must not be afraid to express their needs and hopes to the group to reach their vision. Lastly, leaders need to possess a thorough understanding of themselves in order to make difficult decisions in the realm of right vs. wrong.

Analysis: I added a couple things to this week's definition. First I added "in the future" to the end of my vision sentence due to the fact that one's vision needs to have a sense of where the future is headed not where one has been. I have never really been a person to dwell on what the future will be like, but after reading this week's Heifetz (2009) article, I realized that one does not need to predict the future, but he or she must have a general view of where they are headed. This is why I added, " can respond not only to emergency situations, but also adapt to the changes that this emergency has caused." I feel this is a very important concept for a leader to understand, but also ties into the concept of knowing the future in comparison to the past and what changes need to be made. Recognizing how fast our world is changing, leadership is forever in a state of change and adaptation is necessary for success.

Last week's definition: Leadership is being a strong and knowledgeable person that has a vision of what he/she wants in his/her life as a person and a leader. That person knows what type of leadership will perform best in every situation and are strong enough to provide stability for all of their followers. They are knowledgeable enough to ear the followers trust by giving them hope for the future. Leaders have to not be afraid to express their needs and hopes. They can do this because they have a thorough understanding of themselves and their believes. Leaders need to know how to do this while being compassionate toward their followers because no one will follow someone who does not seem caring.

This week's definition: Leadership is being a strong and knowledgeable person that has a vision of what he or she wants in his or her personal life, and a vision of where they are going with their leadership pursuit. They demonstrate different styles of leading to compliment the situation they are in, and they are strong enough to provide stability for the followers that trust these style decisions. Leaders need to not be influenced by outside sources, and make the most ethical decisions possible. They need to earn the followers' trust by giving them hope for the future, and showing them compassion toward each follower on a personal level. Leaders need not be afraid to express their needs and hopes to the group to reach a vision. Lastly, leaders need to possess a thorough understanding of themselves in order to make difficult decisions in the realm of right vs. wrong.

Analysis: I tried to make this week's definition more organized in order to make more sense than last week's definition. This week I added, " Leaders need not be influenced by outside influences, and make the most ethical decisions possible." Paul and Elder's (2006) article was instrumental in this change because it tells that ethical decision making is essential for a leader. I also added to the end of the definition, "Leaders need to possess a thorough understanding of themselves in order to make difficult decisions in the realm of right vs. wrong." I realized the importance of this sentence after reading the Kidder (2003) article because knowing what one's beliefs are leads to easier decision making pertaining to what is right and what is wrong.

Analysis: After reading the Lee and King (2001) article, I decided to change the first line to read about having a vision because I realized how important that truly is in being a leader. After reading the Terry (2001) article, I realized how important it is for a leader to understand themselves and their beliefs, so I decided to add the sentence, "They can do this because they have a thorough understanding of themselves and their beliefs." I also realized that one must be compassionate and kind to one's followers or many will not follow, which is why I decided to change the last line around a bit.

This week's definition: Leadership is being a strong and knowledgeable person that knows what type of leading will work best in every situation. I believe leaders have to not be afraid to express their needs, and not all leaders know how to do this while being compassionate towards their followers, but the ones who do have the strongest leadership of all.

Analysis: The difference between the two weeks' definitions comes into taking the four basic needs (hope, stability, trust, and compassion) as defined by Rath and Conchie (2008). I added "that knows what type of leading will work best in each situation" because after reading the Goleman (2000) article, I realized that one will not possess successful leadership if the appropriate leadership styles are not used.
