The staff directory under "About Us" is fine for looking up someone whose last name is known, but I find on the reference desk we sometimes deal with someone who is looking for a staff member and knows only the first name, or perhaps knows only the office room number. So I've copied and pasted all entries into one list below so we can use the find function of our browser to narrow in on these cases. (It's also useful for seeing how is in a particular deparment, something I may otherwise flail around at, especially if I can't remember more than an approximation of the formal departmental name.) / Denny

If you're puzzling over my perhaps over-snippy comment about patron searching only ACADEMIC SEARCH PREMIER, it's just a common problem because over and over again we see people go into the "search for articles" box under the "Articles and Databases" tab and (it appears) think they are somehow searching for all articles in the system, just because (a) there is a default that they don't have to select (ASP) and (b) it is not made thunderingly obvious that in fact they are searching only in that one index (the "in database ASP General" line off to the right seems to evade their eyes).

So we get questions/complaints from people who say they can't find anything and include their search strategy as an attachment and nine times out of ten they have not looked anywhere beyond ASP (even if they are looking for 19th century articles, or doctoral dissertations, or whatever).

I think we're doing a big disservice to our users by not emphasizing that we have a couple of hundred database indexes they might want to try, not just one, but the "dumb it down and don't scare anybody with too many choices" philosophy has won out and mostly I keep my mouth shut. This time I gave into temptation, but I will now retreat back into silence.

No, there's no problem with the journal as such, only with the home page design. Sorry if I didn't make that clear in my note (which was just meant to alert whichever of my colleagues wound up with the question that once again the patron had not gone beyond ASP).

(It was a sort of catch-all site for newspaper stories, often from small town papers, and other documents people added to the site for use of local historians, genealogists, etc. Our interest was in newspaper access, but such was so random that it didn't prove as broadly useful as we'd hoped, and when budget crunch came for SSPP it was high on the list of things to cut.)

Note Consists of serial publications of national governments that contain yearly summary data for the country as a whole. If a country does not issue such a publication, coverage may be provided by one that has similar characteristics. Also includes coverage for non-sovereign territories when parent countries treat them as separate entities.

Publications in English language version are provided when available; others in multiple languages but separately published English translations of Tables of Contents or tabular headings are included when available.

Arranged alphabetically by country following guide cards for Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Europe, North and Central America, Oceania, and South America.

These are filed as set 39 in the microfiche cabinets in the northwest corner of the reference room in Wilson. The basic arrangement is by area (all of the countries you are seeking are under the "Asia and the Middle East" section), then alphabetically by country, then chronologically by year covered.

At a quick look, CIS should be complete or near-complete for four of the five countries in the desired 1970-2005 period, the exception being [deleted]

We also have some runs (mostly incomplete) of statistical yearbooks or other statistical periodicals in hard copy, mostly duplicating works also in the fiche set, but in some cases probably not duplicated.

The most efficient way to determine hard copy holdings is to search MNCAT (I'd recommend using MNCAT CLASSIC interface) for subject heading such as

[name of country] -- Statistics

and/or

[name of country] -- Statistics -- Periodicals

Briefly, the procedures for user access are as follows:

Instructions

1. A user wishing to gain access to this database must sign a Use Agreement.

2. After signing, provide the user with one of the sealed envelopes which contains the access details.

3. Forward the signed Use Agreement to Su Chen - East Asian Library.

A campus envelope containing the Use Agreement and sealed envelopes is in Drawer C at the Reference Desk. A copy of the instructions is attached to the envelope.
