Contact: Mitch Bakken- Sports Information Director (218) 281-8414(Duluth, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team traveled to defending NCAA Division II National Champion Minnesota Duluth today to play the Bulldogs in UMD's final home game of the season. Duluth, who is averaging just over 40 points per game this season downed the Golden Eagles 44-0.
Minnesota Duluth scored 23 unanswered points in the first half but the Golden Eagle story line was the huge goal-line stand by the Minnesota, Crookston defense as the half expired. After a short UMC punt and a 27 yard return by Noah Pauley, the Bulldogs were looking to add to their lead before the half. UMD was on the Golden Eagle six yard-line with 53 seconds left and All-American Isaac Odim was prepared to punch in another touchdown. Odim's plan was snuffed out as Rafael Ortega (LB, 6-0, 230, FR, Los Angeles, Calif.) stopped him for no gain and then Cory Weisner (DL, 6-1, 280, So, Hugo, Minn.) and Kolby Gruhot (DL, 6-3, 250, SO, Argyle, Minn.) knocked Odim back for a two-yard loss to close out the half. In the second half, the Bulldogs scored 21 points to take the victory 44-0.
Minnesota, Crookston was led by Keith McBride (5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) who rushed 20 times for 27 yards. McBride and Antonio Williams (WR, 6-2, 215, JR, West Palm Beach, Fla.) each caught two passes for 16 yards. Lon Garfield (QB, 6-2, 215, JR, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) completed seven passes for 90 yards. Defensively, Cody Brekken (DB, 5-11, 190, JR, Crookston, Minn.) led all players with nine total tackles (7 solo, 2 assisted), one forced fumble and one interception.
