Winona State stuck on the first drive of the game on a nine play, 79 yard drive that covered 4:06. The play was capped off by a 28 yard pass from Greg Preston to Rayon Simmons. The Golden Eagles responded with a 10 play, 42 yard drive that was closed out by a one yard rush by Keith McBride (5-11, 195, FR, Lodi, Wis.) to give U of M, Crookston a 7-6 lead. Winona gained the momentum again when Chris Norgaard took the ensuing kickoff 81 yards to put Winona up 14-7 with the two-point conversion. The Warriors were hitting on all cylinders after the return and put 28 unanswered second quarter points on the board. They followed that with 21 third quarter points and seven fourth quarter points to take the 70-7 victory.
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was McBride who rushed 20 times for 89 yards and one touchdown. McBride averaged a solid 4.4 yards/carry with a long of 21 yards. Tim Ennis (QB, 6-2, 205, JR, Lancaster, Calif.) completed eight passes for 64 yards. Backup quarterback Lon Garfield (6-2, 215 JR, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) completed six passes for 81 yards. Receiver Cornelius King (5-5, 145, SO, Sebastian, Fla.) tied a game-high with four receptions for 48 yards. Cecil Brown (5-10, 205, FR, Edison, Ga.) led all defenders with seven tackles, all unassisted.
Winona State was led by quarterback Greg Preston who completed 12 passes for 217 yards and two scores. Theo Burkett rushed eight times for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Rayon Simmons rushed eight times for 68 yards and two scores. Sean Hertz led the receiving core with four receptions for 46 yards. The Warrior defense was led by Cody Dummer who had six total tackles.
The Golden Eagles are 1-8 overall and 0-8 in the NSIC while the Warriors advance to 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles hit the road again next week to play defending NCAA Division II National Champion Minnesota Duluth. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
