The lead changed seven times in the first half and the Comets were able to keep the game within two points by scoring 13 points off of Golden Eagle turnovers as the Golden Eagles went into the break up 34-32. Leading the way in the first twenty minutes of play was Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, JR, Northfield, Minn.) who was a perfect 3-3 from the field, 2-2 from long range and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Mayville State was led by Laura Taylor who was 5-9 from the field and recorded a first-half high eight rebounds.
Minnesota, Crookston extended its lead to 15 points at the 9:31 mark of the second half. Mayville started off cold in the final 20 minutes not scoring through six minutes of play. They were finally able to get on the board at 13:53 when Betsy Smith hit a three-pointer. The Comets went on a 10-4 run down the stretch to pull within four points but the blocked three-pointer by Zelinsky closed out the 74-70 UMC victory. Zabel led the Golden Eagles offensively with 17 points going 5-7 from the field, 3-3 from long range, 4-4 from the free-throw line. Zabel tied a team high with four assists. Zelinsky followed Zabel with 12 points and eight rebounds. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, JR, Moorhead, Minn.) recorded eight points in the game and Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, FR, Albertville, Minn.) added 10 points of her own. Leading the way for the Comets was Laura Taylor who scored 25 points in the game. She was 9-15 from the field and 7-10 from the free-throw line. She earned a double-double with 13 rebounds. Danielle Guilbert tallied 18 points and completed the second double-double with 10 rebounds.
The University of Minnesota, Crookston returns to the court on Monday, November 23 to host Valley City State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7p.m. The team then travels to the NSIC Hoopfest in Sioux Falls, S.D. on November 28-29. The team will play Winona State and Northern State in non-conference action. Game times are scheduled for noon on both days.
