Pileated Woodpecker Rescued and Released at UMC

Pileated Woodpecker.jpgA Pileated Woodpecker flew into the window on the north side of Sahlstrom Conference Center. After placing a milk crate over the bird to catch it, dining services staff called John Loegering, associate professor of Natural Resources.

Loegering retrieved the woodpecker, put it in a box for a couple hours, checked it out, banded the bird, and released it at UMC's Nature Nook.

NatR Student Tim Baker, at left, helped Loegering with the bird.  The woodpecker seemed recovered when it flew off.
