Entrepreneurs and small business owners can receive valuable help through an opportunity offered by the Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies (CRES) at the University of Minnesota Crookston. CRES is seeking regional entrepreneurs and small business owners interested in forming a unique partnership that would include valuable consulting services by U of M Crookston students under the guidance of qualified faculty at no cost.

Each semester, both spring and fall, CRES integrates projects into courses offered on campus. These projects become an integral part of the course curriculum and are designed to benefit small business owners and entrepreneurs while providing students with real-world business experiences. 

Applications for the program are accepted anytime; however, priority is given to applications received prior to the due dates. The spring semester application deadline is Friday, December 12, 2014. Applicants will be notified about their participation in the program no later than December 19.  

The projects that best fit the mission of CRES and enhance the learner outcomes for the course will be contacted for a follow-up meeting to determine guidelines, client expectations, and to review other relevant information regarding participation.

The IDEA Competition provides training, business coaching, and capital to participating entrepreneurs who want to turn an idea into a business. The Northwest Minnesota Foundation, along with the Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies (CRES) at the University of Minnesota Crookston, are sponsoring an Entrepreneurs' Luncheon on Monday, November 24, 2014, in the back room at RBJ's Restaurant, 1601 University Ave, Crookston, Minn. 3D Printing Event to Be Held at University of Minnesota Crookston April 28

The public is invited to attend "Taking Shape: 3D Printing," Monday, April 28, 6:00-8:00 p.m in the Peterson Classroom in Heritage Hall on the campus of the University of Minnesota Crookston. The event is hosted by 360-degrees Manufacturing and Applied Engineering ATE Regional Center of Excellence, together with the Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Minnesota Crookston. Attendees will have the opportunity to see 3D printers in action and learn about the potential of this emerging technology to print a multitude of 3D objects, including such things as art, jewelry, personalized dolls and action figures, mechanical parts, medical devices, implants and even food.

Attendees will learn about recent developments in 3D printing technology which are taking the world by storm and impacting many segments of society, including the arts, education, medicine and business. At the same time, the cost of personal use 3D printers has dropped to around $1,000 to $3,000 per unit, placing the purchase of these units within reach for small- to mid-sized businesses, individuals and other organizations.

In its simplest definition, 3D printers (using a process which is sometimes referred to as additive manufacturing) place material precisely, layer-by-layer, slowly building up a 3-dimensional object. Materials which are being used currently include plastic, concrete, metal, wood, food and human cells. 

The potential impact for Crookston and surrounding communities is significant. Individuals interested in learning more about these emerging technologies and seeing them in action are encouraged to attend. There is no cost, but pre-registration is highly encouraged as space is limited.

Moshe Weiss, a St.Paul, Minn., rabbi and inventor of the Sound Bender, a sound amplification

accessory for iPad, will present on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the University of Minnesota Crookston. Weiss, who appeared on ABC Television's business-themed reality show "Shark Tank" presents "Bait and Pitch--How a rabbi hooked a shark and how you can too" at noon in Bede Ballroom, Sargeant Student Center. The event is free and everyone is invited. The first 100 attendees will receive a Sound Bender. 

The book Shark Tank Jump Start Your Business: How to Launch and Grow a Business from Concept to Cash will be available for purchase at the event. Weiss will be available to sign copies of the book following his presentation.
Weiss received backing for the magnetic, power-free iPad amplifier from Shark Tank panelist Daymond John in March 2013 and since sales of the Sound Bender have grown steadily. The rabbi, teacher, and father of three, came up with the idea for the Sound Bender when he found it difficult to hear when using his iPad. After cutting out a band-aid box to help amplify the sound, Weiss developed the Sound Bender, a functional design that fits the iPad 2, 3, and 4. Two workshops designed for small business owners and entrepreneurs are slated for February

at the University of Minnesota Crookston. The topics will include the basics of getting your business online and social media tools that can lead to business success on Tuesday, February 18 and an introduction to government contracting on Thursday, February 20.

An introduction to social media workshop will take place on Tuesday, February 18 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Business Boardroom, Dowell Hall, on the Crookston campus. Presenting the workshop will be Maren Hamilton from the Flint Group in Fargo, N.D. Hamilton will discuss the basics for small business owners and go over information about deciding if social media is right for you and the social media strategies. She will also go over how to combine your business goals with social media marketing as well as the basics of the most popular social media sites. On Thursday, February 20, the Northwest Minnesota Foundation and CRES will sponsor a Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) Workshop on the Introduction to Government Contracting. For Sophomore Mawaye Appleton (In photo below, third from left), Brooklyn Park, Minn., it was much more than a visit to

company headquarters. For the accounting and management double major at the University of Minnesota Crookston, it was a time she will never forget. 

Appleton was selected to spend a day job shadowing in early January 2014 at the headquarters of Anytime Fitness in Hastings, Minn., by winning an essay contest in Kevin Cooper's small business entrepreneurship class.

Following a visit to campus by Anytime Fitness CEO and Co-founder Chuck Runyon in October 2013, Cooper's class was asked to write an essay reflecting on Runyon's presentation. "I did the assignment not knowing it was going to be considered in a contest," Appleton explains. "I took what I learned in the presentation and then in my essay applied it to an experience of my own and explained how I would make a different decision today." 

While at Anytime Fitness, Appleton met personally with Runyon and Chief Financial Officer Gerry Thomas. Hosted by Vice President of Operations Jennifer Yiangou, Appleton says she was treated to a day with professionals who care about their company and make the most of their work environment. It proved to be a powerful learning experience. 
"I took away so much from everyone at Anytime Fitness," Appleton says. "They shared job hunting tips, talked about their own experience, and offered professional advice. It was a pivotal experience for me as a student, and I cannot believe I was selected for such an amazing opportunity."

What she found during her visit was a culture that felt like family. "They took me in and made me feel like I was a part of the Anytime Fitness family even in the short time I was there," Appleton says." The environment was warm and welcoming and a great place for me to meet and learn from the best in the industry." 

While she would love an opportunity to work for Anytime Fitness someday, Appleton is currently focused on her college career. She chose to attend the U of M Crookston because of the size and the opportunity to go to school where the student/faculty ratio meant she would be able to build relationships with her instructors. She loves math, economics, and problem solving and is finding her choice of majors a great fit for her. She serves as secretary of the Accounting and Finance Society on campus and is a member of the Black Student Association.

The underlying quality of a successful entrepreneur is the ability to create and develop sustainable business ideas and adapt to changing conditions. A new major in entrepreneurship in the Business Department at the University of Minnesota Crookston will offer students the opportunity to develop skills needed to recognize ideas and potential ventures, evaluate feasibility, assemble resources, and launch new ventures. The entrepreneurship major is available to students on campus as well as online. 

The best entrepreneurs are those who possess a solid functional knowledge of the business world, the skills and vision to inspire and motivate others, and the ability to navigate change and persist in the belief of their ideas. Students will gain knowledge in business development, finance, and innovation along with developing their leadership and decision-making skills. Graduates will add immediate value to any organizational setting.

Under the leadership of Susan Brorson, professor and head, the Business Department is committed to excellence. "Offering an entrepreneurship major will help meet changing demands of employers, heightened competition, and enhance the economic and job growth realized from entrepreneurial activity," Brorson says. "Entrepreneurial behavior is increasingly recognized as a critical necessity for growth of the U.S. and international economy. It is an exciting major with a wide range of possibilities.

A student majoring in entrepreneurship can enhance the work of the Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies (CRES) and Economic Development Administration (EDA) Center, both located on campus, by assisting entrepreneurs and economic development entities in their efforts to build businesses, communities, and regions. Minnesota, Crookston on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, as part of an entrepreneurship speakers' series sponsored by the Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies (CRES). Her presentation entitled Small Beginnings--Big Dreams will take place at noon in the Kiehle Auditorium. The event is free and the public is welcome.

 Following the presentation, Blashack Strahan will be available to sign her book, Simply Shine: Stories That Stirred the Fire.  In the book, she shares her inspirational journey with Tastefully Simple. The books will be available for purchase that day. 

As a top female entrepreneur and author, Blashack Strahan is an inspiration to entrepreneurs and women across the nation. She was born and raised in Villard, Minn., and grew up on her family's farm, where she was deeply influenced by her father's entrepreneurial spirit. She managed and owned Jill's Grill in Villard and eventually started a retail gift basket shop. Then her future took a revolutionary turn. Prior to selling her business in 1994, Jill participated in a Holiday Crafters Tour to promote her gift baskets. She provided samples of the easy-to-prepare foods and experienced remarkable sales. For one class at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, the end of the semester meant integrated_marketing_communication_class.jpgsharing ideas to help strengthen and promote local farmers markets. Students in Rachel Lundbohm's integrated marketing communication class were involved in a service-learning project to help farmers markets in northwest Minnesota. Service learning combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful community service, and the purpose of the project was to conduct research on farmers' markets, suggest ways to increase awareness, and devise options for helping to build the customer base.

Research results identified target markets and their characteristics including the demographics and psychographics of each. Students developed marketing slogans, logo suggestions, a methodology for advertising, and included a marketing budget. Recommendations were made ranging from sales promotions to reaching consumers through print, radio and other media. The students also addressed the use of social media as a marketing tool. In order to determine the effectiveness of the marketing, students suggested possible assessment tools to learn more about market customers.

The research project was the result of Lundbohm, who also serves as the associate director of the Center for Rural Entrepreneurial Studies (CRES), connecting a need identified through the Northwest Regional Sustainable Development Partnership (NWRSDP) with students in the integrated marketing communication course.

The markets and member vendors collaborated in seeking assistance in market promotion. During the second week of the semester, students met with representatives of farmers markets and Linda Kingery, executive director of the NWRSDP to learn more about the marketing challenges these farmers markets face. The NWRSDP works to sustain Minnesota's natural resource-based communities and industries by addressing community-identified agriculture, natural resources, and tourism issues in partnership with the University of Minnesota.

Joining Kingery for the presentations were Sarah Reese coordinator for Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) for Polk County; Chuck and Barb Schulstad, vendors at the Mentor Farmers' Market; Lisa Loegering, assistant director of service learning at the U of M, Crookston; and Kim Turner from the White Earth Community Farmers' Market.

Kingery was impressed with the marketing ideas the students presented. "The connection of Rachel Lundbohm to both CRES and the teaching of this class were a perfect combination for us," Kingery says. "The students learned practical application of what they were taught in the class by applying it directly to promoting farmers markets in this region. We gained a lot of fresh, valuable ideas through their work and what also is exciting is that many of these ideas can be easily implemented."

In February a compiled marketing plan will be presented to farmers markets in the region and a spring semester class will continue with a similar approach in a retail and merchandising management course.
