"Patterns for Buson"
Patterns for Buson, is a series of new paintings and works on paper that are reflections on the poems of Yosa Buson. These reflections are also combined with a strong interest in the formal components of traditional Japanese patterns and designs. Yosa Buson was a poet and painter during the Edo period. Along with Matsuo Basho and Kobayahsi Issa, Buson is considered among the greatest poets of the Edo Period. Many excerpts from his poems are referenced through the titles of the pieces in this exhibition.

"Theory and Practice of Automatic Program Optimization."
In 1969 Edsger W.Dijkstra, one of the founders of computer science, wrote: "it is not only the programmer's task to produce a correct program but also to demonstrate its correctness in a convincing manner". He continued: "program correctness is not my only concern, program adaptability or manageability will be another". Following this approach, most modern programming languages are designed with features that make it easier to understand, test, modify, and maintain programs. Such features, however, often result in additional memory usage and/or slower programs. Often these costs can be offset by tools that automatically optimize programs. Program optimization, however, is a non-trivial task since changes to a program must be performed without changing the behavior of the program. In this talk I will discuss some features of modern programming languages and their effect on performance. I will give an overview of my research on proving that certain program transformations preserve programs' behavior. I will also discuss a program optimization developed with my students for the widely-used Java programming language.

Retributive emotions and behavior are thought to be adaptive for their role in improving social coordination. However, since retaliation is generally not in the short-term interests of the individual, rational self-interest erodes the motivational link between retributive emotions and the accompanying adaptive behavior. I argue that two different sets of norms have emerged to reinforce this link: (1) norms about honor and (2) norms about moral responsibility and desert. I observe that the primary difference between these types of revenge motivators lies in where the normative focus is placed after an offense. In the first form of retribution, the normative focus is on the offended party. In the second, it is on the offender. Next, I show how each class of norms is well tailored to the particular features of the environment in which these varieties of revenge behavior emerge. Finally, I examine some philosophical implications of these observations. I argue that my account, if correct, poses tough challenges for all theories that defend, or rely upon, on the existence of a robust (desert-entailing) form of moral responsibility.

Among the pottery from the Danish excavations carried out in the 1930s at Hama, Syria is a relatively large corpus of Port St. Symeon ware. Since its initial publication in 1957, this important collection has remained relatively unstudied and scholars’ knowledge of it has remained quite general. For example, in the original report, only select pieces were photographed and most simply referred to in a comparative manner by inventory number. Meanwhile, our knowledge of both Port St. Symeon ware as a “family or group of pottery, specifically, and our knowledge of pottery in what is known as Greater Syria, in general, has increased. Prof. James Schryver (UMM, Art History) and a colleague, Dr. Tasha Vorderstrasse (Independent Scholar) are currently working with the staff of the Antiquities Department of the National Museum in Copenhagen to bring this knowledge to bear on this collection.

By drawing and publishing a catalogue of each individual piece of what the original excavators grouped together as Port St. Symeon ware and imitations, Schryver and Vorderstrasse hope to provide a more complete and more correct view of this ceramic corpus. As part of this process, they also hope to refine the original grouping laid out in 1957. The second phase of this project looks to study the chemical composition of these pots in order to determine whether they were made locally or were imported to Hama from another site. The results of such tests have the potential to tell us a great deal about the interactions between a city outside of the direct influence of the Franks and its Frankish neighbors, as well as help us to further refine our understanding of the production and distribution of Port St. Symeon ware.
