Farmers, lenders, educators and many others in agriculture have a long history of wondering why some farmers perform better than others. Since conditions vary over time, we need to keep asking the question in order to have the best answers.

Twenty-one billion gallons of second-generation biofuels made from non-grain feedstocks must enter the nation's fuel supply by 2022, as mandated by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. These biofuels can be made from perennial grasses, corn stover, hybrid poplar and straw, just to mention a few sources.

A natural disaster can strike anywhere at any time, leaving in its wake damage and destruction that affects the financial well-being of survivors. You may be in disbelief, yet anxious to start to put the pieces back together. You may not be able to return to your property until it is declared safe, but you can take steps toward financial recovery. 

Tornado and storm victims can begin to address the financial issues that accompany disaster soon after securing safe shelter. Documentation is a key to recovery. "You may think you will remember important conversations and details, but chances are you won't be able to remember all of them" says Phyllis Onstad, a family resource management educator with University of Minnesota Extension.

As residents in northwest, central and southeast Minnesota begin dealing with the aftermath of tornados and storms, University of Minnesota Extension is activating its coordinated system of online and phone resources.
Volunteer soybean in corn is a fairly recent phenomenon caused by widespread use of the glyphosate-resistant technology in corn and soybean. My colleagues and I at University of Minnesota Extension have received several recent inquiries about cost-effective control procedures. 
Recent rain will result in increased weed seedling growth and weed seed emergence for many Minnesota corn and soybean fields. Understanding the principles of herbicides will help producers control weeds that are competing with these and other row crops.
I recently visited dairy farms throughout Minnesota with my University of Minnesota Extension colleagues. We observed that many dairies have invested in automated calf feeding systems, but the producers had questions about feeding procedures to optimize calf health, welfare and growth performance
