University of Minnesota Extension has been chosen by the Northwest Area Foundation (NWAF) to bolster poverty reduction strategies across the state, focusing on financial literacy education, leadership development, public policy engagement, and building awareness of poverty.

You will hear much about the importance of small businesses this summer. Candidates running for public office will talk about the role of small businesses in creating jobs, increasing production and contributing to our economy.

When they hear the phrase "small business," most Minnesotans think of manufacturing, service or retail shops. That image may be true in the Twin Cities, but in Greater Minnesota, the face of small business most often wears a seed corn cap.

Minnesota now has more ash trees than any other state, a claim held by Michigan until emerald ash borer (EAB) arrived there and destroyed millions of ash beginning in 2002.

With rising outside temperatures and predictions of high humidity in the coming weeks, livestock and poultry producers in Minnesota and the upper Midwest need to assure the barn ventilation systems are doing all that they can to keep animals as comfortable as possible this summer.

Seventy-three families from around the state, one from each participating county, have been named a "2010 Farm Family of the Year" by the University of Minnesota.
