A recently published paper on the evolution of fungi, an unusual group of organisms, provides a new glimpse into evolution of life on Earth. David McLaughlin, professor of plant biology in the College of Biological Sciences and the paper's co-author, says that as early fungi made the evolutionary journey from water to land billions of years ago and branched off from animals, they shed tail-like flagella that propelled them through their aquatic environment.
