Red Parasol Projects on Vimeo (from VISUAL NARRATIVES)

THE RED PARASOL PROJECT
University of Minnesota Duluth digital art students collaborated with acting students in Spring 2013. The unifying constraint: each short video project needed to integrate a Red Parasol. Five project storylines went into production, each featuring 2-3 student actors from UMD's Acting for the Camera class. Each production team also included 3 students from our Digital Filmmaking class. Each small crew needed to cover all the pre-production concept development and location camerawork for their production. Students took turns directing ...

Weekly Plan 5/20-5/24/13 Natalie Lead Teaching (from Shirley G. Moore Lab School)

Overview
We have had some wonderful weather lately that has allowed us to dig into our topics of spring, insects, and taking care of our habitat. One way that the children are representing their learning and ideas about these topics is by creating a classroom mural. It incorporates a vast array of insects, flowers, and even a trashcan! We look forward to future explorations outside as spring continues to come alive.

Herseth Sandlin and the US House to Senate Pathway (from Smart Politics)

Just 10 of the 44 female U.S. Senators in history first served in the House of Representatives and three of the last 13 since 2002

Stephanie Herseth Sandlin's decision Monday not to enter the 2014 South Dakota U.S. Senate race means the Democratic Party has probably lost its best chance to keep the seat held by retiring three-term Senator Tim Johnson.

The former Democratic U.S. Representative stated she wished to spend more time with her family and at her new position as ...

Some tools a homeowner needs often, like hammers and screwdrivers. Some tools are used only a few hours a year, like air compressors. By sharing these tools among neighbors we can save money while getting higher quality tools. If you are interested please comment on the following:

- Ownership: Individual or belonging to the club?
- Storage: At owner's home or centrally located?
- What do you have that you would loan? (Don't include frequently used items)

We're finally here! (from BWB Tanzania Summer 2013)

After flights to Chicago, Amsterdam, and finally Kilimanjaro, we are back at the airport about to fly to Mwanza! We'll be taking the overnight ferry tonight and get to Bukoba tomorrow morning, where we will finally be able to settle in. The land here is beautiful and very green! We got to see a glimpse of Mt. Kilimanjaro from a distance, and are extremely excited to be there in 5 weeks! So far it's been a little hectic, as one of ...

Saturday, May 18, 2013 (from Lake Harriet)

Creek running fairly high after recent rain. Some sunlight through high clouds; breeze from the south. Solitary mallard on a rock off the southwest inlet; blackbirds calling from the brush. Scores of coots diffusely spread out over a large swatch of water off the western shore, bobbing in the breeze. Two geese standing on the western embankment. Marsh on northeastern shore full to overflowing, loud with bird calls. Paths there busy; circling motorcycles louder than the landing planes. ...

Weekly Lesson Plan: Week of May 6th, 2013 (from Shirley G. Moore Lab School)

Weekly Plan
Week of May 6, 2013
Elizabeth's Class

-Updated May 18, 2013-

Overview:
As the spring session continues, the children's varied interests continue to deepen and diversify. With the introduction of small groups last week, the already strong interests in Insects, Moving Objects, and Letters and Words continue to grow. The children "check in" with our classroom insects daily, always making sure they are fed and healthy. The writing center is constantly buzzing both with the children's interest in producing words with ...

The 15 Most Important Minutes of the Work Week (from ITLP Tuesday Readings)

Today's reading, ["The 15 Most Important Minutes of the Work Week"](http://www.fastcompany.com/3008912/work-smart/the-15-most-important-minutes-of-the-work-week), is from the pen of Lydia Dishman, business journalist covering innovation, entrepreneurship, and style. She regularly writes for FastCompany, CBSMoneywatch, and the *New York Times*.

Dishman begins her essay by asking "How often do you and your boss have a real one-on-one conversation about your work?" Once a year? Once a month? Once a week? The essay argues for once a week saying ...

Here in Longfellow many of us face similar problems in our aging homes. Sometimes it feels like when a problem comes up we each have to reinvent the wheel. Sample ideas:

Looking back on the three different productions that I was a part of on ATL and the three I was a part of on BTL, I feel like each productions had their strong points and should not be disregarded because of sequential order of each shoot. Although, I do agree that over all there was definite progress made from the production ones to production threes, I think it's important to remember that our roles had changed in each production.
Wrap Up - Bjorn (from COMM 3201.002)

I was super excited to get going in this class. I really didn't think it would be as complicated as it was. When we were doing production one, it was like an experiment. I don't think anyone really knew what was going on, but we all pulled off the first production and did pretty well anyways. Similarly to the entire class, the lighting was definitely the biggest issue in my first production. I didn't think so much light was needed ...

The weird part is I woke up one day and it just kind of happened. I woke up and just felt like an adult. Let Thursday, May 16th, 2013 go down in history.

A huge part of this sudden adulthood comes from working full time at my internship with Cuningham Group. I wake up at 6:30am Monday-Friday and work until 5:00pm. I get an hour lunch break in the mix of things where I can do a variety of things including ...

Traffic Congestion and Job Accessibility (from The Transportationist.org)

I was interviewed a few weeks ago by Dale Connelly for KFAI Community Radio. The edited interview (aired April 22, 2013) is below as an MP3 (5:51)

Every so often we get a discouraging report on traffic congestion in metropolitan areas.
The latest rating from Texas A and M’s Transportation Institute gave Washington DC the worst rating for congestion, followed by Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Boston. No big surprise there.

But one University of Minnesota professor says counting stationary ...

Wrap Up (from COMM 3201.002)

There is definitely a sharp contrast between productions one and three for my ATL groups. In production one, everything was very simple, we were just trying to get a feel for a real-time live-to-tape production and with production three, we were a lot more comfortable in the studio and were able to do a few things that were much more effective than in the first project. Lighting is the main difference between the two; production one was extremely dark, impossible ...

This still is from the movie Harry Potter. This scene is during the great feast in the great hall. The depth is very well established in this scene. There is a very wide angle to show all of the image in focus. The depth is established through several elements, through the students, plates, candles, and building decor. The student body is diverse, including caucasians and students of color with an arrangement of different facial expressions and hair length. The plates ...
