Transferring bio pages to Word

Welcome to the VG staff blog! Omise'eke and Valerie, you have been added as authors. If you have something to post on the blog simply go to http://blog.lib.umn.edu/, click onto "login to Uthink," and use your x500.

As I was going through the bios I realized that we can finally see the light. I have to double-check with Dhana-Marie, but it looks like there are only 45 left. I'll continue with "S." Valerie, take "R." That leaves Neely, Barbara through Quintasket, Christine (Mourning Dove) (unless someone has since worked through "N").

I have re-posted Marcia's Instructions with an Example bio that explains how to make Word files for the CLA web team. I've included a
second example as well.

To add tags to the remaining bios use the attached Excel file.

Please don't hesitate to contact Adam or Kim if you have questions or you want someone to look over your first version.

TIP: When you copy & paste from the web into Word it is best to use Safari or Internet Explorer because Firefox doesn't seem to keep the formatting.

NOTE: Some bio pages have book titles in bold. They need to be changed to italics.

How to...Create an Ecto account for yourself

To make an account:

1) In Movable Type, access your account settings by clicking on your username on the top right corner of the page. Once there, scroll down and fill in an API password (whatever you want it to be) and save the changes.

2) In Ecto click on accounts, then click add new account.

3) Enter the weblog URL: http://voices.cla.umn.edu/vg. Click next.

4) In the System dropdown menu choose Movable Type, then fill in the "Access Point" field with http://voices.cla.umn.edu/virtual/mt-xmlrpc.cgi. Click next

5) Enter your Movable Type Username and the API password you just created.

6) Enter your preferred ecto account name (i.e. YOURNAME-VG). Click next.

7) Click next again. Then click finish.

How to..notify and be notified of new VG staff blog entries

There are two ways to notify or to be notified of new posts on the blog.

1) RSS (Real Simple Syndication). This is the easiest way to be aware of new posts on the VG Staff Blog. Go visit the blog and click the RSS button up in the URL address bar on your browser OR click the link on the right-hand side bar that looks like this

You have to either use an RSS feed reader in your browser (I use Live Bookmarks in Firefox) or use an online RSS reader like Google Reader. The RSS feed will show all new posts.

2) The other way to send and receive notifications is to click on "Notifications" after you've published a post on the staff blog. That will send an email to all of us with a link to the new post.
