Animals in Medicine

The University of Minnesota has recently made a break through--cows that are cared for and comforted make better and more milk. As a cow lover I think this is great news for cows and humans everywhere! But what about other animals. Animals are part of every research trial for every drug you take be it Nyquil, Anti-biolotics, or Prozac! Do you believe that animals should be used (and therefore killed in most instances) in order to help the human race be healthy? Why or why not?

What would you do?

There are a few groups of people left on the planet who have not been in contact in any way with the "modern" world. Some of these groups exist in South America. Currently what we know about these groups of people we know by spy satellite and helicopter pass overs. You learn from the satellite images that many people within the tribe appear hurt (who knows why). Should contact be made with this group in order to bring medical help? Why of why not?

Religion in Health Science

Should faith and the health sciences be separate? Is there a place for chaplains, other clergy, and faith healers? How much of a role should these religious people take in the lives of the hospital patients? Where are the boundaries? Should patients (including children) be able to make their own choices that are in line with their religion but put their health in danger?

What would you do?

A true story: An elderly Vietnamese woman collapses and is rushed to the hospital. There she is told that she needs to have a blood work-up. She agrees to have her blood draw but after insists that they put it back into her after they run the tests. She speaks some English and so the nurses and doctors try to explain the situation. Some of the doctors jokingly allude there could be some sort of underlying psychiatric situation. Would you send the blood out for testing or not? What are the intercultural conflicts at work in this situation? We'll talk in class and you will learn what the real out come was.

As you all probably know the new HPV vaccine is out and there is serious debate as to if girls should be given the vaccine, when and what should they be told...what does your group (coming from the perspective of your various fields) think?

Introductions

As I introduce you to the course I would like all of you to introduce yourselves to your peers. Who are you, where to you come from, why are you here, what do you care about, and if you are a "coke," "soda," or "pop" person are all good ways to start this post. After you post take a look at least five other people's posts.
