October 2010 Archives
There are MAPS and Microfiche in the Reference Room (some are barcoded, some are not). Either way, they can be checked-out. Procedures for Creating Quick Catalog Records for Maps and Microfiche can be found HERE under Aleph. They are also kept in the PROCEDURES notebook at each of the desks.
Also, there is a supply of tubes at the 2nd Floor Desk in the wooden cabinet that the maps can be rolled up and placed in once they are checked out. Please leave a comment on this blog posting after you have reviewed the procedures. Any questions - ask a supervisor. Thanks, Amy
Hey guys! I've been having issues with prowlers at my apartment and just want to go home for an extended weekend this weekend. So if anyone would like to take my Saturday 4-9 shift its up for grabs!
Thanksgiving is fast approaching and I am looking for a replacement for my Saturday shift. I cover the desk 10-1 and 2-6. If anyone is able to work either of these shifts that would be awesome! Let me know.
Chem 1021-1022 has a new item on Reserve. It is a Custom Solutions Manual.
The manual is divided into sections. The call number includes the chapter numbers to help the students get the section of the manual needed.
For example, Chem 1021 uses QD33.2 .S55 Chpt. 1-7 and QD33.2 .S55 Chpt.8-12/15.
Take a look at the course page for each class to become familiar with the call numbering.
Since Walter Library is now open on Saturday, 10/23, that means we need staff to cover the hours. Right now the only hours that we need to cover are 4-9. If you are able to cover ANY part of this, please let me know ASAP. I leave at 3pm and need to know before I leave today what is going on.
So again, the hours to cover are 4-9, but 6-9 would help out too. We need a closer.
Well, 3pm has come and gone and no one has stepped up yet. If you are able to please call the main circulation desk or Tim so we can get this worked out tonight. :)
Walter Library will be OPEN on Saturday 10/23. The Obama rally has been re-located and will not affect Walter Library. We will be open our normal hours, 10am to 9pm.
Hey all, I have had this date posted on the board for quite some time so it's about time I start badgering people. The shift is from 6-midnight. I have concert tickets for that evening that I really, really don't want to have to pass up at the last minute. I am free from 1-5 if anyone would be willing to switch around. I am also available for many other shifts if anyone would want to switch. Please let me know or sign up on the board a.s.a.p.!!! Thanks!
So I print something out today and nothing went but I shut the printer off and turn it back on. Then two request came up and I was able to find one book for one of the hold slip but not the another. The trick to get the printer to work if it does not print, is to shut it off, wait a second, then turn it back on. It SHOULD work. If not call one of the supervisor. The funny thing is the hold slip that I can't find the book for, well the name of the patron use to be my old roommate.. small world.
When an instructor places material on RESERVE that is not the kind of thing the library would ordinarily buy for library use I often give the item a funny call number.
We now have a DVD here which is to be used for a class Midterm in CSCL/SCMC 1201. There are 10 copies of the same film clip.
Students must use the DVD in the Library and there is NO OVERNIGHT usage as is typical of DVD's. It has a 2 hour loan period but the student can check it out again if needed.
The call number is listed on the course reserves page but here it is too:
X CSCL/SCMC 1201 Clip.
All X call numbered items are at the end of the RESERVE call number range. Ask for locational help if needed.
This weekend I am going home and I work 7:45 to 2:00p.m. on Friday. If anyone could pick up any later portion of my shift or the whole shift for Friday, that would be super. From 10a.m. to 2p.m. I work 2nd desk and it's pretty quiet so it's a decent time to get your homework done. Any help is appreciated and thanks for considering it.
Another lovely episode of 'please take my shift', brought to you by me. So, I put on the board about a month ago to see if someone could take my shift on this Sunday. And lucky you, its still available! But for real, if someone could take it that would be great. Micah and I have been both having a bit of difficulty getting out of working our 6-midnight shifts on Sunday, and really they are a good shift, not much going on and an EXCELLENT time for homework and studying. And its really not that late, if thats what everyone is worried about. I will give you an energy drink if you think it is. Anywho, I am going home this weekend because I have an interview for a post-graduation job, which is uber important, and it would just be great not to be rushed this weekend.
SO, if anyone wants to take it, that'd be way awesome.
p.s. -- Sunday Oct 24th, 6-midnight.
ALL buildings on the Northrop Mall, including Walter Library, will be closed for President Obama's visit on Saturday, October 23. You do not need to report to work on this day if you are normally scheduled for Saturday's.
Hey Guys and Dolls,
I was hoping to get out of town on Friday Oct 22 through the 23, and I would really appreciate it if someone could fill in for me on Saturday the 23rd. The hours are from 3-9, a grrrreat time to devote to homework.
There are some minor changes to Pick Up 2 that I want to let everyone know about. As usual, please be sure to take the items from the shelf at the Basement Circulation desk. This shelf is now labeled "To be shelved with Pick Up 2". You can't miss it. There are also additional labels for Theses, Reference, and Popular Reading. The Popular Reading items are shelved in the coffee shop area and should be shelved during Pick Up 2. The pink slip has been changed to allow for the Popular Reading items to be recorded.
Another change on the slip is that the "End Table" items in the Reference room no longer are there. These were specific items that had a spine label marker of "End Table".
If you have any questions, please ask.
Hi again, I'm still looking for someone to cover my shift this Sunday the 17th from 6pm-12. Being more specific the shift is 6-8 on the 2nd desk and 8-12 in the basement, however, if you prefer one or the other you can consult Shannon to arrange the situation. She is always available through pidgin chat or on the phone if you need veteran advice or change your desk preference! I have it posted on the shift board so I'll keep my eye on here and there!
Hi everybody, I will be attending New Employee Orientation next week, so I was hoping against hope someone could take my desk shift from 8-12midnight next Tuesday, October 12th. Its straight up four hours of desk so you could do your homework and totally get paid for it!
Because you know you will be up until midnight doing your homework anyway, so why not do it at your favorite library basement desk! There's usually not a lot of traffic (don't worry, freshmen) because other people are busy with THEIR homework, and you will have an experienced student working right on the 2nd floor if you have any questions.
I thank you ahead of time, and have a nice weekend. It's slapped on the board up there for the taking.
Hey, I was hoping to find someone to work for me on Saturday October 16th and Saturday the 30th. if you can take one, or both, please let me know. As usual the shift is from 4-9 and mainly at the desk with the exception of a 1/2 hour of shelving and a 1/2 hour of break. Thanks.
Hey everyone! I've come to realize that I stretched myself too thin this semester and was wondering if anyone was interested in taking some of my hours for the semester. i'm looking to give up my shift on tuesdays from 2-5pm. it's one hour at 2nd desk and 2 at b-desk, a pretty easy shift usually. let me know if you are interested. it would really help me out.
Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in picking up a couple of hours for me this Friday. They would be at the basement desk from 3-5PM. It is kind of last minute but I am going to Chicago and would like to beat the rush hour traffic. If interested my email is firstname.lastname@example.org and my phone # 507-360-6520.
Just a reminder that when shelving, the bookend needs to go at the end of the shelf of books. It is there to hold the books up. I have been seeing a number of shelves that have books outside the bookend. My guess is that it is patrons leaving the books there and not finding a table or book truck for the item. If you see items out side the bookend, please take some time to re-shelve it.
So I was planning a trip back home next weekend and I'm looking for someone to take my 12 to 6pm shift on Sunday. I will try to take a shift for someone but my schedule are pretty busy.
I know this is looking REALLY far into the future, but would someone be able to take my Sat., 11/27 shift from 10-2? I'd like to be able to go home for Thanksgiving, and I'd rather not drive 12 hours round-trip in two days.
This is a general reminder...any media inquires (MN Daily, local news stations, etc.) should be referred to the Libraries Central Administration Office at 612-624-4520 located in 499 Wilson Library.
