Hi everybody,

Priscilla is very busy this week with Reserves, and with Amy out I would like you all to be especially efficient and self-reliant. If you need help of have a question, please consult your coworkers around you or at the other desk, this blog and its many helpful links, Tim by chat or phone, or Charlie Heinz or Amy Neeser by chat or phone. Your absolute last option should be Priscilla, and only in case of flood/fire/Bat Signal. PLEASE KEEP PRISCILLA AS YOUR ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT, UTILIZING ALL OTHER RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO YOU. She has very important work to do. I will try to remain on chat all day, even when I am away from the desk.

Book returns, shelving

Vote 0 Votes

Hi students,

As the summer winds down to the semester, I want to post a few reminders for you all before the busy school year starts. I've started to notice that the return shelves behind circulation have been getting a little sloppy, so just keep in mind.

1. Take your time returning books to the shelves behind Circ. First check to make sure whether you have a book or periodical. Periodicals will always have a yellow "PER" sticker on the spine, but if it has fallen off (and they do) it will ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS have "PER" before the call number. After that, hake sure you take time to place the book or periodical in the correct call dumber designation. I had about half a dozen mistakes TONIGHT ALONE w/r/t the last two issues, which could result in mis-shelving and lost books.

2. Any books with torn/missing pages, torn or broken spines, broken covers or text blocks should be given to me, either by placing them on the Mending Shelf (bottom rung of the Hold Shelf) or in my box.

3. Part of your duties at the Circ desk as well as customer service is to set up book trucks once there are enough books to fill one. So when you have time in between patrons, please assess whether there are enough books or bound periodicals (30 or more is a good amount), please put a truck together and record it on the shelving sheet. Also, remember your "Murder in the Stacks" training and always place the books spine side out (as you would on the shelves in B,S,F) when placing items on the trucks. Never place items spine side up!

Have a nice summer!

Hi all,
As you might notice, there have been some changes to the pre-shelving area behind Basement Circ. The periodical shelving has been moved from the wood shelves adjacent to the hold shelf to the metal shelves behind the book pre-shelve area. So if you remember where the recent (206) periodicals were shelved, that is now where we will be placing all periodicals that are returned or come in the mail.

The difference now is that the periodicals will be divided between bound and unbound. The bound items are to the left and will be shelved by you, the student staff much as it has been. The unbound periodicals are to be shelved to the right, in the boxes labeled with their respective call numbers. Please place the unbound periodicals in the first available (read: left) box, appropriate to call number. These will not be shelved by you any longer, as they will be be Tim's duty from now on.

If you have any questions, please as Tim, Amy, or Priscilla.
