Boy dies on birthday

Many think of their birthday as the day of their birth, but for Sean Humphrey, it was the day he died as well.

Police allegedly found Humphrey partially frozen to the ground near his home in Chaska. He died Sunday on his 19th birthday at Hennepin County Medical Center, Star Tribune said.

Humphrey's father, Bob Humphrey, was worried when son did not come home Friday night and when he saw on the news police were attempting to identify a frozen boy, he knew it was his son, Pioneer Press said.

Humphrey allegedly hit his head on a curb and fell. He froze to the ground and his body temperature lowered to 77 degrees, Star Tribune said.

al Qaeda video shows attack in Afghanistan

A recent al Qaeda video Friday claims an attack in Afghanistan on a U.S. army base.

The video shows a rocket attack on the military base, but does not show the rockets landing, Fox said. This 56 second video seems to be the most recent video made, Fox said .

The tapes authenticity was not confirmed, but it was posted on a Web site where terrorist groups have previously posted messages, CNN said.

Parents who abandoned children found in Montana

The couple who abandoned their 17-and-15-year-old daughters were found in Montana Thursday night.

William Anderson, 44, and Jennifer Anderson, 42, left their children in September after saying they were going to work "early" and never returned, Star Tribune said.

The couple was allegedly charged with gross misdemeanor child neglect, Kare 11 said.

The children were placed in foster care, Kare 11 said.

Head of nuclear agency in U.N. chats with North Korea

U.N. Chief nuclear inspector is traveling to North Korea to discuss their nuclear program.

Mohamed ElBaradei will take this trip in the second week of March to discuss details of dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear program, CNN said. This will ultimately renounce all use of nuclear weapons.

U.S. administration is very pleased at the progress, CNN said.

This visit would be ElBaradei's first since 1997, BBC said.


Clarification on remarks toward Iran/Iraq

U.S. Rep. Michelle Bachmann is attempting to apologize and clarify her previous remarks about Iraq and Iran.

Bachmann told the St. Cloud Times Feb. 9 that Iraq should have more Iranian influence, Star Tribune said. She now apologizes and said "Sorry if my words have been misconstrued," Pioneer Press said.

This statement is not a reflection of any decision already made by Iraq, Star Tribune said.

Supervalu sued for accusation of mislabeling meat

SUPERVALU Inc. is being sued by grocery shoppers Thursday for allegedly mislabeling their meat at Cub Foods stores in Minnesota.

The shoppers, Michael Olson and John Wylde, claim ordinary meat is being labeled as Black Angus cut, which tends to be more expensive, Kare 11 said.

Two previous meat cutters at Cub Foods testified that the mislabeling has been in practice for the past five years, Pioneer Press said.

The workers are no longer employed at Cub Foods and did not leave because of allegations, Pioneer Press said.

School bus brakes under investigation

The Minnesota State Patrol is demanding some buses off the road because of possible brake failure.

State Patrol estimates the brake failure includes about 10 percent of buses, which would make more than 1,000 buses in need to have brakes checked, Fox said.

Officials of State Patrol are not releasing if this is related to the Ham Lake bus accident that injured two dozen children and adults, Kare 11 said.

Chevrolet and GMC bus models were ordered off the road Friday, Kare 11 said.

Smith's 2001 will brings confusion

The release of Anna Nicole Smith's 2001 will left the courts with confusion since it states her estate should be given to her son who died last year.

Since Smith's son died, the estate will most likely go to her baby daughter, although her will did not state how much she was worth, Kare 11 said.

The will was not filed in court so technically, it will not be depended upon for this case, Star Tribune said.

The judge is allowing Smith to be buried after the long delay, but her burial place has not yet been decided, Star Tribune said.

Father charged in his daughter's death

St. Paul man charged with second degree unintentional murder against his 15-year-old daughter made first court appearance Thursday.

Beauford Jackson told his daughter's mother not to call the paramedics after she arrived home to find her daughter barely breathing, Pioneer Press said. Mother, Maeve Clifford, called the paramedics anyway.

Jackson's bail is set at $750,000 and is being held in Ramsey County jail, Star Tribune said.

Lottery winner shocked at double win

A Maplewood man set a Minnesota record Saturday and Sunday by freakishly winning the lottery two days in a row.

Raymond Snouffer Jr. matched five numbers for both lotteries winning $25,000 each day, Pioneer Press said.

Lottery officials are stunned at this win. They described the unique event as an "unbelievable feat," Pioneer Press said.

The odds of winning the Northstar jackpot are 170,000 to 1, Star Tribune said.


Palestinian unity begins

The Hamas Cabinet resigned Thursday which made room for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to coalition with Fatah.

There was a warning, however, from the United States that the government may disagree with the new arrangement, CNN said.

Fighting between Fatah and Hamas between December and February has resulted in a loss of more than 90 Palestinian lives, BBC said.

The United States Assistant Secretary of State, David Welch, will not associate with any members of the new government deal, CNN said.

Boy, 4, left in car during gambling spree

A man allegedly left his 4-year-old boy in the car during subzero temperatures Wednesday night while he went in to gamble.

A casino visitor allegedly found the boy wandering in the parking lot after he was left outside for what is believed as an hour and a half, Kare 11 said. His father had gone inside Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake to gamble.

The boy was treated and released at St. Francis hospital in Shakopee, Star Tribune said.

The father is in jail pending charges expected to be filed Friday.

Semis collide killing two

Two semis collided Thursday night on Interstate 494 in South St. Paul killing both drivers.

A westbound truck crossed the median and crashed into the eastbound semi before 9:45 p.m, Kare 11 said.

At least one of the semis burst into flames after the collision, Fox said. Other drivers tried to rescue semi drivers, but were unable to because of the fire, Kare 11 said.

The police shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 494 by Robert Street for several hours, Fox said.

Two more die from flu

Two more flu-related deaths can be added to Minnesota's toll bringing the total to three of the 13 reported this year.

According to Kare 11, the two recent dead is an 8-year-old and a 17-month-old.

Fox
reported the three deaths are unrelated and none of them were vaccinated. However, according to Kare 11 all three died from the A (H1) strain of the flu virus.

Children and the elderly are highly encouraged to get a flu vaccination.


Anna Nicole Smith dies Thursday

Anna Nicole Smith, 39, died Thursday after collapsing in her hotel room.

According to CNN, Smith's attorney said she had been suffering from flulike symptoms for a few days. Smith was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where she died. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Just a few months earlier, Smith gave birth to her daughter and a few days later her son, Daniel, 20, died in what was believed as a drug-related death, according to Kare 11.

Smith is often in the news for her legal battles. More recently, however, for her advertisements with a weight loss program, TrimSpa.

International child pornography site discovered

A child pornography site involving 77 countries and thousands of viewers and participants was found Wednesday in Austria.

Officials first ranged the ages of children from "0-14," but more recently stated there were no infants involved, CNN said. During 24 hours, 8,000 videos were downloaded by investigators, CNN said.

No arrests have yet been made, BBC, said. Officials are investigating in several countries including: Germany, United States, Austria, and Denmark. Fourteen suspects have allegedly confessed to downloading material in Austria, BBC said.

In order to download this material, a fee of $89 was charged, BBC said.

Flu-related death sparks new interest in flu shot

Calls to clinics for appointments to get flu shots increased significantly after the death of an 8-year-old St. Paul boy last week.

Lucia Satar died last week of pneumonia, which is related to a Type A strain of the flu, Star Tribune said.

Because of the high demand, The Garden View Medical Building in St. Paul has opened up their clinic to patients wanting flu shots on Saturday from 9:00 am till noon, Fox said.


Kosovo's plan of indepence denied

Kosovo proposed a plan Friday to become independent from Serbia and begin governing itself.

The plan included Kosovo's own flag, anthem, army, constitution and the ability to interact in international affairs, CNN said.

However, President Boris Tadic is concerned this plan will give Kosovo complete independence and will not agree to it, BBC said.

Other provinces have accepted the plan and would like to see Kosovo's independence. Ultimately the decision will be given to the United Nations Security Council, BBC said.

Florida storms leave 14 dead, dozens injured

Storms flew through Florida early Friday producing at least one tornado killing 14, destroying many homes and leaving dozens hospitalized.

Among the debri from hundreds of homes was a flattened church built to withstand 150 mph winds, Star Tribune said.

The storm also produced several accidents on I-4 causing the interstate to be closed for several hours, New York Times said.

The storm also left 20, 000 customers without power, Kare 11 said.

Beloved teacher killed in crash

Students, teachers and other faculty visited grief counselors to mourn the death of a teacher after a head-on crash Thursday morning.

Grief counselors were housed at Dassel-Cokato Middle School Thursday and will continue to stay as needed, Kare 11 said.

Gail Schwandt, 54, was involved in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 12 just before the road leading to the school, Star Tribune said.

The other driver, Adam Janckila, 20, is listed in satisfactory condition after being airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, Kare 11 said.

Police say the road was in good driving condition during the time of the crash, Fox 9 said.
