         <title>On satire</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Beth, I think you might be interested in <a href="http://news.ft.com/cms/s/384be1be-9eb1-11da-ba48-0000779e2340.html">Time for the last post</a> from the Financial Times. The interdependence of  <em>kairos</em> and satire plays some part in it:</p>

And if Gawker was a kind of guilty pleasure people enjoyed after the horror of 9/11 had lingered just a little too long, it is a pleasure that has begun testing readersâ€™ limits. A posting in August noted that a woman had been knocked down and killed crossing the street in front of an Urban Outfitters store: â€œYou know weâ€™re completely in favor of anything that suggests NYC is edgy,â€? wrote Gawker. â€œBut weâ€™d argue things have gone too far when shopping for ironic T-shirts becomes a potentially fatal extreme sport.â€?<br /><br />

<p>The woman turned out to be an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor, which lead The New York Times to accuse Gawker of turning â€œeveryday heartbreakâ€? and â€œheinousâ€? crimes into â€œinflection points for ironyâ€?.<br /><br /></p>

<p>Much as the outpouring of humour in New York in the 1920s that gave rise to the Algonquin Round Table was a temporary post-traumatic cultural reaction to the shock of the Great War, the Gawker spirit is wearing a little thin in light of a seemingly endless bloody insurgency in Iraq, a mesmerising failure of government to deal with the massive catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, and revelations of corruption on Capitol Hill. â€œSatire,â€? said Choire Sicha, â€œis the most useless cultural effluvia one could possibly produce out of the cultural situation in America right now.â€?<br />

         <title>Response from Last Week</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Regarding my response from last week: I really don't have much to add that is not already in the paper, or that I didn't touch upon in my presentation. Additionally, the last section in my paper, in which I talk about ideology and hegemony, was largely answered in this week's readings, though I'm still not clear how duality of structure is in conversation with the ideas brought up this week by Pare and Schryer. Both last week and this week's response papers are largely asking the question, "How does the study of filmic genres, and parody in particular, fit into rhetorical/linsguistic genre theory?"</p>]]></description>

         <title>Manging Information Overload</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>As we discussed in class, it sometimes seems impossible to keep up on or participate in electronic discussions. Using a feed-reader can help with the uptake part. As for as the output part, well, if anyone discovers the secret to that please let me know.</p>

<p>I use: <a href="http://www.bloglines.com/">bloglines</a> because it is free and I can track things across multiple computers easily. You can enter in feed URL's directly on the web interface, but I would recommend installing their bookmarklet so you can just subscribe with a click. I used to use the notifier that alerts you when new postings are made, but now I just keep a tab open in Safari or Firefox and refresh it when I have the chance to read.</p>

<p>Just in case you haven't discovered them, a couple of useful feeds for Rhetoric people are <a href="http://inventio.us/ccc/">CCC Online</a>, where an archive of previously published articles is being established, and <a href="http://kairosnews.org/">Kairosnews</a>, which often has CFPs and some job listings. There are many more, of course. If people are interested, we can always swap useful links here too.</p>]]></description>

<p>As you remember, I'm sure, I talked mostly in class last night about my disappointment with people who challenge structuralist by oversimplifying the systematic positions they take.  Those of you who know me, also, know that my undergraduate exposure to physical science makes me think that the resources of probability, computational mathematics, and more abstract algebras and calculii (is that the plural?) make a modern reinterpretation of some discredited structural opinions at least worthy of argument.</p>

<p>Anyway, my response isn't really about that.  It's about expanding my model to allow for B. and about two of the several problems I have with his assertion.</p>]]></description>

         <title>North American Genre Theorists</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>The North American Genre School (NAGS)â€”a brief history<br />

<p>No one included in the above group would wish to think of themselves as belonging to a â€œ schoolâ€?â€”we are far too diverse a group--however, Sonny Hyon, a doctoral student of John Swales coined the term her 1996 article, â€œGenre in three traditions: Implications for ESLâ€? which appeared in TESOL Quarterly (pp. 693-722). Hyon had written a dissertation in which she compared the rhetorically-oriented genre analysts (e.g. Miller 1984; Bazerman, 1988; Devitt, 19 91; Myers, 1990; Berkenkotter and Huckin, 1995, Smart, 19xx, Freedman & Medway, 1994, etc.).  Carolyn Millerâ€™s 1984 article, â€œGenre as social actionâ€? in the Quarterly  Journal of Speech, 70:  151-176, was seminal  (germinal!)  in being the uber text for the flurry of articles that followed by the above authors (Iâ€™ll bring copies of Miller, 1984 to class next week, but would encourage you to get it on your own as an â€œintroductionâ€? to the Genre Knowledge book. <br />
The rhetorically-oriented NAGS was compared by Hyon to the genre analysts who mostly were applied linguists by training, and were interested in the pedagogical implications of academic genres for ESL and ESP training.  This second group included John Swales, Vijay Bhatia, Ann Johns, Tony Dudley Evans, John Flowerdew, and Brian Paltridge.  A third group of genre analystsâ€”according to Hyonâ€”were the Australian functional systemic linguists (FSP), trained by Michael Halliday to think about genre in relation to â€œregistersâ€? of different disciplinary spheres. This group of linguists were interested in direct applications of disciplinary genres as the basis of language learning, especially when it came to the language training of non-native speakers in elementary schools. This group included Gunter Kress (who has since moved away from Hallidayâ€™s views), J.R. Martin, Francis Christie, Paul Thiebault, and a group of linguists at the University of Sidney, who thought it would be possible to design an entire elementary school genre-based curriculum in which scientific genres would be as much a part of the curriculum and instruction as  the narrative and personal experience genres that language arts teachers usually teach</p>

<p>Hyonâ€™s categories have stuck; and genre theory (outside of literary theory) is commonly divided into the above three camps--; however,  in actuality there is considerable overlap, since no researcher or theorist ever stays in the same place, and many who have been categorized as being in one group or the other have moved on to new interests, and new issues and problems which call for new approaches to genre studies.  One of the most important of these is, I believe, the issue of multimodality.  Most Americans are shifting from a print-based form of learning to alternative modes that include a semiotic array including graphics and visuals, streaming video, three dimensional objects in virtual reality, and  interactive oral and written forms of communication.  Thus genre theorists will  have to develop new vocabularies and  new tools for understanding and describing these emerging communicative forms.  Cristinaâ€™s presentation last night hinted at this new vocabulary and new tools for analysis. . .<br />
