June 22 assignment

What topics did you identify in your statement of purpose?

Contemporary mulit-cultural fiction by women and cultural studies.

How (if at all) has your thinking about your subject matter changed?

Instead of foucsing solely on contemporary fiction by women, I've been moving toward the examination of all humanities from an indigenous culutral perspective. Undoubably, this will change as I progress and find a focus.

If you had to explain your interest in this topic to a friend, what would you say?

<em>I am interested in studying the visual arts, film and contemporary fiction from an indigenous cultural perspective. Traditionally these arts are viewed and examined by Western standards. I contend that the criticisms of these arts cannot be examined without considering the cultures in which they are created, not on Western standards.

Hi Loretta,
This is very interesting. I would like to read more detail about what you are thinking. After all, these are huge topics. Who are some of the writers that got you interested? What specific topics have made you stretch more to indiginous cultures? How do you book choices reflect some of the changes in thinking that you've experienced?

Use this blog to write more rather than less so that the class and I can see what you are thinking about and engage in conversation with you. You will find if you do that, you will discover more and more what you are thinking about and see possible points of focus.

Loretta/Lynette,

A subset of my MLS purpose is to understand the cultural aspect of perception: how do different cultures view designed objects, color, etc. and how can the understanding of various cultures (within a target Web audience, for example) be persuaded online?

Culture plays a very large part in art/design. I would like to understand more about the cultures that make up the larger part of our country's population (e.g., hispanic, African-American, Indian, American Indian, Asian - which is comprised of many cultures).

For example, I learned that the Navajo Indians do not place value on completed pieces of art, but rather on the process of creating it.

This is all interesting stuff to me, and it would be helpful for me to understand from a persuasion standpoint.

Loretta-

We should sit and spin some yarns for a while and use each other as resources, there are common things that we are interested in.
