Leadership: Week 10

This week's definition: Leadership is the ability to unify others under one goal or idea, and to be able to push that group towards the goal, while promoting an energetic and positive environment, while ensuring that all members feel appreciated and useful as part of the team, and working to create cohesion among group members. They should also work to ensure that each member grows and learn and is working according to their values and doesn't feel alienated by others, allowing each member to learn mindfulness and self-awareness. Leaders must also work to understand each of his followers backgrounds / cultures if possible, this wil make it much easier to effectively coordinate with them. Leaders must also work effectively and efficiently to ensure that the group remains on-task and achieves the goals it has previously set out, and should also make sure that that these overarching goals are restated to the group from time to time to make sure that no straying from them occurs.

Analysis: After watching Eric at the U Students Like Good Food meeting on Tuesday, I have a better understanding of how a leader is the caretaker for the group and that he must make sure that they don't forget the goals that they are reaching for and that they stay on task and are making tangible progress. Even though he discussed many different topics at the meeting, he made sure to reiterate the issues that were important to him and also to the larger group, this makes it easier to keep on track and to also see that progress is being made.

Analysis: Based on my reading from the Cultural Detective's packet I now see that leaders must also be knowledgable and comfortable in many different situations, and also with many different types of people, being of various backgrounds and cultures. It is foolish to think that we won't ever encounter different groups of people throughout our lives and also our leadership endeavors, and so we must train and prepare ourselves to lead effectively in situations like this. By working to understand everyone we encounter we can become supremely efficient in leading multitudes of different groups.

Analysis: My definition has changed because of Boyatzis reading on intentional change. As a leader, we have to make sure that we are working and leading according to our values and are aware of ourselves and others. When we learn to be mindful of others, we can achieve a new level of connectedness, which makes the group more enjoyable and effective. No group member should feel alienated or left out, this only creates dysfunction within the group.

Last week's definition: Leadership is the ability to unify others under one goal or idea, and to be able to push that group towards the goal, while promoting an energetic and positive environment, while ensuring that all members feel appreciated and useful as part of the team, while also facilitating collaboration from all group members and directing everyone towards the objective.

Analysis: My change in comes from the reading for this week, Factors affecting communication, Starring acts in the circus. This showed me that a leader also has to be able to understand each of their followers, and this allows for much more effective and successful work amongst the group. The leader should be working to also foster relationships between his followers, which will only help the groups efficiency. He needs to be able to understand how people are different, and what makes them tick. This will enable a whole new level of leadership.
