Chapter 215: Sun Shine Bad Summer

I don't think I've ever had such an adventure going to a show before as I did last night when Ian and I embarked on the hour and change trip to New Orleans to see Minneapolis' own Atmosphere. It all started off innocently enough with me nearly forgetting my ticket and a quick stop for gas but started to get funky when we got to Louisiana.

First of all, I'm not sure if you have ever done it, but driving across the lake into New Orleans is a really unnatural experience. The never ending water stretching out into the distance precariously dancing below you as you race the miles across the tip of the boot is just plain strange. After you finally get across you encounter one of the after effects of Katrina and underfunding with the concrete dunes that pass for roads. Trust me, get your shocks checked before you go or you'll just end up rhythmically bouncing along until you get into Orleans Parrish.

Anyhow, we finally get to New Orleans and feel our way over to where Ian had spotted Tipitina's and when we arrive and park we notice it's completely dark and no one is there. No F'ing Way. I double check the tickets and call the number on the sign as Ian walks down to Coyote Ugly and checks with the door man. Simultaneously we find out that this is Tipitina's Special Event's location. The actual venue (as it says on our ticket-d'oh) is in Uptown.

DSC06513.JPG

The thing about Uptown is that it is only reached from downtown by taking a street which we jokingly called something new every time and (Tchoupitoulas Street) driving through a heavy industrial area which is pretty shady. Lucky for us we got to experience that shadiness as we started driving past roads that were blocked off by cop cars and after a couple of blocks actually came to a police check point where they were conducting car searches. Fortunately, we didn't look sketchy enough to warrant a search and arrived at the venue after a quick search for food and ending up grabbing a sandwich at Wendy's. We went in and got a drink then caught about half of a set of the group just before Atmosphere.

After a short intermission, Atmosphere came on and Slug was totally on. They played with a live band with members from a number of different Minneapolis bands including Felipe of Los Nativos. Anyhow, it was a great show which included a good number of God Loves Ugly tracks, a handful of stuff from the last couple of Sad Clown EPs and an awesome rendition of God's Bathroom Floor. At the end of the set he finished up with a couple of freestyles on subjects that the crowd shouted out which was absolutely unbelievable.

DSC06528.JPG

All in all, once we got to the venue and Atmosphere came on everything was cool beans. Tipitina's was really cool and it kind of reminds me of the Quest if it had been founded by Lightnin' Hopkins instead of Prince. Anyhoo, Ian and I both picked up Sad Clown Bad Summer no. 9 on vinyl which I'm quickly wearing out on my record player. Good Times.

After much ballyhoo and testing the waters at various southern establishments I have thrown my hat in the Red Beans and Rice arena with an entry this weekend for some friends during the race and Sunday Night Football. I have to say it went over pretty well and tasted pretty good for a first shot. Here's a couple of pre-scarfing shots of the grub.

Also, because I can't resist, I have to post this picture of Sarah's wallet which she couldn't find for a while and then realized she may have left it in my fridge. Nice.

VIDEO AWESOMENESS:

Pay attention to the date at the bottom right. That's just incredible.

Waffle House Lunch with the Studio gang

Today was filled with Afternoon Adventures as we took not only our lunch break to hit up the Waffle House with Ian, Vince, Jessie and Jody, but also rocked out at the Boomtown Casino on a great 5 minute walk through to check out one of the last casinos I haven't been in. Check out the best carpet yet with starts, cowboy boots, and spurs. Excellent.

I have not forgotten you readerdom. I just had a really heavy deadline, a trip up north, a blitz build, and then another really heavy deadline. Fear not, this weekend will bring two weeks of updates.

Cheers.
Papa J

P.S. Kristen Zeiber, you rock my socks. Check the Blitz Build out. Amazing.

I don't mean to hate, but the Atlanta Airport Holiday Inn North is not the Atlanta I'd like to know...

So by now, if you haven't heard, I will tell you that I got held over in Atlanta, GA due to my flight being delayed from Minneapolis. Since Air Tran doesn't partner with any other airlines they gave me the option of flying into New Orleans or Pensacola, or wait overnight and take the morning flight back to the GPT airport. Needless to say, I decided to stay over night rather than try finding someone to drive 2.5 hours round trip to come and pick me up in Louisiana or Florida. Anyhow, adding to the problem was the fact that I didn't account for this and neglected to get my phone fully charged up resulting in it dying and me being left with only the few numbers I quickly scratched down. Long story short, Air Tran didn't transfer my bag (resulting in me being phoneless and down a couple of neccessities), I had to take a 35 dollar cab home and I was home a day late. Bollocks. Needless to say Air Tran is receiving, in the very near future a polite letter from yours truly.

So for today, I bring you another top 5 of places I would rather be stranded than Hotlanta.

Minneapolis, Minnesota: Seriously, I would have just flown out a day later if I knew this crap was going to happen.
Washington D.C.: I've never been and taking the time to drop by JFK's grave or a monument or two sounds nice.
Biloxi, Mississippi: Yeah, this seems against the rules, but I'd rather be home than stranded.
Chicago, Illinois: I've got friends there and I can always jump an eL and get to Midway or O'Hare faster than I can drive there in Atlanta on a shuttle.
Anywhere abroad: Hey at least I could wander around a city I don't know and try some new food while I'm at it.

Today I took care of the things I hadn't done yet, namely:

Chapter 206: Super Mix Sunday

Sunday was a big day full of early Mass, brunch with Molly, hanging with Nick, watching a Nascar race and cutting up a fallen tree in my folks yard. I'm pretty busy trying to pack up so I'll make this a picture essay. Enjoy!

Chapter 205: Bunches of Brunches

Brunch seems to be the meal of choice for catching up and since I had a couple to attend while I was in town I made sure to take plenty of pictures. Here are the briefs along with a pic or two.

DSC06329.JPG

1. The Minnesota-Mississippi Social Club (Minnesota Chapter):The Biloxi Gang and I got together along with our Hands On Homeslice Michelle to cook some old school breakfast which included Hashbrowns, Fruit Salad, Fruit Pancakes, Muffins and Mimosas! I had a great time catching up with everyone and even got a Mark Hamburger baseball card from Michelle that her father made up for Burger Time who is a developmental player in the Twins farm clubs.

DSC06353.JPG

2. Maria's and Psycho Suzi's with Yesh: Technically Psycho Suzi's was a mid-afternoon rather than a mid-morning outing, but both were great as we ordered corn pancakes at Maria's (always) and then a delicious Pizza and some appetizers at Suzi's. Additionally, we made a couple of great card castles from our combined credit and ID cards. We also went over to Powderhorn Park and had a great walk while watching a bunch of kids and the ducks swimming around the pond. Here's a beautiful picture that I took of Yesh while we were lying about soaking up the sun underneath a huge Oak tree on the top fringe of the park where we almost got run over by some punk kids. *shakes fist*

minneapolis.jpg

Here are 5 of the best reasons I love Minneapolis which must exclude friends and family since they would obviously be at the top of the list. I have also excluded Target because although it may seem obvious, it's convenience and quality is beyond reproach and certainly in a category all it's own. Perhaps I will make a list regarding the bullseye brigade in the near future. Anyhow, the list...

5. The Hubert H. Humphrey Terminal: I thank my lucky stars on a regular basis that the Air Tran flights come in to the smaller terminal and not the Charles Lindbergh Main Terminal. It's clean, it's well designed, and it's so quick to get in and out of. Big ups.

4. The Skyline: No matter which way I approach Minneapolis I love it. It's well balanced, has iconic features and just makes me crave more Minneapolis with every successive viewing. You remember the Joni Mitchell song Big Yellow Taxi? It may already be paved, but it has plenty of trees, and it must might be paradise.

3. Pedestrian Traffic: It's everywhere man! People on bikes and walking around the city and the lakes and it's so vibrant to see a city living and breathing like that. Also, when people have pedestrians and other things to worry about besides another truck next to them, they use their turn signals, unlike some places I know. *cough* Mississippi *cough*

2. The Minnesota Twins: I love the Twins. I love watching games on television, listening on the radio, and especially seeing them in person. I'm going to hit up a game on Monday with Sam, Michelle Hamburger (BURGER TIME!), and Molly and I can't wait to root them home. It may be past the point in the season when they have a chance to get to the playoffs, but that only means it's time to scout new talent. Bonus.

1. The Cultural Scene: Whether it's art, architecture, music, parks, or museums, there is always something going on when I'm up north and I love to indulge. It's all at the tip of your fingers instead of an hour and a half away in New Orleans, or Mobile, or in the middle of the woods. The parks and greenways are beautiful and not just the big ones. If you've never been to Powderhorn Park go there. You won't regret it.

Dear Minneapolis,

Sometimes I miss you so much it hurts. Yes, I just used an Anchorman line on you. Sweet truth.

Love,
James

I am heading up north to Minneapolis for a long weekend of visiting my folks and friends.

Things to do:

Visit CALA
Hang out with my Mom and Dad
Have a brunch with the Biloxi Krewe
Spend time with Yesh while she's in town
See the Southwest Gang
Go to a Twins Game
See my nephew for the first time!

Chapter 202: Models: Part Deux

The AFH models are done and I have to say that they look amazing. Michelle and the Nicoles rocked the crap out of these things and did it twice as fast this second round. Yeah teamwork. Here's a picture of the Parker House, the first AFH home to be completed here in Biloxi.

DSC06309.JPG

DSC06281.JPG

Just a quick note to say that Michelle returned from her trip up north with Sam and is back at it rocking out models and we're glad to have her back as our part time model maven. She is rejoining the Nicole crew to finish up the second round of AFH Model Home models that are due in the next week. That is all. Carry on.

I'm sure you'll get to know them all in one way or another through my blog if you haven't met them already.

A bunch of people came over for the opening night game with the Saints and the Bears squaring off. Three great pictures came out of this...

One: Sarah and I went grocery shopping before everyone dropped by and I saw a whole sea of Stewpot. Franks and Beans! Franks and Beans!

Chapter 197: Afternoon Adventures!

So David Perkes comes over to my desk today and says that he needs someone to go and do assessments of a couple of houses which are slated to be demolished over by the Colosseum to see if the houses or anything in them could be salvaged (i.e. doors, windows, etc.). So Ian and I head over there and are treated to one of the stranger experiences I've had on the coast.

Not only are the houses masonry and would cost a damn fortune to move, they are derelict and don't look like they've been lived in for quite some time despite the claims of our tour guides from the Colosseum staff. To put it in perspective, let's just say she tended to repeat herself a lot. I will post a couple of pictures and note her repetitiveness with each of the houses and what she had to say (we kept count after a while). Also, she came with an associate which I can only describe as the Igor to her Dr. Franken-doofus.

DSC06150.JPG
This house she said was "strange" 26 times...

This house was apparently "spooky" a record 35 times...

And finally, her partner in crime

Let me tell you something about the South. They don't have any banks we have in the north. Period. Chase? Sorry. TCF? Are you joking? Bank One? Uh, nope. Wells Fargo? The only thing with a stagecoach down here is Boomtown Casino pal. This sucks on a banking level, but on a G2KtC level, it makes for a new adventure due to the fact that Ian, one of the newest additions to the Studio has Chase Bank and the closest branch is in Slidell, Louisiana. So I found myself in his car rolling on a little afternoon adventure to deposit his paycheck and hopefully see my first Target store in months.

DSC06082.JPG

We only got about 20 minutes logged before Ian remembered he needed to get gas so we stopped off at a little Spur station with the most peculiar umbrellas which really didn't cover anything attached to the pumps. After that it was clear sailing all the way to Slidell. Let me state for the record I was pretty excited to get some food and check out the Target by the time I got there and I must say that probably got my hopes up a bit.

DSC06086.JPG

Now don't let me disturb you, but under my impression Slidell was a never-ending strip mall strewn disappointment. That's putting it lightly. We drove around for quite a while and the strip mall was pretty much all we saw of note aside from a place called Textronics which for some unknown reason required a barb-wired fence to protect its precious textile secrets. Go figure.

DSC06092.JPG

We ended up driving around town for a bit in search of the Chase for the aforementioned deposit as well as to exchange a bag of change that Ian claims he planned on living off of for a week or so. Fair enough.

DSC06098.JPG

During our search we found the bank, and also discovered a couple of things...

1) Los Tres Amigos are a bunch of liars, there are waaaaaaaay more than three of them because we have a couple on Pass Road in Biloxi and Gulfport and saw at least three on the way to and in or around Slidell. My heart is broken. If you can't trust the Amigos, who can you trust?

DSC06093.JPG

2) Slidell is a sh*thole. Sorry Slidell, I had to say it. Ian and I both were thinking it, and it had to come out. Maybe if you put on some makeup and wore a pair of heels once in a while or gave up the secret location of your Target store I could love you. But right now? It's over. Leave your key on the counter.

DSC06107.JPG

3) Driving over the lakes and rivers into New Orleans is not natural in any way, shape, or form. I think things feel strange for a reason. Seeing a train crossing it doesn't make it seem any more normal either.

*update* seriously, I want to shoot moveable type in the face sometimes. I'll redo the rest of this post which it decided to delete later...

I drove around and took these pictures during my lunch break today and thought you would enjoy seeing some of the things we are working on or have completed in Biloxi.
