The Gator House is Go for Gustav

I'm going to make one more entry tonight before heading up to Hattiesburg in the early A.M. just to let you know what it looks like. I'm seeing that the new projections have it 50 miles west of NOLA when it makes landfall. Looks like we're going to get some waves over here. How ironic. Anyhow, Rupert Lacy, director of the Harrison County Emergency Management Agency said that at Hurricane Gustav's present track, Harrison County and surrounding areas can expect 12 hours of tropical-force winds Monday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. so we're going to head out for a day or two and then head back down when it passes to help out.

2008_NT_7_z2_track.jpg

The realities of the last couple of days didn't really hit as we were packing stuff up until now. It's dark, there's a pretty constant stream of people heading out of town and as I was taking one more trip around the horn online I saw a picture of our low-lying studio in Biloxi all bundled up.

office in east biloxi.jpg

All our residents over here in Hancock have plans, I called all of them to make sure. I still feel like I should be doing more. All the same. Stay safe everyone. If you need to check updates, I may be out of the internets over the next couple of days, but I'll be updating my twitter account: www.twitter.com/upyourarch (which you can also see the current update at the top of my blog) at the very least, and try to get pictures up (www.flickr.com/photos/upyourarchitecture) as they become available. Keep your thoughts down here if you can. There's going to be people who are going to need it. There already are.

Gustav is now a Category 5 Hurricane. It's still projected to hit as a Category 3, but that may be upgraded to a 4 if it stays in warm water off the Coast. I just learned from Twitter that Red Cross is sending 3,000 relief workers to the Coast. People still haven't really kicked into gear over here and it's just like stories I heard from Katrina. People are going to stay and drink and they don't want to leave because of a pet or because of this or that. While there are a number of people that have boarded up and the traffic is increasing, it's still pretty calm around here.

With Katrina the eye came right through Waveland and the area of high water movement struck in the Northeast quadrant of the hurricane (including Pass Christian and Biloxi). People just don't seem to be looking at the map and saying "why, that's where we are if this hurricane is going to hit west of NOLA" which is a bit troubling. It's much higher here than in Biloxi, but that doesn't mean that we're not going to get flooding. It's strange to have this occurring over the Labor Day weekend as well. Where most people had relaxing weekends planned, it's not a gaggle of packing, boarding, or just hoping it doesn't hit and grabbing a drink.

We're going to head to Hattiesburg tomorrow so entries may be scant for a couple of days. I'm trying to get everything updated now and will try to update the Twitter. If Gustav does decide to head our way the cell phone networks may be tied up, but don't worry, we'll be out of harm's way.

vote08.jpg

I want to say a couple things about the VP choice by John McCain. First of all, I think that McCain's choice is gutsy. It courts the women's vote, it's picking someone with steadfast conservative values that voters will relate to (Palin is a life member of the National Rifle Association, a creationist, strongly against gay marriage, and a staunch anti-abortion advocate who even after having her fifth child diagnosed in the womb with possible down syndrome proceeded with the pregnancy. By the way, did you hear her husband is a championship snowmobiler and she's a total hottie?)

Secondly, I have to say this move is insurmountably moronic in all senses of the word. Not only is she not Hillary, she's almost an anti-Hillary on most issues. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean you're going to garner that vote. She's against a woman's right to choose, how does that play with the liberal feminists? Not so well I bet. On top of that she's a glorified Governor/Mayor of about 670,000 people... roughly the population of Milwaukee proper. She hasn't been the head over her state for a full term yet and they're bandering about rhetoric saying Obama is inexperienced? Good lord. Add that to the fact that he met Palin twice before naming her and we have a pretty awesome VP should old man McCain suffer a heart attack god forbid. The blog Hanlon's Razor got it right when they said Obama picked a Vice President, McCain picked a running mate.

Anyhow, here's a couple videos from the political arena as well that either surprised, impressed, or just made me laugh. Go R.T.

A great video with members of the American Samoa delegation. Apparently despite the fact that the GOP gives them full votes at the convention the DNC only gives them 1/4 a piece. Learn something new every day. Dear Howard Dean, We should really change that. ASAP. Thanks.

In light of the video above and with Gustav heading towards the Coast, I thought it would be good to get some information up about hurricanes in general as well as some text from articles that can give a better idea of how this phenomena changes throughout its life cycle.

Hurricanes from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricanes

Here's a great explanation and some links from Seth Borenstein, AP Science Writer

Gustav headed for current that fuels big storms
WASHINGTON - The difference between a monster and a wimp for Gulf of Mexico hurricanes often comes down to a small patch of warm deep water that's easy to miss. It's called the Loop Current, and hurricane trackers say Gustav is headed right for it, reminiscent of Katrina.

Gustav is likely to reach this current late Saturday, experts say. What happens next will be crucial, maybe deadly.

If Gustav hits the Loop Current and lingers in that hot spot, watch out. If the storm misses it or zips through the current, then Gustav probably won't be much of a name to remember.

The meandering Loop Current, located in the southeastern gulf, provides loads of hurricane fuel. It was a key stopover for nearly all the Gulf Coast killers of the past, including Katrina and Camille, said Florida International University professor Hugh Willoughby, former director of the government's hurricane research division.

Lynn "Nick" Shay, University of Miami meteorology and oceanography professor, flew over the gulf Thursday in a federal hurricane research plane to measure the Loop Current. He saw Gustav's forecast track going "right down the throat" of it.

"That's kind of the scary part here," Shay said. "You look at this and say, 'Boy I hope this thing doesn't really explode,' but it probably will."

It happened in 2005. "Katrina went over the Loop Current and intensified rapidly," said Mark DeMaria, a Colorado-based expert on hurricane strength with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Then less than a month later a weak tropical storm named Rita followed Katrina into the Loop Current. Thirty hours later it was a Category 5 monster.

Both Katrina and Rita later weakened — which often happens_ to Category 3 storms by landfall.

In the last several years, meteorologists have focused more attention on the Loop Current, which is only a couple of hundred miles long and not even 100 miles wide. The evidence linking it to the worst storms is beyond circumstantial, Shay said.

What's crucial is the depth of warm water in the current — several hundred feet — because it provides continuous high-octane fuel for a storm. Hurricanes use the heat from the water to grow stronger and in the process they churn up cooler water from below, which then slows or stops the feeding process. But in the Loop Current, the deeper water is also warm and it further feeds the storm.

The Loop Current constantly shifts, growing and shrinking and sending out smaller eddies. It's now starting to contract, but not soon enough.

On Friday, the National Hurricane Center warned: "Gustav is expected to be a large powerful hurricane as it approaches the northern gulf coast."

The one hopeful sign is that on his hurricane flight Thursday, Shay saw a pool of extra cool water north and west of the Loop Current. That could help counteract what he fears will be rapid strengthening.

The Cleanse: Reintegration Day 2

Today I could have juice for breakfast and anything vegetable so I decided to go to the Mockingbird in downtown Bay St. Louis and have a delicious Spinach salad with walnuts and a raspberry vinaigrette. Delcious!

Walmart is really busy right now and the gas stations are full as you pass them. As Gustav approaches the Coast it's a split between calm, craze, and fear among the residents. At work we're getting prepared to have an open house at our Biloxi studio put on by the Gulf Coast Chapter of the AIA and in the background the Centers are packing files away and getting ready to evacuate just in case it comes our way.

During work at the office in Biloxi today we're getting our picture taken and writing our name down as it appears on our license in case we take a direct hit we can get back in past the National Guard blockade like they had after Katrina. It takes every ounce to not hope that this will hit somewhere besides here or New Orleans, and you realize how selfish that is and then you just hope that no one is hurt by this like they were last time here or anywhere else.

Now it looks like Hanna is forming right behind Gustav but they think it will swing north. Who knows. We moved our gulf coast fantasy football league draft from Sunday to tonight because there's four of us still down here that might be a bit busy. It's a bizarre time to live in South Mississippi I'll say that much.

Franchising the Cleanse, Day 10

Franchise
Game 9 vs. Green Bay Packers, At Home

Pre-Game
Nothing of note except me having the strong desire to kick Brian Brohm's ass.

Based on my interactions with them in the opener I want to use some blitzes and switch back and forth between man and the zone in order to keep the rookie QB at bay. This works pretty well as I throw in an occaisional blitz and then sit back and bat balls away. The Pack gets the ball back right before the half and are happy to run the clock out and go into the lockers down 14-0

The second half starts off with Hicks returning to midfield and I scrape a couple more plays together before they stop me for a field goal. They toss an interception and I keep pounding them in to submission. It gets a little interesting near the end as I'm playing some prevent, but I eventually punish them with the passing attack and relentless APing to get the victory and sweep the seasonal series.

Final Score: Vikings 45, Packers 23

Stat Line
Gus Frerotte: 16/20, 149 yards, 2 TDs,
Adrian Peterson: 23 attempts for 115 yards, 2 TD/ 5 catches, 57 yards, 1TD
Jim Kleinsasser: 8 catches, 75 yards, 1 TD

===========================================================

The Cleanse:

Last day before integration and I have to say I think this was a great success. I'm really happy with my perseverance to engage in this and my ability to keep going when I wasn't so happy with it. Will power baby!

Things I Craved- Today was weird in that Gustav started to be a problem and I just kind of had a dull hunger all day.

Hunger Level- On a scale of 10 Stomachs, I give today a 5.

cleanse9.jpg

Franchising the Cleanse, Day 9

Franchise
Game 8 vs. Houston Texans, At Home

Pre-Game
Mario Williams is out.

Ahman Green is waaaaaay too good in this game for how stale he's gotten in real life. Although once you contain him their offense is pretty one sided. The game draws on, but the results are pretty much the same and poor Matt Schaub keeps trying to force it. I am pretty tired about all the bogus pass interference and facemask calls there seem to be but there's not much you can do about that. Maurice Hicks ran another one back 70 yards to set up great field position. I hope he gets some recognition from the game. I pull out the Wade fade twice in this game and connect both times while AP also has a monster day.

Final Score: Vikings 38, Titans 17

Stat Line
Gus Frerotte: 14/17, 193 yards, 3 TDs, 1 Sack
Adrian Peterson: 24 attempts for 161 yards, 2 TD
Jim Kleinsasser: 7 catches, 98 yards, 1 TD

===========================================================

The Cleanse:

Well, we're almost there. Today is the first day that I've really been hungry. It was brief, but I can tell my body wants some food. Sam made a joke that I should chew some sugar-free gum to get my jaw back in shape for when I start munching again. Ha Ha.

Things I Craved- Nothing in particular today, but I could feel my hunger a bit more. Some steamed vegetables I would have killed for as well as a Sub (I went with same to Subway)

Hunger Level- On a scale of 10 Stomachs, I give today a 4.

Next Week: Da Bears @ Soldier Field!

The Cleanse:

Only a couple of days left but today decided to be an easy one. The only thing I have to do is stare at those damn animal crackers in the break room

Things I Craved- These little hot dog roll-ups for the fondue (it's a trend, and not an unhealthy one minus the cheese), pretzels, Subway (again)

Hunger Level- On a scale of 10 Stomachs, I give today a 2.

Hamburger Pitching.JPG

UYA HEADLINE: In a trade that sent veteran reliever Eddie Guardado back to the Minnesota Twins, the Texas Rangers acquired the Appalachian League's "Closer of the Year", right-hander Mark Hamburger.

So I've probably mentioned it once or twice on UYA that my friend Michelle has a brother in the Twins farm system. Unfortunately I just found out that he's being traded away as part of the acquisition of Eddie Guardado who the Twins hope will bolster the bullpen during the pennant race. That's the bad news. The good news is that as a single-A player they asked for him by name which means it's getting out that he's hella talented. So bon voyage to Mark Hamburger and may Burger Time reign where ever he may be.

cleanse7.jpg

Franchising the Cleanse, Day 7

Franchise
Game 7 vs. Chicago Bears, Away

Pre-Game
Nothing of note except Matt Birk finally made it back into the starting lineup. On the game side, I do like that if you practice plays that the game suggests you're rewarded in game for it when you run them.

Kyle Orton is the starter in the game as he is in real life. I'm really enjoying running in this game compared to older versions. It could be that AP is much better than anyone we've had in the past too. The first half goes pretty smoothly with a lot of changes at the line to keep familiarizing myself with the different audible systems and we go to the lockers Vikings 13, Bears 10.

The second half is much of the same but it stays close all the way to the end with Forte doing a good job in as running back. The kickers really shine in this one and Longwell puts me ahead for good with seconds left.

Final Score: Vikings 26, Bears 24

Stat Line
Gus Frerotte: 21/31, 176 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 1 Sack
Adrian Peterson: 21 attempts for 121 yards, 0 TD
Jim Kleinsasser: 11 catches, 94 yards, 0 TD
Visanthe Shiancoe: 3 catches, 27 yards, 2 TD
Ryan Longwell: 4/4 FG with kicks of 37, 37, 49, and 43 to win

===========================================================

The Cleanse:

Sunday seemed pretty good but there were a lot of simple things I enjoy around as well as some offbeat things that came out of nowhere.

Things I Craved- Mushrooms, Ramen, Eggs (the last two were triggered by some Sam's Ramen Egg Drop Soup), chips from Chili's (so much grease!), french fries with honey mustard, shrimp cooked with Soy Sauce.

Hunger Level- On a scale of 10 Stomachs, today is a 3.

Chapter 439: Crew Up

doomtree3.jpg

Alright, if you haven't yet gotten a chance to check out the Doomtree crew from Minneapolis, I urge you to do so. I've been a fan of emcee P.O.S. for a while now and a fan of Doomtree for a while, but they just recently added their fantastic False Hopes series to iTunes so it's even more accessible if you're not in the MSP or don't have the internets (www.doomtree.net). Taking inspiration and their sounds from a great pool of talent and genres (including punk) they seamlessly thread various emcees from the crew throughout verses and choruses with great ease making them another in the long line of great Minneapolis hip hop. In addition to P.O.S., they have Cecil Otter, Dessa, Mike Mictlan, and Sims as emcees and then a variety of other players including Lazerbeak, Turbo Nemesis, Marshall Larada and Paper Tiger DJing and producing along with Otter, Emily Bloodmobile, and P.O.S. aiding in the booth. Anyhow, in addition to their most recent self-titled release they put out an album called False Hopes as a crew which was accompanied by a series of individual emcee albums of the same name by Otter, Dessa (who also has a great singing voice), Mictlan, and Sims released around the same time as P.O.S.'s Rhymesayers release Audition. Anyhow, I got a chance to get the other False Hopes emcee albums from iTunes (since there is a lack of outlets for Minneapolis music in Mississippi) and I can't say enough about them. As far as the new album, the first single Drumsticks (video below) is a great example of the chemistry the emcee's have and shows off the city fabulously. Anyhow, give 'em a peep and if you're in town keep your eye out for individual shows, the various emcees are usually playing solo every couple of weeks, especially at Triple Rock, a favorite venue.

Here's the lyrics to drumsticks so you can follow along/get to know who's who in the crew/fall in love with Doomtree. Cheers.

Drumsticks

Cecil: We work the mics and rehearse the lines that life furthers / and curse the vines that you might have heard your rumors from / like it’s me verse a vice or vice versa / then I returned to the life that christ nurtured / come come now / You’re feet first in ice water / we’re feet first in fire / we reversed the modern and earned the checks / from the check one-two’s / the three-four-fives / and the right to watch the sun on the eastern seaboard rise.

Mictlan: Pack up the bags, eat / sleep for a second / then it’s back in the van / listen to beats for the record / Feel like
it’s all that I ever knew / convenient procedure / all for the revenue / leave at my leisure / So coming soon to a college town near you / DTR here we are / holla atcha rap group / Incorporated so of course it’s hated / Write it, record it, order it, re-order it the more we make it.

Dessa: This is not a promise it’s a threat / the cigarette to your balloon / cue the gossip roll the tape I rock the room / say it’s a nose job / as in she got it cause she knows somebody / I’m paying dues in red blood and borrowed money / Son me if you can / lemme see your grand plan / a low-budget production bandada glamour on a handcam / Here let me sign your poster strike a poser / sleeping in my armour while you’re sleeping on your holster.

P.O.S: It goes get money waste / rather take money from a thing we need to a thing we see / Jake honey nothing’s free True indeed / open the seam / scribble the bleed / agitate seed to leaves / conceive Doomtree / Blood brothers / close shutters / they don’t need to see this beast / Prose sputters free / those other Joes peddle cheap / and shody work’ll bruise your body purple / Some folk’ll never lose a toe, but then again some folk’ll.

Sims: You say that hell is human / I say you break it you buy it and make the shell-toes move in on self-improvement
quicker than you could sell the movement / Make the circuits mash across this circus act / two-thousand-something moving circa that / turn of the screwdriver / ghostwriter for hire / tie up the wires / I am the fire supplier of inspired rap / burn the empire back / it’s Doomtree live through the wiretap.

Franchising the Cleanse, Day 6

Franchise
Game 6 vs. Detroit Lions, At Home

Pre-Game
Matt Birk is still out even though it said he was going to be back for Week 5. He’s “probable for today’s game. Lame. On a cool note, this is the second of my rivalry games which is new this year and operates similar to how the NCAA rivalries have worked in the past increasing the rumble and what not with the crowd being more of a factor.

First Quarter
I guess that the Lions are going to use a bit of Tatum Bell here as they trade back and forth between the run and the pass until they get down in FG range and I make a stop.
Lions 3, Vikings 0

I’m going with the short dump passes and run against these chumps despite the fact that Madden says they have a good run defense and it pays off as I get it down in the red zone and punch it with a little dump to ‘Sass.
Vikings 7, Lions 3

Second Quarter
After kicking off, the D manages to force a fumble and the offense goes back to work to put together another strong drive down to the 38. I can’t get any further so I decide to try and get the first on 4th and 3 and get stopped. Weak.

Turns out that the Lions couldn’t get anything going either so they kick back to us and another drive fails in the red zone with a fumble by Frerotte. Anyhow, as the quarter is wrapping up the PS2 decides to punish me with two facemask calls on one drive. Lame. One missed tackle on a zone blitz later and at the half it is…
Lions 10, Vikings 7

HALFTIME

Third Quarter
The Vikings come out the tunnel fired up and Maurice Hicks takes one 92 yards back for a touchdown. Mo. Ment. Um.
Vikings 14, Lions 10

Detroit goes three and out after two tackles for losses and a sack. I ram and jam down the field and then hit a play action bomb to Bobby Wade that we’re gonna call the Wade Fade.
Vikings 21, Lions 10

Fourth Quarter
With the game slipping away Detroit switches to a number for four wide-receiver sets but can only make it a couple of completions before throwing one into the arms of a QB spy. I decided to try the same plan as last drive grinding a couple out then chuck it downfield to Wade. Frerotte hits him in step and he rumbles for another TD.
Vikings 28, Lions 10

Madden gives a lecture about the QB putting the last interception out of his head but I continue to blitz and leave a couple of spies in the middle and Kitna forces a pass into double coverage which gets intercepted and run back to their 30. Chester Taylor and Thomas Tapeh have this one taken care of as I eat more clock and Taylor drives it in from 7 out.
Vikings 35, Lions 10

I kick off and keep up the heat with Jared Allen knocking Kitna out. The backup, lets call him “Nancy tries to go big and follows Kitna’s example by throwing another pick to Griffith. I drive it down and kick a field goal to run out the final seconds ending the game.
Vikings 38, Lions 10

Stat Line
Gus Frerotte: 13/26, 213 yards, 3 TD
Adrian Peterson: 19 attempts for 148 yards
Jim Kleinsasser: 6 catches, 56 yards, 1 TD
Bobby Wade: 4 catches, 114 yards, 2 TD

===========================================================

The Cleanse:

Things are going really well and I'm over the hump. After yesterday's temptation, today is nothing. I feel really great although I got the hiccups twice today and both times they lasted longer than 30 minutes. Boo.

Things I Craved- Drumsticks (the ice cream, triggered by Sam opening the freezer around 9pm), Fondue, Beer Cheese Soup... guess this is my dairy day.

Hunger Level- On a scale of 10 Stomachs, I give today a 1.

cleanse3.jpg
Franchising the Cleanse, Day 5

Franchise
Game 5 vs. New Orleans Saints, Away

Pre-Game
Matt Birk is still out so I’m going to have to continue to be wary of running up the middle but two of the Saints starting LBs are out so we’ll see what we can get around the outside.

First Quarter
Kickoff to the Saints and I’m focusing too much on the running game so Brees picks my pass coverage apart and moves it down the field striking gold with a fade to David Patten.
Saints 7, Minnesota 0

I get great blocking on a kick return and run it back for a touchdown. Maurice Hicks is the new Devin Hester.
Minnesota 7, Saints 7

My special teams high is brought back down to earth when they also take one all the way back. Dear Ryan Longwell, Please stay back instead of charging in so it will be more like real life and I’ll have a safety net for my horrible tackling.
Saints 14, Minnesota 7

We trade three and outs to end the first and all I have to say is how can their LB corps be that deep? I’ve got the Purple Jesus on my team and I can’t get a thing going with the run.

Second Quarter
I finally manage to get something going by using some play action and other short dump passes and swings from the backfield but can’t punch it in and have to settle for a field goal.
Saints 14, Minnesota 10

I again display some sloppy tackling as the Saints move down the field but am able to make a stand on 3rd and Inches and halt them to set up a 48 yard field goal and they… nail it. Seriously? I don’t even know their kickers name.
Saints 17, Minnesota 10

I stick with what was working last time and with 1:21 left on the clock proceed to move it down the field with little dumps to the outside trying to get out of bounds and using the no huddle offense which I really enjoy using. Maybe I’ll become the Colts of the NFC. Anyhoo, the Sass is once again on fire and rumbles in for a 13 yard score on a crossing pattern to tie it up.
Minnesota 17, Saints 17

New Orleans seems satisfied running out the clock and heading to halftime tied.

HALFTIME

Third Quarter
I start off the third pretty weak after getting a good run on first down proceed to go nowhere and kick back to the Saints and then we have a replay of the first drive of the game as I kill the run but can’t stop a pass to save my life. Patten scores again.
Saints 24, Minnesota 17

I respond in kind with a great return from Hicks and chip away at their defense until I get close enough and then send in the jumbo set which sets up a Thomas Tapeh rush to glory from the 5.
Minnesota 24, Saints 24

Fourth Quarter
I manage to shut down the Saints and go back to the run using a lot of Dual HB sets and have to say that Chester Taylor is pretty impressive in his own right. Anyhoo, moving down the field I have to spell the both of them so I put in the jumbo package again and run Tapeh to the outside around their 12 trying to punch one in and he… fumbles. Then they run it 80 yards to paydirt. Shit.
Saints 31, Vikings 24

So now I’m pissed off. I’m gonna march down the field and tie this up. I get through two 3rd downs and two 4th downs and then it’s all up to me and I… throw an INT to the wrong route. Smooth move exlax. And that about wraps it up after the Saints embarrass me for a final touchdown. Sam’s going to this one in real life. Hope we do better than I did.

Stat Line
Gus Frerotte: 20/27, 239 yards, 1 TD, 2 sacks
Adrian Peterson: 13 attempts for 58 yards, 1 TD/ 4 catches, 46 yards, 0 TD
Jim Kleinsasser: 11 catches, 107 yards, 1 TD

The Cleanse:

Okay, today I tested myself pretty well when I tagged along when my friends ate out... twice... at a buffet and S&B's. WILL POWER! Anyhow aside from the not so odd cravings of seeing everything I like paraded in front of me, I actually felt pretty great.

Things I Craved- Ham, Fried Chicken, Corn Nuggets, Shrimp, Key Lime Pie, Steak and Pinneaple tips from Ponderosa.

Franchising the Cleanse, Day 4

Franchise
Game 4 vs. Tennessee Titans, At Home

First Quarter
After a quality start and a drive down to the Titans 20 I get greedy and try punching it on 4th instead of kicking the field goal and turn it over.

The Titans take advantage of the turnover on downs and move the ball down the field 70-odd yards before I can finally make a stand with a couple of nice stops by Jared Allen and force a field goal.
Titans 3, Vikings 0

I respond with an completely underwhelming three and out.

Second Quarter
After a good defensive stop forcing a punt I put together a decent mix of the run and pass and move it down into Titans territory and cap it with a AP run.
Vikings 7, Titans 3

We trade another set of hapless drives that don’t really go anywhere before the half.

HALFTIME

Third Quarter
Looks like the Titans are starting off were we left off last half before they bust a huge pass that I miss a key tackle on.
Titans 10, Vikings 7

I proceed to field the kickoff with Maurice Hicks and bust a couple of tackles to run it all the way to paydirt only to have it called back to the 21 on a holding call. I work to re-establish the run and find success with AP busting off a great run breaking a tackle and juking a safety out of his shoes for a 43 yard score.
Vikings 14, Titans 10

The Titans go three and out and I go back to the run until the end of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
I continue to run utilizing the Split Back Pro formation which is becoming one of my favorite lately. Also, I have to say how much I enjoy being able to choose packages in order to spell backs or double up with Chester Taylor and AP in the backfield or any combination along with Thomas Tapeh in as well. I find the next score from this formation with a swing to Taylor.
Vikings 21, Titans 10

Dear Titans, Maybe Eddie George will come out of retirement? It’s worth a try because you can’t put your entire franchise on Vince Young. Love, James Wheeler
P.S. Antoine Winfield just intercepted your pass.

I take advantage of it by showing multiple shows with the backfield by continuing to switch packages in and out of various multi-back formations and Peterson finds paydirt for the third time today.
Vikings 28, Titans 10

The Titans continue to be unimpressive and I manage to move the ball down the field for one more field goal before it is over.
Vikings 31, Titans 10

Stat Line
Gus Frerotte: 16/25, 170 yards, 1 TD, 0 sacks
Adrian Peterson: 21 attempts for 133 yards, 3 TD/ 5 catches, 34 yards
Chester Taylor: 4 attempts for 65 yards, 1 TD

Franchising the Cleanse, Day 3

Franchise
Game Three vs. Carolina Panthers, Away

Pre-Game
Nothing much to report here except Matt Birk is out for two more weeks.

First Quarter
I win the toss and kick off to the Panthers. The special teams for the Vikings is pretty fast getting down field. The Panthers diddle around for a couple of plays and then start running DeAngelo Williams and swing one out to him on which I fail (repeatedly) to tackle him as he goes all the way to the races.
Panthers 7, Vikings 0

I decided turnabout is fair play as I unleash Maurice Hicks on the miserable Panthers special teams and he busts a kick return up to the 48. The rest is taken care of by Purple Jesus as AP rocks and rolls the rest of the way down to tie it up.
Vikings 7, Panthers 7

I pay for my arrogance by keeping up the pressure and blitzing to try and turn the tide and get another DeAngelo breakout that goes 78 yards for a touchdown. *sigh*
Panthers 14, Vikings 7

At this point I’m a little peeved that I’m getting beat by the Panthers so I let Sam goad me into going for it on 4th and 3 on my own 47 and turn it over on downs. No more listening to Sam. Anyhow, I bounce back and make a couple of good stops followed by Greenway forcing a fumble which ends up being reversed. Great quarter.

Second Quarter
It seems like the tides are turning as I’m able to stop the Panthers deep in my territory and force a FG to start off the quarter.
Panthers 17, Vikings 7

I guess I was just kidding on the tides thing as I can’t get a thing going and have to punt. It seems that my offense works best when relying heavily on the run and short passes across the middle to my tight ends. We’ll try that next time and get away from my usual pass-happy Madden plan.

I also decide to switch up the plan and go for more man-to-man coverage with some blitzing and it pays off as Jared Allen puts on the pressure and Delhomme forces one across the middle which Greenway picks off. I go back to the run-run-short pass-run plan and AP won’t be denied as he has sniffed the end zone and is hungry for more.
Panthers 17, Vikings 14

I kick in my defensive plan again and they go 3 and out. There’s a clipping penalty on the punt for me so I’m pretty deep in my own territory and I force a pass trying to make a first down and get intercepted. Luckily I think the man-to-man coverage is the key to stopping the Panthers and I kill their momentum leading to a FG.
Panthers 20, Vikings 14

There’s only a minute or so left in the quarter so I’m going to have to make this quick, but I figure I can try a couple of things before needing to go long. Turns out the first times the charm as I pitch out to AP and he goes 80-plus yards just before the gun to make it…
Vikings 21, Panthers 20

HALFTIME

Third Quarter
We trade 3 and outs to start the third quarter and then the Panthers seem to figure out my man-to-man by overloading the weak side and hitting a long fade for the touchdown. They then proceed to go for two to go up by a touchdown but fail.
Panthers 26, Vikings 21

Fourth Quarter
I decide to run, run, run, ‘til the daddy takes the T-bird away with a cocktail of AP, Thomas Tapeh, and Chester Taylor ending with an AP TD and then decide I’ll try for two as well and end up using Frerotte’s blindingly slow scramble to put it in for a bonus 2 to go up by a field goal.
Vikings 29, Panthers 26

I start stocking up on defensive backs to counteract their multiple receiver sets but leave them in when it looks like a run and send one to blitz and Delhomme gives up another duck which Sharper jumps and takes back for a TD. Boo yah.
Vikings 36, Panthers 26

The Panthers find a way to pick apart my prevent zone and man defense and move down the field but I make the stop.
Vikings 36, Panthers 29

I decide that I’d like to score again so I use the rest of the game to move it all the way down the a toss to the Sass for the final TD.
Vikings 43, Panthers 29

Stat Line
Gus Frerotte: 12-20, 216 Yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 2 Sacks
Adrian Peterson: 21 rushes for 121 Yards, 3 TDs/ 5 Receptions, 141 Yards, 1 TD

===========================================================

The Cleanse:

Today was a big improvement, I think the key is making sure I drink water before I get hungry by just making sure that there is a constant stream of water when I'm not drinking the mix.

Things I Craved- Cheerios, Subway (again), Banana bread, strawberries, peanut butter

Hunger Level- On a scale of 10 Stomachs, I give today a 2.

Day Two, Here we go...

Franchise
Game Two vs. Indianapolis Colts, at Home

Pre-Game
Coming off the last win, I come home to find that Reggie Wayne also got broken in the pre-season for the Colts and is out for the season. Tough luck for them, although the Colts are deep at WR and have Manning and Addai rolling along just fine.

First Quarter
I win the toss and decide to kick to Indy and see what they've got. Turns out, they've got Joseph Addai and they like to run him... a lot. Infact, they run him all the way down the field on a monster long drive that lasts most of the first quarter until I can pull off a good defensive stand and hold them to 3 inside the red zone.
Colts 3, Vikings 0

I get the ball back and Maurice Hicks is fast, but Indy's kick coverage team is faster. Damn. I'm beginning to re-value Jim Kleinsasser a good deal as a check down safety valve. He's got good hands and he's a solid blocker. Also, bringing Minnesota Gopher Thomas Tapeh back from Philly was a great move as he's a great blocker as well. Let's roll out Vikings.

Second Quarter
Anyhow, I drive down, but Indy's LB's are quick as hell and I have trouble finding a way to mix the pass and run well so we settle for a 44-yard FG by Longwell to tie it up.
Colts 3, Vikings 3

I have to say again how versatile Chad Greenway is and how much I like the role of Ben Leber as a run-stuffer LB. Back to the action and the D forces a fumble leading to a turnover with 1:49 seconds left. Looks like we'll see how Frerotte and Co. respond to a two minute drill against a strong D like Indy. Turns out they're pretty good as I figure Indy's D out a little more and Bernard Berrian shows that his hands and ability to catch in traffic are worth the money we paid to get him from Da Bears. Hell, even good ol' Gus gets involved showing off his old man speed and scrambling for a 12 yard first down into the red zone. From there it's a swing pass to AP in the flat and he works his magic to put it in with around 30 seconds on the clock. Lead at half time over Indy= Happiness.
Vikings 10, Colts 3

Turns out I spoke too soon as Manning and the Colts burn me deep to Harrison proving that he still has it... I guess. 74 yards later he beats the buzzer into the end zone for the TD.
Colts 10, Vikings 10

HALFTIME

Third Quarter
I get the ball back to start the second half but can't do much with it and have to punt. Indy doesn't do much with it after getting a couple of first downs so they punt back and I beef the buttons not calling for a fair catch and as a result Maurice Hicks is out of the game and the punt coverage goons for Indy run it in for a TD. *sigh*
Colts 17, Vikings 10

Alright, I know I talked about Frerotte's sweet scramble earlier, but either my line gets tired from run blocking for AP, Indy's rush is crazy fast, a combination of both, or Gus can't evade. Either way, he goes down for what I think may be the fourth time today and I have to settle for another field goal.
Colts 17, Vikings 13

Fourth Quarter
I kick off again and after having to settle for three a couple times today and getting burned before halftime I guess Childress has the troops fired up because we come out swangin' and force a fumble with three minutes left in the game. Suck on that Peyton. My mission now is to milk the clock and move it down the field. Sam mentions that I play differently against the computer. I guess that's because fake franchise dollars are at stake. With 45 seconds left, I bust a 5 yard run up the middle with Thomas Tapeh into the end zone. Too much time left for Peyton Manning says John Madded. Man, I hate Madden.
Vikings 20, Colts 17

Sure enough the Colts drive and I get called for two penalties: one pass interference (maybe true) and a 15 yard face mask (preposterous) and that lets them get into kicking reach for Vinateri who proceeds to nail a 53 yard field goal with :02 on the clock. Bullshit.
Colts 20, Vikings 20

I run it back to the 30 and then we go to...

Overtime
The Colts win the toss so I'm thinking I'm going to have a hard time on my hands but they go three and out which I follow up with another blunderous series and they get the ball back. They're driving all the way down and definitely in their FG range but don't kick and instead pass into the end zone where I pick it off. Touchback. I'm driving down the field but get stopped and it's 4th down on my own 34. Sam says that I should't be a wuss because it's a franchise. I agree, but only because they gave me one there. On 4th and 2 I go for it and complete a pass to Kleinsasser over the middle for a 9 yard gain. From that point on, I'm driving all the way down to the 30. I run it into the middle with AP once and drill a field goal to end it.

Final Score: Vikings 23, Colts 20

Alright, here's the dork lines:
Gus Frerotte: 19/27, 227 Yards, 1 TD, and sacked... 6 times. Argh
Adrian Peterson: 15 rushes for 71 Yards, 0 TD/6 receptions for 62 Yards, 1 TD

===========================================================

The Cleanse:

The only thing I felt today was fatigue near the end of the day as I could tell my body had eaten through its energy. The hunger continues not to be an issue but I think I would like to sleep a bit more tomorrow night.

Things I Craved- Bananas, a Mandarin Chicken salad from anywhere (probably Wendy's), steamed veggies (weird, I know), salty fast food burgers

Hunger Level- On a scale of 10 Stomachs, I would go with a 1/10 for the day, a 3/10 for the night. Again, feeling okay.

cleanse1.jpg

Alright, so we've made it to the end of Day One in essence. Here's the results...

The Franchise:
Alright, I'm going to kind of blow through the game summaries and do a running review/report on the Madden game as well as my Vikings franchise a la the aforementioned article "24 Hours of Madden" The first one might be a bit long and I probably won't be as meticulous with future games/reviews/reports.

Game One vs. Green Bay Packers, Away

Pre-Game
Alright, after simulating the rest of the preseason, I start off the game by looking at my roster and am surprised to see that Gus Frerotte is my starting quarterback despite being one point worse overall than Tavarius Jackson (who I will henceforth call T.Jack). Anyhow, I've agreed to not restart or alter those types of choices in any way so I forage on and find that during my simulating Matt Birk has broken his tailbone and will be out for the first 5 weeks. Good thing we picked up a center in the draft. The only other thing is Bobby Wade is questionable. I think I'll manage.

First Quarter
Started off strong with a mighty boot from Ryan Longwell and a stout defensive stop for a three and out. They punt and I start the drive out with good field position from around my 40. A couple of minutes and a well balanced drive ending with a short punch into the end zone by Adrian Peterson and it's...
Vikings 7, Packers 0

The Packers look weird and I can't figure out what's wrong. No number 4 perhaps. I'm not sure. Anyhow, it doesn't matter as the secondary breaks a couple of passes up and it's three and out again. Another solid drive by the Vikings in response capped by a righteous cut by AP for a 40+ yard sprint into the end zone for TD #2.
Vikings 14, Packers 0

Another quick turnaround by the Pack as apparently the Strip Ball drill works as on the ensuing kickoff I take it away and have the ball on the 30. The Packers D finally shows a backbone and stops me dead including a couple of sacks that drive me back to a 51-yard field goal. Despite the fact that you can now run back the field goal attempts (as in real life but it was finally added this year in the game) I decide to test Ryan Longwell's leg out and it delivers with inches to spare.
Vikings 17, Packers 0

Second Quarter

I'm beginning to think it may be necessary to up the difficulty level, but I am led to believe I am wrong as I get killed on pass D and the Packers drive down the field. About halfway through the drive I realize what I thought was wrong with the Packers. Their QB's number is 11, not Aaron Rogers' 12. Turns out that Madden decided it was still not time for the Rogers Era in Green Bay to begin and jetted rookie Brian Brohm into the starting spot. This drive is the first time I've seen that the decision wasn't a horrible one. Nonetheless, my D wakes up after a couple of sloppy tackles and stops the Pack in the red zone forcing a field goal attempt from second year kicker Mason Crosby which is successful.
Vikings 17, Packers 3

The Pack kicks off and after having the chance to return with Maurice Hicks a couple of times I have to say how good he is in the game. I don't think I've started worse than my 35 on a returnable kick and this one gets me to the 45. There's only about 45 seconds left in the half so I try to air it out, followed by a quick pitch but then decide better of messing around and just grind one into the line to bring the first half to a close
Vikings 17, Packers 3

HALFTIME

Third Quarter

Okay, we get underway with the Pack kicking off to Hicks once again and we return it all the way up to my 47. Great googly moogly! Notes from the first drive out are Shiancoe has great hands in the game, wish he'd show them off in real life as much. AP is all-day amazing as he breaks off a 20+ yard run and then grinds three runs from inside the 10 to score his third touchdown.
Vikings 24, Packers 3

I kickoff and the Packers show me what they are capable of with Brohm leading a tight drive down the field that ends with a 30-odd yard run by Ryan Grant who is a slippery runner if he gets to the outside.
Vikings 24, Packers 10

Frerotte is slow as hell people. Maybe Madden forgot to take that into account when spouting such wisdom as "the team that makes it down the field and scores more is probably going to win the football game". Anyhow, I three-and-out and the Pack gets the ball back

Fourth Quarter

I don't get the AI sometimes. The Packers obviously have a great runner in Ryan Grant and yet three straight passes and three great deflections by my improved secondary before they punt it away. Anyhow, I follow suit after not taking my own advice, but then Brian Brohm shows why he's a rookie QB and also why his Era in Green Bay hasn't started either as my secondary jumps a pass and makes the INT but I can only convert it into three.
Vikings 27, Packers 10

Brohm obviously has a bad temper and makes me pay for it as he shreds my fourth quarter zone pass defense to ram it down my throat all the way down the field for a touchdown capped by a big pass to Driver.
Vikings 27, Packers 17

It's the fourth quarter so the Pack is going to try an onside but it fails as I'm able to hop on top of it and recover. From that point it's pretty elementary grinding out the clock and using a lot of double back formations to try out Chester Taylor. He rewards me with his good hands by catching a pass and dodging a roaming Safety to put it in for one final score before the gun fires.

Final Score: Vikings 34, Packers 17

Okay that was pretty long, probably not exciting, and certainly showcasing what a huge dork I am, but to reinforce it. Here are the stat lines...

Gus Frerotte: 14/18, 145 Yds, 1 TD, 3 Sacks
Brian Brohm: 10/22, 161 Yds, 1 TD, 1 Int, 1 Sack

As for AP, he dominated all-day on 20 rushes, 130 yards, 3 TDs and 6.5 yds/carry. Sweet.

Next Game: Indianapolis
======================================

The Cleanse:
I know it's just day one, but I do feel good about the decision to do the cleanse. I am going to try and keep track of my cravings as strange as they might be and try to identify which things are positive and negative as well as how I am feeling in general and a hunger level.

Things I Craved- Subway (Sam had it for lunch) and a glass of Bush Mills about 6pm (I'm pretty sure this is leftover from the glass of 16 year I had last night as a last treat before starting the cleanse)

Hunger Level- On a scale of 10 Stomachs, I would go with a 2/10, not too bad.

There was a great write-up in the Star Tribune about IOTA (inland office for tomorrow's architecture) that my friend Lauren works at and the principal Judy is involved with the previously mentioned work with the preservation/development on the site of my former residence at 1000 University in Minneapolis. Anyhow, it's a great read and they're doing some great work. Check it out HERE or below (from Startribune.com)

Judy Grundstrom's affinity for urban, postwar buildings has helped shape her vision for her boutique Minneapolis design firm.

By TODD NELSON, Special to the Star Tribune

A knack for seeing how things will look before they are built has proved useful for Minneapolis architect Judy Grundstrom.

It has helped her design work on everything from Betty Crocker's new kitchen to futuristic skyscrapers overseas and local residential and commercial remodeling and construction projects.

As an entrepreneur, it's also helped her form a clear vision for her boutique architecture and interior design firm, IOTA --for Inland Office for Tomorrow's Architecture.

"The goal is to build it into a nationally and internationally recognized design firm," said Grundstrom, 36.

As such, IOTA concentrates on design, not the production work or project management services in which larger firms tend to specialize, said Grundstrom, a registered architect and certified interior designer.

"We're an idea company," Grundstrom said of IOTA, which launched in 2004.

"The reason why you would want to come to IOTA is [that] we've got great ideas. We have creative solutions that solve people's architectural needs or space needs."

To generate all those ideas -- and communicate them to clients -- Grundstrom has assembled a small, nimble, tech-savvy staff at what is one of perhaps a handful of female-owned architecture firms in the state. Revenue is projected to hit $360,000 this year.

The IOTA management team also is all female. Joining founder and managing principal Grundstrom are Kate Speckmann, marketing manager, and Lauren Rath, design studio manager.

'Charlie's Angels'

That's prompted Grundstrom to refer to the firm jokingly as the Charlie's Angels of Architecture. That may be a distinguishing point, but it hasn't necessarily boosted business.

"I think that it does put us at a disadvantage still," Grundstrom said. More on that later.

IOTA's design approach is modern, though with an eye toward preserving under-appreciated buildings from the recent past -- ramblers, early strip centers and other aging structures.

"We focus a lot on adaptive reuse in the urban community," Speckmann said. "We really like buildings from the city, especially the post-World War II stock that has really great structural elements and [was] designed well." Many of those buildings have fallen into disrepair, she said. They aren't yet old enough to appear to be worth saving and often end up being replaced by cookie-cutter designs.

Grundstrom disagrees strongly with the tear-down approach.

Besides her professional work in finding new uses for older buildings, she and her architect husband, Rob, won an award this year from the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission for the remodeling of the rambler where they live with their two young children.

"We have a responsibility to the time and place we're in," Grundstrom said. "We have to preserve the buildings that were there before us and we should build the buildings that are here now to reflect the time and place of our age now."

Grundstrom grew up wanting to be a painter. Her skills in math and science prompted her high school art teacher to suggest architecture.

"It was a good fit," said Grundstrom, who went to architecture school at North Dakota State University. "I always did have a strong ability to visualize things -- how they were going to look and be -- but I guess I didn't know that everybody else didn't have that."

She spent her first few years after school at a large firm in Minneapolis. She did design work for General Mills' corporate campus, which included a new Betty Crocker test kitchen.

Grundstrom left to start her own firm, fulfilling a long-held ambition. She still teams with larger firms that seek IOTA's expertise on big, complicated projects such as huge office towers or shopping centers in far-flung countries.

"The international work is fun, but it's very important to be doing work here in Minneapolis and locally as well," she said.

Diverse projects

IOTA's local clients include Jeff Herman of commercial real estate development firm Urban Anthology. Herman first enlisted IOTA for design work that involved converting a dilapidated storage building in north Minneapolis into a designer-retail showroom.

"I appreciated her ability to think outside the box, to see through issues and potential hurdles in a creative and different way than other design professionals and to do that expeditiously and stay within budget," said Herman, who since has brought IOTA in on a number of other projects.

"I really admire what Judy has done with her company -- the young, fresh, energetic staff that she has, that I think is in many ways beyond its years in their creativity and their abilities," he said. "She has a knack for finding good people, for finding good projects and for harnessing all the magic in her profession."

IOTA has been certified as a woman-owned business in the state as well as in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties and in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Grundstrom said. (Various certification programs help companies owned by women, minorities or socially and economically disadvantaged people grow by gaining access to government and corporate contracting opportunities.)

"The point of having that is that it's supposed to level the playing field," Grundstrom said. "I meet men who own businesses and they say, 'Oh, you're a woman-owned business, you must be getting tons of work.' I say, 'In the four years I've been in business, guess how many government jobs I've gotten. Zero.' ... We have much better luck in the private sector," she said.

"We don't want handouts, all we want is just to meet them," Speckmann said of prospective government clients.

The expert says: Sam Zordich, CEO of Stonegate Growth Strategies, a business consulting firm in Golden Valley, said she advised Grundstrom about refining IOTA's marketing to focus on her and her company's strengths.

"We worked on that with her pretty extensively to nail that down so that's a clear, crisp message," she said.

"Right now, her marketing and sales efforts are really strong."

Emphasizing Grundstrom's design expertise in urban, post-war buildings, IOTA now concentrates on projects in Minneapolis and St. Paul, largely forgoing the suburbs, Zordich said.

Grundstrom's experience with certification is similar to that of many other women who own businesses, said Zordich, who holds a national certification designed to open doors with large corporations.

"We think it will give us an edge but it doesn't -- not in the real world."

Chapter 430: Fire Up

So I have a bunch of stuff going on over the next couple of weeks here. The two biggest are that I'm going to be playing through my first Madden franchise season ever and will be working on a 10 day cleanse. Stay tuned for awesomeness.

sciencewithsam.jpg

Lately, I feel there hasn't been enough architecture on here so I'm going to bundle all my Science/Tech links on a new feature based on NPR's Science Friday w/Ira Flatow. So here is the first ever Science Friday with Sam! As you can see from the picture above, Sam loves him some science and will be your meta-host for my links each and every Friday.

GMVolt.jpg

This week's science spotlight will be on the conversion of gasoline powered cars into electric powered vehicles commonly known as EV's. While we wait for the Chevy Volt and other euromobiles coming in the next couple of years, we're going to take a gander at current pushes to go green. There are arguments that address what is more economical or environmental, but the idea of plugging in the car like you would your phone or any appliance is quite attractive. In addition, you don't smell like a french fry like you do with biofuel conversions.

electric_car_conversion.jpg

That said, it's also important to look at what this conversion means for your current vehicle or the vehicle you choose to convert. If you auto guzzles gas like a frat boy during homecoming week, it will do the same for electricity. EV is not the silver bullet of sustainability. It operates on the same premise as biofuels and hybrids which is to say that a smaller car with an engine that is appropriate will be able to operate more efficiently. When you are utilizing sustainable fuels this becomes a viable option for green transportation.

WhoKilledtheElectricCar.jpg

Anyhow, here are some interesting facts and links that you can use to find out more about conversion.

In the continued branding experiment, here's the latest foray, adding a flickr. I'm going to try and update it with all the major shots of the GCCDS stuff going up as well as website fun. Hope you enjoy!

While I prefer the snowy Winter Olympics there is something great about the classics and in a salute to America as they embark on their Olympic journey in Bei Jing, I bring you a great Sam find: Marvin Gaye singing the Star Spangled Banner along with clips of the Redeem Team. Go 'mericka!

Through one of Lady X's website links, I recently stumbled on Ruined Music which is a fabulous site dedicated to stories of songs that have been disgraced, disempowered, or disappropriated through an event, person, or place. There are a bunch of stories in the archives, but in response to me finding it through my friend's website I will highlight her exquisite offering. Enjoy and check out all the other stories at RuinedMusic.Com

"One and the Same (Coda)" by Rob Dougan
Story by LadyX

Each time we see heaven it slips away

There are moments in life when things change from insignificant incidentals into objects full of import and heavy sighs. For me, this song changed like that, growing shades, sprouting elusive allurements – just like the man who first played it for me.

When I met him that fall I wrote him off. I might as well have made a giant X across his forehead for all I thought of him. He was cute, yes, and earnest; but I had no interest in earnest, I had no interest in geeky, no interest in someone who tried too hard. Still, there he was: presenting himself and calling and asking and hoping and wishing. For me! And on the other side, nothing but my wounded pride and my wounded heart from a very long relationship that imploded on the steps of graduate school. Nothing left but a nauseating blur of confetti. Hardly a party.

For months I kept him like a canary. I tapped his cage so he’d sing. I danced around and laughed at his insecurity, his inexperience. I touched him and thrilled at his captivity. Mostly, I watched him sweat. He was only a rebound, after all.

But I also sat and watched him cook for me. I watched the way I fit in and did the dishes, the way I didn’t care what we were, the way we were ourselves, the way it was easy to be just that. And I watched his body in the blue light that came from his apartment window. I heard the helicopters up above us and I touched his back, thinking how to keep this moment, find a way to stay still in the blue, roaring silence.

So something changed, shifted, started to slide. After a few months he broke up with me, rightly so. I tried to stop him, confessed I’d grown to care, but he went. When his other thing didn’t work, we got back together. Unsurprisingly, he went on to hurt me as badly as I’d hurt him, treating me like an expendable piece of his life, a nothing-special accessory. After that we
existed in a delicate balance, equally hurt by the other.

Later that summer, after the turmoil had finally worked its way out, we were driving in the car and a song came on his cd player. It was Rob Dougan’s “Nothing at All.

I learn as I go / to float far away into silence / and just watch your face / and find some kind of grace in that quiet bliss / Can I stay and say nothing at all?

The sun was coming in, reflecting off the river next to us. The windows were open and I was happy. He said, “I listened to this song a lot when I first met you. I like that part ‘Can I stay and say nothing at all… just watch your face.’

It was startling to think of someone listening to a song and thinking, dreaming, hoping for me. I knew then he’d really wanted me, sincerely. Now he wanted me less, it was clear. He’d given me the Dougan cd in a batch of others and I’d never listened to it. That night I went home and listened to the song, trying to imagine him. I felt intense regret.

And though I tried later to explain that how I felt about him now was different, that the way I’d acted then was a by-product not of my views of him, but of my own sour, sorry state, he balked. The damage that we’d done to each other couldn’t be fixed.

He left me to roast in my own earnest feelings. I walked around the same places where we used to walk and listened to music. I always had a mix of my favorite music for the moment, and I’d put “One and the Same from the Rob Dougan album on one of them, rather randomly. Before, I had thought the whole cd was not my type of music, and normally I would have scoffed at any song that included the lyrics “we’re two birds / adrift on the wind.

But that day, walking on the edge of the city, thinking of him and the mistakes and the feeling of wanting that had turned my whole body into nothing but longing, I heard it and wanted it to be my choice from the album. My song to go with his song.

Well, I keep on waiting / for you to say / your wait is over / let’s keep believing we’re one and the same.

I felt the hook of the small voice saying “all right at the beginning of the song, felt the way the strings soared. I felt every cheesy word of that song, felt it everywhere at once, because that is how things change, without foresight, without preparation.

Now, if that song comes on shuffle, I may switch it off or I may listen, but I am always filled with regret and anger at myself, sometimes at him. I’ll never feel as strongly for him as I did that day, I’ll never want him that much again; now, I see how wronged he was, how wronged I was, how wrong we both were so much of the time. Things change and they become irrevocable.

Alex may have been too young back in the 80's but in '08? The perfect time for a Keaton White House.

As I was going through all my webcomics this weekend I noticed one of my brother's classmates from school Pranas (who runs "Ink Dick") has had some trouble keeping the comics coming out at a regular pace. Not sure if he's finally got his scanner issues figured out but hopefully he can get to the top of the hill and get back going again. Anyhow, I thought I'd feature a couple of his comics and send you his way to check out his awesome stuff at : http://ghostcarpress.com/inkdick/.

Hail Readerdom!

I posted a lot of new stuff and overhauled the links on the site today. If anyone out there reading would like to be linked through my site, let me know. I'm still in the process of trying to get the Cafe Press stuff figured out but thanks to everyone that has been ordering. People seem to be really happy with the stuff and I am going to be posting pictures as they come in so when you get your swag, send pictures of yourself or others enjoying it!

On the Cafe Press tip, apparently the "I can has Pocky" violates their rules. Guess even web fads get to grow up and be jerks about their jokes. Anyhow, I'm going to retool a new Ian shirt and after checking out the Minnesota-Mississippi Social Club shirts I've found that the states kind of fade into the white so I'm working on a way to make them pop a bit more.

Additionally, I'd like to open up a little art contest to all the architects and/or artists out there to illustrate architect LeCorbusier in any manner you'd like for a future project. Winner gets their choice of shirt from the UYA Cafe Press Store.

And now, pictures:

Finally, this last friday was the first ever Ugly Tie Day in the Bay as imagined by yours truly. It rained like a sumbitch all day long, but that didn't stop us from enjoying it. We even had a regatta in the parking lot featuring the Earth vs. the Sandal. Everyone in the office seemed to get such a kick out of it that the Chamber head wants to make it an office-wide event. So from now on, the first Friday of every month is Ugly Tie Day in the Bay!

"My new friend walks with his hands in his pockets. And tries to explain himself. Tells me there's a place in the Mississippi that you can see straight down at fish. Tells me inside the buildings there are trusses that could hold up three buildings and how you can, if you're careful, walk along them and pretend you're walking in the sky. A person gives a person a fact like a little present. I open it carefully, hope for long fingers. Precision. A higher IQ."

I got rid of my MySpace account today. Sorry to those few that disdain the Facebook or e.mail but I just had no use for it and it felt great to get rid of it. These are my favorite pieces of my former account.

Poetry Corner for August 2nd, 2008:

i arrived there
late
but you weren't in, yet
i circled
empty laps of encouragement
it seemed like
hours
days
they said
you didn't feel a thing
i am still
circling

A bit of Atmosphere in the mainstream over the past couple of days. Above, performing "You" on Letterman, and below on 89.3 The Current. Both great. Check out POS singing backup on Letterman.
