1.) Bourdieu's statement "the struggle in the field of cultural production over the legitimate mode of cultural production" meant the struggle between the field of cultural production with the legitimate mode of cultural production. Bourdieu considered there to be two different types of cultural producers. Bourdieu considered there to be two types of cultural producers as the bourgeoisie vs. artists. The bourgeoisie were the economic/political artists and the "real artists" were considered the autonomous artist. The bourgeoisie art dominated economically and politically over the autonomous artist. The autonomous principle considered art only for art's sake. These advocates are least to endow with specific capital. Autonomous artists identify themselves with a degree of independence from the economy unlike the bourgeoisie. Autonomous artists and their relation to struggle in the state of the power depended on the extent to which these artists would manage to impose their own norms and sanctions on the whole set of producers, even the bourgeois artists. Artists see bourgeois writers and artists as enemy agents. The bourgeois' art is the type of art more concerned with economic production than cultural production, these individual's would control what is considered good art. For example, theatre or "the popular novel". The autonomous artists would serve their own interests and create art that is based on their own opinion of what they think is good art.
2.) Bourdieu's idea on cultural production and power relates to Marx's notion of "ruling class ruling ideas" because Marx's notion believed that the class that held the most economic and political power had control of the ideas in society. Marx believed that in two "hostile camps". Those two camps were the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The bourgeoisie were considered the top of the hierarchy or the capitalist and the proletariat was the revolutionary class. Both Bourdieu's and Marx's saw their dominated classes as the most responsive to external demands and the least resistant. Proletariats were least resistant to the external demands of capitalism. Proletariats saw the symptoms but did not understand the fundamentals; similar to Bourdieu's autonomous artists. These classes were considered more responsive because the struggle of power depended on their ways of imposing against norms and sanctions even including the capitalists or the bourgeois. Both the proletariats and the autonomous artists would need to defend their positions from the dominant power. The bourgeois having more power and controls over what was considered good art in society is similar to Marx notion that the bourgeoisie or capitalists held the economic power which gave them the control of all the ideas.
3.) Bourdieu's stated that "Cultural producers, who occupy the economically dominated and symbolically dominant position within the field of cultural production, tend to feel solidarity with the occupants of the economically and culturally dominated positions within the field of class relations". This statement meant that the economically and symbolically dominant positions would feel solidarity with the dominated positions from the effect of homologies of position combined with profound differences. The convergences between producers are flaunted. Convergence would bring dominate cultural producers the feeling of solidarity, but distances are prudently maintained. Since dominate cultural producers are able to use their power on the dominated; they are able to mobilize the potential strength of the dominated and subvert the order prevailing in the field of power.
