New Years had a 4th of July feeling to me, I kind of expected to see fireworks and maybe smell grilling. We went to buy some groceries about a mile away at the Pick N Pay and decided to take the minibus back. It was a cool experience and it was really cheap, R5, 5 Rand which is equivalent to 75 cents. Today we have our first official recitation on the middle campus at the University, woot!
Yesterday Nate's friend Sandiswa ( so sorry if that spelling is incorrect) and her daughters gave to visit. It was interesting to hear about the area from someone who lives here and some of the places we are going. It was also interesting to hear how things have changed in the past 5 years.
Sandiswa and Nate had some great stories about working in townships. The leadership of some of the organizations they worked with have changed which have had an effect on populations in the townships because they no longer work in "dangerous" areas and so the resources are not there for the people. The requirements for employment have also changed, Sandiswa was saying that you need to have a driver's license to get a job but the process to gettting one is time consuming and costly. From what I have observed the weathly have cars and so they have an advantage going into the job market.
I have created a set of my photos on my Flickr page and I will be updating it often.
