I'd be the first to say that I hate soccer, but going to the Bafana Bafana international game vs. Norway was one of the most fun and exciting sporting events I have ever attended in my life. First, and I am not really sure how, but we ended up sitting in the 3rd row of the stadium after we were told the tickets were sold out. It was intense. I would never have expected to go to the stadium where the World Cup was held in 2010.
Before leaving to the game we all painted flags on our face, except for myself, I just painted two big green triangles on my cheeks. I think I thought it looked cooler than most people did. It took a while to walk to the stadium but there were thousands of people walking together with us all dressed in the green and yellow Bafana Bafana colors.
Like most people do when entering a stadium I went to the concession stand to get some beer and food. At the end of the event I ended up drinking 2 beers, eating a foot long hotdog and a chicken sandwich all for around 12 USD. Compared to the states that is amazing!
Throughout the game I never really understood what was going on. I have never played soccer but the excitement of the entire stadium was great. People were constantly blowing their horns which echoed through the entire stadium. Our section ended up starting the wave which went around the stadium 4 or 5 times. The longest wave I have ever seen and it was awesome!
It was surreal being in the stadium. I can understand why soccer is the most popular sport in the world.
