Symbolizing Presence and Absence
We have been exploring symbols and images that have deep personal meaning to each of you. We will continue to explore how the meaning of these symbols and images is influenced when they exist as electronic media and when they exist in a physical form.
Our next project expands the context of our focus on symbols to include an exploration of the university campus. In this process we will look at the work of artists who act in public spaces. We will reflect on their range of motivations and actions as we develop a concept for a temporary, collaborative, art work on campus.
As you traverse the campus each day, notice places that catch your attention. Maybe these spots are noticeable because they are sites of a lot of activity or because they are void of activity. They may be spaces marked by objects that are beautiful, ones that strike you as odd, or ones that highlight your awareness of objects that are missing from the physical and or social landscape of the campus.
Do the things that you begin to notice continue to capture your attention each time you encounter them?
Post 3 ideas that you have for symbolizing absence or presence on campus.
