In an effort to reduce costs for students, the College of Education and Human Development has created this catalog of open textbooks to be reviewed by faculty members. Read full press release.

Open textbooks are complete textbooks released under a Creative Commons, or similar, license.

Instructors can customize open textbooks to fit their course needs by remixing, editing, and adding their own content. Students can access free digital versions or purchase low-cost print copies of open textbooks.

U of M MOOCs

On Feb. 20, the University announced a partnership with Coursera--a leading massive open online course (MOOC) platform--to develop free, noncredit online courses. In the future, U of M students may earn credit as faculty are able to integrate offerings from Coursera into existing academic courses. For more information, read "Shattering the classroom walls."

Discovery Illuminates Everyone

How has the University of Minnesota Libraries illuminated your academic career?

Was it the sage advice of a librarian? The 24/7 access to online journals and eBooks? The guidance offered at the Smart Commons? The resources provided on a Library Course Page? Something else?

Using narrative film techniques or documentary storytelling, tell us about your discovery and how the University of Minnesota Libraries helped you. Or tell the story of another student or group of students. Each film should be three minutes or less in length.

Each member of the winning team will win an iPad. Each member of the runner-up team will win an iPod Touch.

Winners will be chosen by a panel judges from the George Lucas Foundation, National Geographic, HGTV, and the Libraries. For more information about the contest, please visit this link.

U of M Holidazzle Parade: Saturday, December 15th 2012

The 2012 U of M Holidazzle Parade will take place Dec. 15, 6:30 p.m., between 12th and 4th streets on Nicollet Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. The U community is encouraged to put on maroon and gold and cheer for parade grand marshal President Eric Kaler, as well as Goldy Gopher, the U of M Marching Band, and more than 150 student and staff volunteers who will be wearing illuminated costumes and marching in the parade. IEW is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This annual initiative aims to promote international understanding and build support for international educational exchange by encouraging the development of programs that prepare Americans to live and work in a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States.

Farmers Market on Church Street Opens Today

The University of Minnesota Farmers Market opens its eighth season today, Wednesday, July 11, 2012. The market features Twin Cities-area vendors who travel 2.5 hours or less to deliver and sell everything from berries to sweet corn to tomatoes to squash. As is the tradition, the market will be held rain or shine, every Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. through October 10th. It is located on the Church Street pedestrian mall, East Bank campus.

Reminder: Campus Shuttle Service on Summer Schedule

This is a reminder that the campus shuttle service has shifted to its summer schedule. Below are the campus shuttle run times for June 11, 2012-August 3rd, 2012:

  • Campus Connectors run every 15 minutes from 7 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. The first buses leave the St. Paul Student Center at 7 a.m. and Willey Hall at 7:05 a.m. The last buses leave St. Paul Student Center at 9:30 p.m. and Willey Hall at 9:35 p.m.
  • St. Paul Circulators run from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday - Friday every 15 minutes. The last bus leaves St. Paul Student Center at 4:45 p.m.
  • East Bank Circulators run from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday - Friday every 20 minutes. The first bus leaves Jones-Eddy Circle at 7 a.m. The last bus leaves Jones-Eddy at 6 p.m.
  • NOTE: There will be no service on Wednesday, July 4 for the 4th of July holiday.
