OneStop for Staff... and YOU!

OneStop has been a standby in your student lives for registering for classes, checking grades, paying your tuition, and other exciting academic-related hoopla. Did you know you also have access to OneStop for Staff? Although many functions are disabled or not applicable given your status as part-time student workers, some of the neat things you can do are add or modify direct deposit for your paychecks and track the history of your payroll. One particularly cool function is seeing how much you’ll be getting paid the Monday before your check is disbursed or deposited on payday Wednesdays. Go to OneStop (http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/index.html) and click the Staff button on the left-hand side. From here click the Employee Self-Service link (to go here directly, visit http://hrss.umn.edu/). Click on Pay Statement to see your payroll history and to access your paycheck information the Monday before paydays. You can also initiate or change your Direct Deposit here.

It's Yog approved!

Twin Cities Campus Student Employment Rules

Every student employee must be aware and familiar with the Twin Cities Campus Student Employment Rules. This document is only available online. The address is:

www1.umn.edu/ohr/ohrpolicy/Student/Rules/index.htm

It is every student employee’s responsibility to review these rules on her or his first day of work in Reserve & Periodicals.

Sound on Computers at Desk

music.jpg

The computers at the front desk now allow sound. This is important so that you can hear the *ding* that sounds when you check in an item. Listen for the *ding* to make sure the item properly checks in.

Students may not use sound while on the Internet. Playing audio files, looking at video with sound, etc. is not allowed. This includes websites that have a welcome screen where music automatically plays. Having this kind of sound blaring from the service desk is decidedly not good customer service.

Security Cameras & Other Fun Safety Updates

Safety and security in the Library are of ongoing priority.

Earlier this month the Libraries appointed a Libraries-Wide Security and Safety Committee to address issues surrounding a safe environment in libraries. The group will evaluate the purpose(s) of our facilities, assess data about problem incidents, review existing policy, and recommend additional steps that could be taken to improve our environments. There are several additional steps to report:

- The web-based archive of the Personal Safety Training sessions delivered earlier this year is available throughi: http://wiki.lib.umn.edu/HR/PersonalSafetyTraining

- From October through May, the number of disruptive incidents reported in Wilson Library declined nearly 60%. The Libraries continue to monitor user activities and take action to ban individuals who are engaged in repeat offenses. With new funding received for fiscal year 2007, the Libraries will continue to support two monitors in Wilson.

- Security monitors have received additional training on how to handle a variety of incidents, including the use of authenticated/log-in computers by unaffiliated patrons.

- The Libraries will be participating in a West Bank project that will install security cameras in Wilson Library. We expect eleven cameras to be installed over the summer, placed in main stairwells, at entrances on the first floor and basement, and in additional isolated areas. (Note: Cameras will not be aimed at service points where staff are working or at computer screens.). The cameras are monitored on a 24 hour basis at a central secure site managed by the Department of Central Security.

All students, please comment if you have ideas about how to make the Library a safer place or with any security issues in general that you've noticed.

paper clip snafu = forbidden

Paper clips at the front desk tend to get linked together in elaborate (and beautiful, yes, beautiful!) but irritating chains of Complete Uselessness and Inconvenience when trying to grab one quicklike. Please refrain from chaining paper clips or bending them into toys, weapons, friends, etc. See Figure A.

Posting Images to the Blog

Betty Large Dog.jpg
That's a picture of my dog, a greyhound named Betty.

To answer a comment of Brandon's: Yes!! anyone can post pictures to the blog. This blog is mainly a place to find out about work related information, but who says it can't be fun?! I think it would be great if anyone wants to post fun pics or a funny rant every so often.

Simply:
1. Email the picture to Margaret at ostr0067@umn.edu along with any text you would like posted with it.
2. I will post the picture within one or two days, as soon as I can get to it.

If possible, make sure the picture is an appropriate size & cropped well. For example, the dog picture above is width217xheight162. The newspaper clip art below is 92x81. The fruit picture is 400x202.

Just like anything written on the blog, pictures must be in good taste. If you're unsure about whether it's appropriate for the blog, it probably isn't. Feel free to run any questionable pics by Margaret or other full-time staff.

Images we will not post to the blog include:
1. pictures taken of people without their consent or knowledge that they would be posted on the Internet (including such pictures of staff or library users)
2. images protected by copy right
3. sexually graphic materials
4. images containing offensive language (swear words) or hate speech (slurs)
5. those counter to the mission of the Libraries or the University

These are also rules that should govern what is written in the blog.

Note: The reason that you can't directly post pictures is that the image file must be saved on the local computer to be uploaded to the blog. The only way to do this on "charlie" and "emilio" is to save the image file to the desktop. We do not want the desktop cluttered with these files, so it's best to email to staff and we will post for you. This system is in place because of these technical restrictions, NOT because we feel we need to review images before they are posted.

New York Times IMPORTANT Reminder

newspaper.jpg

When checking in the New York Times, please please please remember to look for:

-- New York Times Magazine
-- New York Times Book Review

These two items MUST be taken out of the paper and placed on the "problem newspaper" shelf. We don't have the NY Times Magazine for any of May, which means it was probably thrown out when ads were removed.

TIP: Sort through newspaper ads to make sure to never toss items like TV Guide, Want Ads, Classifieds, NY Times Magazine & Book Review, or other special sections that may be mixed in with ads.
