Food and Drink in the Library
The Libraries' Food and Drink Policy http://www.lib.umn.edu/site/fooddrink.phtml has not changed with the opening of the Wilson coffee shop this week. Covered beverages are permitted in most areas (unless prohibited), but food is not. Food is limited to the basement between the doors to the Periodicals Room, the doors to Bus Ref/Gov Pub, and the doors to the stairs and elevators. The Libraries policies will be reviewed after we have experience with the impact of the cafe.

This means that no food or uncovered drinks are allowed within the Periodicals room.

I follow the rule, however, the library makes it difficult for patrons to do so also by providing a coffee shop which sells both food and drink. The rules of staying within the confines of the basement will be difficult to enforce. Just my opinion...I will do my best to help though.

What's interesting is that there used to be a sign that said something like, "No food or drink beyond this point" outside the basement exit. Now that food is inside the library to sell, I suppose they had to take it down. :)
But what's the replacement? We don't have a sign as one enters the Per Room or Govpub Room or the elevator lobby. I wonder how they handle the coffee shop-food issue at Walter with the Wise Owl Cafe.

Good points. At the Wise Owl Cafe that's operated over at Walter for a while, they actually have not seen an increase in food being brought into the Library. Seems that most folks want to do their eating in the cafe. We're expecting that the same will be true in Wilson (and that is what we've seen over the first few days).
Also, Walter has no signage about food/drink policy near the entrance from their cafe area into the rest of the library.
